That's because the marine list is underpowered unless you powergame the hell out of it. :)

I always build my Space marine armies in Battle Company increments. This u seldom take three Tactical Detachments if i have no Assault and Devastator Detachment.
If i have more they certainly come from the Reserve Companies but the Battle Company is my main tactical core.

But that doesnt mean that everyone has to take it by fluff, unless endorced by rules.

For example
Taking whirlwinds/predators/LRs worth of 4 companies in one 3k battle feels pretty much ridiculous fluffvise.

Generally SM list may be underpowered, but I havent seen many players(if any) around here to play with average lists. Its allways power over fluff.

Whirls over AP predators
Assault troops only w thawk
Dreads only with devs in thawk
Tacs are for carrying SC and park near own blitz
Hounds
Single razorback additions because it costs less any single element in whole army
Now with discounted LRs, AT predators arent that popular anymore, more durability for only few points more

Min-max list that could be called Dogs'n'Hawks

Bringing in Assault troops via Thunderhawk isn't against the fluff.

No, but in the fluff Marines do occasionally use tanks. :D

I thought the number of models in a blister/box was decided upon what is available as one fromation int the armylist?

In E40k times a blister of Predators contained 3 Predators. From background 3 vehicles form one squadron.

In E: A a blister of Preadtors contains 4 Predators. The same amount as a Predator Detachment uses.

Not that I know this as fact, but I strongly suspect that blister sizes (along with the changes in 40K stats) are heavily influenced by GW marketing strategies and pricing - thus any simililarities between blister sizes and formation sizes are purely coincidental :p

That wouldn't surprise me at all.

Not in Epic. At least for SM, IG and Orks.
Since the release of Siegemasters, Feral Orks and Eldar the blister and box sice is screwed.

I think a good base of tacticals makes for quite a solid army, 10 units for 325 points is pretty good, I've always used 3+ formations in every game as far back as I can remember.  Assault troops I almost never use simply because I'm not a fan of them. Landraiders and Predator annihilators yes, Landraiders can duke it out a bit and actually worth taking now, but nothing beats the Predators for a surgical sledgehammer of AT shots, they are mean. Predator Destructors - suck and yes people take whirlwinds instead of them.  Warhounds even at 275 are still pretty fearsome alright.

I voted for balance ... but if the "fluff" is crap, the rules may reflect that ...   But always - DWWWFY ... :D

I voted for fluff them rules. While the mechanics are the determing factor in making any game playable, without the theme you are just monkeying around with statistics and probability. Face it, if Epic were not a minatures game with fine figures, and 25 years+ of backstory this wouldn't have near the fan base GW enjoys.

In contrast and support to my previous statement, I am a fan of many abstract games noteably the GIPF series by Kris Burm. His games are designed using geometry, mathmatics and aesthetics. The games were often delayed until the correct look and feel were achieved.

Any player of Zertz would know exactly what I mean...and any GW fan/gamer also knows in their hearts that without the history of the Imperium and its foes we'ed all have a lot more free time ?:D

I try to balance between the two, with the fluff informing the Army as a whole and the rules determining the lists I build from that army.

Until I have a fluffy concept for the army i cant even begin to build a list properly; It just feels like an exercise in putting numbers together without a concept of what defines the army.  For example as my IG have gone from DKOK to a mechanised, soviet feeling force  I no longer have a place for the hordes of rough riders I built up, so they are out.

Having said that I once the army is defined with general options they ill/wont use, then the individual lists tend to be heavily based upon what works given the rules.

On another note this is the exact process im going through with my WFB Chaos army.  I cant get he fluff straight in my head so im unable to go any further with the list- theres no shape for the army yet (beyond the fact that I dont want to use the Gimp suited marauders).

Agreed - First thing i pick is a theme, then i try and powergame my way out of it.

If i can't find a way to twist a unit to my theme, I can't use it.
nice way to force creativity.
