hi there. this should become a full blog of the urban construction once i get past all the inititial planning that has to be done.

this is where you guys come in... :)

the plan is to use 6 inch tiles bought from here. and useing plasti- card once i find a suitable texture.

for the tiles i have three plans: found here

so which do you think looks better for layouts? the roads are 30mm on  the bases (which are 6inch squares).

when iv got the roof shapes CAD'ed up ill add some to give an idea of sizes...

I think that you should build most of them using the first layout. That will give you the standard North American block layout.

i dont understand what the pictures mean but i would make it so you have lots of straight road pieces with buildings and then intersections. No need for curves. Thne you need blocks of only buildings to add ot the city effect...

hi there, my apologies if the diagrams are unclear. im using this as motivation to improve my skills with CAD (the system im using for the drawing).

in the 1st three pannels the yellow denotes the 6 inch tiles 'ground work' the grided/tiled sections would be where the buildings would go. the black areas inside the square would be roadway.

these may make it clearer.

square with small building

L shape with building

strip with building

the roof top is the type shown here

the idea is to make all the tiles the same so they can be arranged to include the roads and buildings all as one terrain placement.

hopefully this makes more sense now.

One thing you should think about is sidewalks and how they will affect your planning. I still think that the "L" shape will be your most basic module. I would try making a grid of your modules and then see which one produces the effect you want.

With the square style, your roads will be half-widths, which means the borders of your urban area will be single lane roads. With the strip style you'll need some way to build intersections and cross roads. With the "L" shape, you will just be able to throw them all together and get a city.

Have you considered downloading Sketchup from Google? It's free.

It takes some getting used to, but it's a heck of a lot easier than all of the other 3D modelling software that I have worked with.

'Imperial' archetechure I always thought to be a cross between Imperial Soviet and 3rd world chaos. So big buildings, massive main roads wide enough for a baneblade on each side, feeder roads big enough for two leman russ side by side, then areas of slums with low or decaying buildings, cramped narrow roads, some not big enough for a rhino.

Then of course on damaged sections add rubble spilling into road and wrecks perhaps rendering them impassible.

Note neat house rule for scenarios

Leave destroyed tanks in place on roads, they may be moved by a tank with an equal or better armour save making a difficult terrain test.

After a while key areas are nicely blocked up!

I've been working on something like this for some time, only using 12" square tiles.  So far I have four tiles in various stages of completion -- a residential area, an upscale residential area, a power-plant block, and a spaceport.  My idea was to put the roadway around the edges in the single-lane square configuration, with smaller roads criss-crossing the interior.  While the tiles are all still in a state of infancy, I can post pics of what I have so far.

hi there, no updates yet.... im having problems with the larger roof dimentions.

but to answer a few questions:

@ otterman.  im useing this CAD package as its what we use at work and its the accepteed sofware type for all Civil engineering works in the UK.

@the real chris. im hopeing to get the soviet block/sci fi feel. the L shape seems to be the best for this...

@javelin.... please do :D

Okay, bear in mind that these are a work in progress of the utmost sort.  The spaceport and power plant are nearly done; the two residential blocks are still far from finished.  The one covered with keyboard buttons was inspired by the Tau University entry from a past EpiComp (I think '05).

After starting the first two tiles, I realized that streets would be a problem.  That's why the power plant and the more finished of the two residential tiles have streets along the margins.

Me too. The power plant holds the second place.

I love that in the grim darkness of the far future there are rooftop swimming pools!
