I've been playing a bit of BattleTech: Alpha Strike lately and decided I wanted to work on a special table for the game. After digging through my pile of BattleTech maps, I decided to try my hand a building a Sink Hole table.

While I'm building this primarily for use with BattleTech games, it will work for many of the other games that I play. It will also work for games of various scales; 6mm, 15mm, 28mm. I love versatile terrain.

My goal is to get a 4' x 6' table that can be set up in different layouts.

My first step was to sketch out the basic layout on some graph paper. This sketch will serve as my basic guide as I start cutting.

After doing some cutting I think I've decided to do two 2' x 2' sections and two 2' x 4' sections, but haven't completely settled on that decision.

After cutting up some 1" pink foam boards, I started cutting out shapes according to the sketches. This is the first section I have and I think it looks pretty good.

I will texture this with caulk and then add flock. I thought about a dessert look, but will likely make it match my existing hills so they can be used together.

You can see more pictures and info on my blog. http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/03/terrain-project-sink-holes-part-2.html

Let me know what you think or if you have any ideas or thoughts that might be helpful.

I will update as I progress on this project.

Hmmm very interesting. I think this could be a super dynamic board when its completed. Best of luck! I'll certainly be following along.

I've made some more progress on the project.

I've got 4 of the 6 sections cut. I started to texture these and got the first board done.

After I get these textured, I will start painting. I promise that after paint and texture these will start to look better.

More pictures and details can be found on my blog. http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/03/terrain-project-sink-holes-part-3.html

Looking good! If you want something that's almost indestructible, green sticky-back felt is perfect. Feels lovely to the touch, too. It is abstract rather than realistic, though:

That isn't a bad idea. I have been planning to use the same thing I did on my hills so they all match, but I might look into this as an option.

I've made some more progress.

I've completed 2 boards and have 2 more ready for flock.

My hot knife is having issues so I've got to get that figured out before I can cut the final 2 boards.

More details can be found on my blog. http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/04/terrain-project-sink-holes-part-4.html

Great project! I must admit that is an intriguing terrain type to be fighting over - I'd like to see a battle report once it's ready!

Me too.

I've now finished 4 sections and have a 4' x 4' area to play on. I still plan to do 2 more sections, but I'm taking a break on this so I can get back to work on the Tale of an Epic Gamer painting project.

I hope to play a game in the next week or two and will post an AAR when I do.
