So after taking a break from Warhammer for 2 years due to a combination of getting a decent computer and being finally fed up with GW policy (The Necron Codex being the metaphorical nail in that coffin).

But recently, after trying to teach/relearn Battlefleet Gothic to a group I play boards game with, I discovered who my favorite Games Workshop artist is (John Blanche), due to my interest in discoverying who it was who did the artwork for the BFG rulebook.

Image
One of my favorite 40k artwork

So impressed I was by his work, that I went and picked up an unpublished book of his that had color prints of all his artwork in 2nd edition. 2nd edition being 2nd edition, a certain short race was still alive in kicking, resulting in me seeing this picture.

Image

This helped me to remember, "Oh yeah, Squats used to be a thing.", and, "I wonder what their models looked like?"

So, while scrolling through the various pictures I stumbled upon one that caught my attention.

Image

I had never seen a Squat Epic army before, and I was immediately enthralled by it.

Giant drills?

Image

Oversized artillery?

Image

Massive supertanks?

Image

LAND TRAINS?!?!?

Image

Sign me up!

But then, my senses caught up to me, reminding me that Squats were killed off long before the last edition of Epic, so its not like I could ever actually use them in an army.
:(

Not only that, but I then found out that GW in my absence had ceased supporting all Specialist games!

:nooo

Fortunately though, I discovered not only was it still being supported, but also that someone had taken the time to update the ruleset for Squats, allowing them to be played again!

But how do I, someone who has never played a game of Epic in his life go about doing that? How do I know if the army I have created is even capable of beating a slightly grumpy Termagaunt, let alone an entire Tyranid army? How can I tell if I got a sweet deal on those Airships, or just got gypped $60? How can I paint the models, when I have

When attempting to ask those questions on the regular 40k forums, my threads were most often ignored, as many do not even remember Epic, and those who do most often don't care about it.

Which is why I have decided to come and join this forum, as where is a better place to ask questions about a game then a forum dedicated almost entirely to it? ;D

So first things first - creating an army list suited to what I am looking for. The first thing that drew me to creating a squat army was the fact they had Land Trains, so I would want that to be the centerpiece of the army. After that, I have no clue what else to add, or for that matter what to include on the train itself. Any suggestions as to what I should include in the list?

(I hope this is the right subforum to being putting this. :P )

I've played a single game against squats with my Tyranids (battle report here); My main worry was the Cyclops puncturing my Bio-titans before they got to do anything, so I'd recommend including one of those.

Probably going to look around a bit before getting one of those. The 2 I see on ebay are going for around 80 bucks!

Edit: Though this is coming from the guy who just spent $90 for a sketch book... :P

Welcome aboard ! You've definitely found the right place ! :-)

There's been a few great looking squat armies about on these boards over the last few years - often using dystopian wars bits for conversions. They seem to end up looking more like squats than squats ! Do a bit of searching - especially in the Tail of Epic Gamers section iirc.

Good luck.

Is $17 a good price for an unopened Overlord Armored Airship? And $30 for a Squat Colossus/Gyrocoptor too?

Welcome!

Squats are awesome! There are some good proxies made by The Exodus Wars (Khazari). Also the vehicles will not be a problem. There are a lot of nice conversions around made from minis still available. Also Onslaught games will be doing some minis in the future that will be of use.

looking forward to seeing your project progress

Welcome aboard it will be good to have another Squat player around here.

We have a list here that is getting closer to completion.

On the models front you do have two choices on the way that you wish to go. Firstly, take your time and pick up original models from ebay and shows or get creative and go for proxy models and conversions. If I didn't have a full Squat army I would probably go for the second option nowerdays.

What Ill probably do is find as many of the originals as I can, use conversions for those I can't, and then slowly replace the conversions with the real deal as opportunities pop up.

Well I'd be selective then and don't pay some of the ridiculous 'Buy it now' prices. Good deals do come along.

Definitely have a look in the TOEG section, I'm sure I saw a really cool cyclops converted from some kind of Dsytopian Wars base with, I believe, a 40k Leman Russ Battle Cannon on the front - it look seriously. The same guy also built a land train that looked much better that the original model in my opinion.

Found the thread actually:

that should give you some ideas!

Me too! There's some more lovely stuff already released, and more in the pipeline. It tends to make much of the old squat stuff look a bit old and tired in my opinion.

Heh, I believe I used to own one of those sketchbooks myself back in the day.

That is a good piece of art, really gets across the several kilo meter long scale of the ships. This is another good piece of BFG art too, though maybe a bit overly crowded:

I used to regularly play squats in second edition but only have once in Epic Armageddon, though the game was enjoyable. I therefore can't really off detailed advice on the squat list, but I can suggest searching in the battle report section of the forum to see what other squat players have taken?

As to how to you play, a relevant question would be whereabouts in the world are you?

I live about 2 minutes away from the last GW store in Northern Virginia, in Fairfax.

But coming from 40k, I doubt you'll bat an eyelid. ;)

I once spent $300 on it in just one day. (Of course, that day was Games Day, but still... :P )

A little bit of an off-topic question, but is it true have they really stopped doing Games Day, at least in NA?

Edit: Also, what is the usual ratio of Infantry-support-warengines?

Double Edit: Also, I found this guy on Ebay, and hes selling most of the squat infantry models.

Are these overpriced?

Welcome aboard, Ciciro.

I think the ebay items you listed are a bit overpriced, but I am out of touch with the current state of Squats on ebay. If there are specific things you're looking for, PM me. I have some Squat stuff to spare.
