"[A] question that might be worth clarifying in the list is that if a Living Ancestor is taken on a WE does his cost become part of the WE 1/3 allocation?"

This was posed to me regarding the Living Ancestor character who has the option of being placed in the super-heavies.

I have my own opinion on this but I'd like to reserve comment until I get some feedback on it.

I'd say that his cost does count towards the WE allocation.

The simple reason being that he can be used to create a single BTS when you are playing with say 2 Colossus and a change like this should be reflected in the restrictions.

Agreed, his cost would count towards BTS and suchlike, so it should count as part of the war engine

I disagree that it's automatic. If the character is a separate choice not lised under War Engines, or Allies, or whatever the 1/3rd section is called, it's not included. If it's an upgrade you're allowed to buy, it should go under the 1/3rd points.

If you want to have the character as its own selection that can go in any formation, you should include a note that it counts towards the limit if it is allocated to a War Engine.

I'd say this combined cost counts against any restricted formation costs. Restrictions based on unit type would be different in my opinion as one line item is WE and the other is CH specifically. There's a complete separation when worded on type vs formation. Splitting hairs? POSSIBLY ;)

so real scenario:
Salamander Marines taking a bike formation (under restricted formations). If I add a Captain to it, that logically follows it is part of the formation in Toto and there counts.

an opposing scenario:
say I have a list that limits the amount of dreadnoughts I can take (don't ask why :) ). Now if I want that guy to be a librarian I pay the character cost (and hopefully have painted him blue :D ). That's then logically A dread and doesn't count.

another:
I have a list that says 66% of your w/ecosts must be baneblades while the remainder can be shadow swords. If I buy two baneblades I can then buy a shadow sword. Putting a commissar into the shadows word (again, don't ask WHY :D ), that's and attached CH in the formation, not a more expensive shadowsword and I'd say RAI wouldn't be that I'd need to buy a 3rd baneblade.

I think the above general logic flows here as well.

most of the lists seem to work at the formation level for restrictions so not really a common situation to run into.
is there a specific list this question is attached to?

yeah I agree, having the living ancestor under the 'allowed upgrades' in the warrior brotherhood muddies the waters somewhat also....

Agreed as well. For a good example of a WarEngine with an upgrade that should count against the allowance, I'd point at the Necron Warbarque.

It seems there is some loose agreement then that the character should count toward the WE point allowance. While that may be muddied in some cases, it seems it should definitely count if the WE benefits directly from the presence of the character.

In the case of the WEs in the Squat list, I will make a specific notation that the Living Ancestor counts toward the WE allocation if placed in a WE.

Much obliged, all!

This was my first thought.
