Ok folks,
the Age of Tyrants kickstarter is about to start shipping the miniatures so I decided to start making some new terrain so I could use said miniatures to play some 6mm Urban War Clau Tactics / Necromunda style games.

This thread will document the construction of my new Necromunda style industrial board, the painting of the miniatures once they arrive and hopefully the games that will be played with them.
First though I'd like to give a shout out to Darryl Hunt of the exelent blog Daxio's Uneventfull Day. I totally stole copied his idea for Necromunda buildings and then used my trusty shrink ray on them :P .
Now, what did I build so far?

Lets take a look.

Image

So , four buildings, four walkways and a platform, not to shabby.
I plan on doing two more buildings, one medium and one large, two more walkways without cover and three extra long walkways plus supports.
Here's a few pictures to give you an idea of the kind of setups I'm going to use them for, I threw in some random figures from my collection to give you a sense of the scale.

Image

Image

Another benefit of this construction method is that the smaller buildings fit inside the larger ones for easy storage.

Image

Apart from the buildings and walkways I've also begun assembling some bits and bobs to build a few more industrial/machinery looking

pieces.

More on those next time.
well ok then just a teaser picture

Image

That's it for now, as usual critiques, comments or questions are more than welcome.
Cheers,

Stroezie.

Micromunda Wasn't Built In A Day...

...but the first stage is done anyway

I thought I'd share some more pictures with you so you can see/guess at, the materials before I blackbomb the lot.

First up the initial set of buildings and walkways

Image

I also decided to spice up the buildings with some electrical wiring and some airfans.

Image

These pilons are for when one walkway just isn't long enough.
I may end up putting some more greeblies on them as they are a bit plain looking atm. then again maybe not...   we'll see.

Image

Next some of the more industrial looking bits.

A large storage tank/tower

Image

which can split into two smaller ones

Image

and as I was taking the pictures it suddenly occured to me that if you put the ring back on it could also function as a landing pad for "Get to da choppa" scenarios.

Image

a small storage tank, probably for some kind of strange bio-agent or something

Image

A water recycling plant

Image

Image

and last but not least a few more generic pieces

Image

Now, if the weather holds, I should be able to prime these during the weekend and if all goes well get some paint on them by the end of next week.

I will also begin texturing one of the place mats/boards with magnetic paint to look like a concrete floor and start looking into ways to weather the other place mat into a less shiny/ slightly rusty version of itself. (any and all tips how to go about doing this are more than welcome)

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Well I managed to finish painting the buildings and walkways,
a little lick of paint makes all the difference don't you think? 8)

Image

And of course I couldn't resist playing around with a quick setup to get an idea how things will look once to whole thing's finished.

Image

I'm afraid the lighting has washed out the colors on the buildings somewhat, they actually look a lot more splotchy and rundown in real life, maybe once I tone down the glare from the board it'll show up better in the pictures.

I'd also like to add some posters/graffiti ,does anybody knows of a good source?

That's it for now, time to get to painting the industrial machinery and I've been thinking about maybe doing some modular canals to add some more depth to the board so stay tuned. ;)

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Spectacular, love it. Lots of ideas with the magnets that I might borrow.

As for posters, put 40k banners (or Imperial fists banners, Sisters of Battle banners, etc) into google. Copy a whole bunch of images into an A4 sized paint document, save, convert into pdf, then print out the pdf but on 20 pages per sheet (or there about), meaning the original image prints out at a 20th the size without losing image quality.

I had recently been thinking of Micromunda-scale as a solution to the portability issue of 28 mm people and then I stumbled upon not just @Samsonov's but also @stroezie's work within months of the idea! And both in the same thread!

You guys have definitely both inspired me (time permitting, of course, as to whether it eventuates into something), and I'm kind of surprised that people haven't done more 6 mm Necromunda more often. I think the scale makes the vertical aspects of Necromunda boards much more achievable.

