I use the older, flat 60mm bases for objectives, and I stick a coloured flag on each one (red, blue and green objectives) as a guide to measure from.

Yeah, I call the older flat bases "Titan" bases. The ones that came out during Epic40K. I still prefer them because the 40K scale bases make titans look like they're walking on hills.

I just use Warhammer 40,000 5th limited edition marker set (transparent green flags) for objectives.

...I mean, as a stopgap measure until I make some myself. Honestly...

I don't think it's necessary to measure to a single point.  From my perspective, if the base expands the total area a bit, it's still the same area for both armies with respect to capturing/contesting.  I've never found any objective to make a noticeable difference in game play.

Make anything you think is reasonable for objectives and just cover it in the 5-minute warm-up if you think there might be an issue.

I use the 60mm bases as well for most of mine and try to make them race specific. For me, the issue has always been, do you have something identifable on the marker for measuring purposes.

Maybe someone could start a thread about "Show me your objectives" to give the OP some ideas.

Personally, I like to measure to the edge of the base (much easier if it comes down to the wire to make an accurate assessment) and I also play that objectives that are terrain also count as the appropriate terrain. I'm with Neal on the fact that there isn't any real unbalance to the game if objectives are on 60mm bases or less (even if there's a mix of bases/objectives).

I don't think that the size of the objective marker is a critical issue, as long as it's clear to everyone before the game starts how control will be measured.

We typically have terrain features as objectives, buildings, bridges, hills, etc, so the sizes will vary from objective to objective.  We just agree before we get going how we will be measuring things.  We usually measure from the perimeter of the objective location rather than centered on a fixed point.
