Yes, I think what happened to me is that as I got older I became more about the fun and less about the "Total Annihilation" of others. ?

I figure it is me, not them, who has the "problem". I no longer enjoy that level of stress. I just want to have fun, even if you out play/think me.

You and most everyone else I know who's been abandoning playing the game in tournament-style these days... I remember a few years ago hearing someone else I knew deciding to quit the game.

The sad thing is GW says they need to focus on the 12-16 year old because we older guys do not spend and do not remain loyal, but we older guys leave because GW is too focused on the 14 year old.  :/

Seems like a self fulfilling prophecy to me.

Well... There are two ways to make a business like GW's profitable. One is to focus on keeping customers as long as possible. This works reasonably but ultimately you have to motivate them to keep spending money as long as they remain with you. That's hard, as most people won't have the willingness to spend money constantly on their products unless they really offer something in return.

The other way is to draw in new people as quickly as possible, since once they've spent their initial investment you've already made money off them. This is much easier, since you don't have to sustain the marketplace for people indefinitely.

GW takes the later path, trying to get more people in as fast as possible with 'shiny' factor. MtG for instance takes the later route. Creating new and interesting things constantly, offering real prizes for people winning their tournaments which don't suck ($10 cover-charge for a shot at a $150 card-box for instance). The basic issue that GW has is how do you get people to keep spending money once they've collected their army? You can't really 'out-date' models easily, so it seems the best way to make that money is selling the gaming books for continual income. These take too long to produce to be a viable continuous income source really, though. Especially since not every player is gonna want to play.

While most people would really hate it, if I were in GW's shoes, I'd most likely try to orchestrate some GOOD tournaments involving forces appropriate to the given war-effort, and only those involved, with real rewards for playing. Like an EoT campaign involving specifically IG, Marines, Chaos and Eldar. With a real reward for whomever wins through. Dunno how much. Charge a minor cover-charge and run it as a nation, or world, wide event. But that costs money to do, and GW is nothing if not picky about spending money. Also, this is totally off-topic

Except many very successful companies find ways to do both. They are not exclusive of each other. :;):