I shall continue to watch with interest! (And maybe ask questions if I ever get a chance to build something myself :P)

@ Samsonov

thanks for the tip, finally a way for me to get tiny posters that my computer dyslectic brain can grasp. ;)

@ Thinking Stone

Welcome aboard! Be warned though, building micro versions can be a rabbit hole. So far I've done: Micro Space Hulk, Micro Heroquest, Micro Lost Patrol and am working on Micro Judge Dredd and now Micromunda...

You have been warned ;D

@Stroezie I appreciate the concern! Un/fortunately, I am far too busy to spend too much time on modelling, so at least I have something stopping me from going all out :P

Now that you mention it, though, all of those games are well-suited to microvesions... (trips down rabbit/wombat hole)

Well I finished painting the industrial/machinery pieces and the concrete floor.

It's finally starting to look like something ;D

Image

Turns out the big tower is also ideal for showcasing minis. 8)

Image

Some judges escorting a convict are ambushed by gangers...

Image

Well that's it then... the board is finished... right?

Weeeelllllll....

see here's the thing...

while looking for inspiration I came across the exellent Yaktribe forums (some really awesome builds on there, check them out Link) and it turnes out in a hive you can go up, but you can also go down so...

Sump canals here I come !!!

The first nine tiles giving me the same size of board as the concrete floor (ie. 37x37 cm)

Image

Ooohh I'm going to have so much fun detailing those canals...

Image

Well thats it for now.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Ps: does anybody know where I can get my hands on some 6mm venetian gondolas >:D

Post subject:  Re: Micromunda / Urban War Clau Tactics Nano.

Spectacular stuff, full of character and functionality (in game terms and in real world terms). I would love to know how you made the green liquid thing.

The canals look great. I vaguely played around with doing similar but using MDF bases or steel bases to avoid the warping of foam board, though at a rather higher price. I guess you cannot pour resin liquid stuff on foam board?

6mm gondolas? Well, GHQ has 6mm Vietnam coastal boats which could fit Necromunda well. Old Crow perhaps, if they are still available.

As for Micro stuff... I have started Micromunda, Microhammer, Gorkamicro, Microheim, Microhulk and even Micro Warhammer Quest. Additionally, due to space considerations, I have been considering using Escorts (the Battlefleet Helios ones) as Cruisers for Battlefleet Micro, possibly to go up against the Forgeworld Tau Escorts to use as cruisers I have stashed away. Then there is my 1/6000 Great War Naval...

Post subject:  Re: Micromunda / Urban War Clau Tactics Nano.

The green liquid itself is just hotglue + bright green paint + 5 layers high gloss varnish.
The rest are just bits from my bit/junk box which I glued together till they looked like something. If there's any part in particular you want to know about just fire away.

As to the foamboard I've found that if you use several thinner boards stacked together instead of one thick piece, warping does not form an issue.

Your Micromunda board was what inspired me to try my own build so I'd love to see your other work if you have any pictures.

Post subject:  Re: Micromunda / Urban War Clau Tactics Nano.

Work on the lowest part of my hive continues, I'm hoping to finish the building part somewhere around the end of next week and then it'll be on to the painting...

Image

I've also started sculpting some fauna and flora to bring a little more life to my canals

Big rats and spiders, but nothing any experienced sump dweller can't handle

Image

And some shrooms, one can never have enough shrooms ;)

Image

I'm thinking of maybe doing some carnivorous plants and some kind of lurking sump-monster to, no idea what that's going to look like yet, suggestions are always welcome.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

I finished building my Nanomunda sump board!

I may have gone a bit overboard detailing the canals 8)

Here are a few more pictures so you can see the build before I blackbomb it.

And now it's time to start thinking about how I'm going to paint all of this.

I'd like to try and go for this look for the decking

Image

Mine won't look nearly as good but hey "aim for perfection, settle for good enough" :P

If you know of any good tutorials for this kind of thing, please feel free to share, cause at the moment I really don't have a clue how to even start.

I think I'll experiment on a few scrap pieces first and see what's realistic for my skill level.
Hopefully I'll have something more to share with you soon.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

I really like that you're doing an lower level along with everything else. I look forward to the result. And I can imagine those Age of Tyrants figures will look great based on what you've done so far.
