Seriously good looking board - very impressive.

I'd agree, less is more. Don't overload it.

Looking forward to seeing more of this...

This looks great. Having spent what felt like an age putting together a board earlier in the year I'm seriously impressed by the speed you managed to get this together.

OK The Wormrider approves !
This is what I have wanted to do, interchangeable MDF boards with a box frame with a 3 dimensional landscape.
but this is tops! the level of detail make me want to loot this idea! ;D
your crumbling outer city wall is fab and your forest is by far one of the best I've ever seen! love the finished photo of the boards, the foliage and broken tree bits look like a real forest which is constantly in a cycle of decay and rebirth ! well done!

Thanks all for the comments

im pretty glad how the woods turned out - had got a couple of bags of scatter from a company called treemendus a year ago and never got round to using it.

changed over to painting minis for a bit but will be adding a few more boards over the rest of the year.

current ideas

2 x boards - trenches and shell cratered for kroeg rather than making seperate fortifications for them

2 x overgrown city boards

Hi all

been a busy few months since i posted last, work has been hectic and my TOEG hasnt been updated with any of the painting work thats been done yet.

I have recently built some basic looking boards for doing some fantasy and ancient battles in 6mm and 10mm which are ok but not up to the epic table built last year so may get hacked up some time and rebuilt in this log. currently i am clearing out some loft space and miniatures i dont use anymore and have a bit of a plan for the future

fantasy/ancients in 6mm or 10mm using hali caesar rules
the table for this will be 600mm by 1500mm and will be using cm instead of inches to give a good size battle space equivelant to 12 foot by 8 foot

28/32mm skirmish (confrontation/saga/song of blades and heroes)
this table will be built on 4 x 600mm by 500mm foam boards and will be the next project

28mm/32mm skirmish (possibly tommorows war) using warmills sector 9 corridors

15mm scifi (tommorows war - bigger battles and vehicles) 2 x 600 x 600mm colony scratchbuilt buildings

20mm ww2/moderns skirmish (force on force/rules of engagement) on 1x 600mm by 600mm foam boards again using cm instead of inches

15/10mm acw (longstreet) on 1 x 600mm x 500mm foam board using cm instead of inches

mostly down to space i need to look at the best way to "epic up" some of the other rules we like to use and how to adapt the miniatures in the collection. same with board size as i have a very basic timber framed storage system for upto 20 boards 500mm wide.

My goal will be to keep this log updated as I progress with new terrain projects in between painting up epic and other minis over the next few years, and hopefully ill keep the pictures coming for anyone interested.

Im also hoping to use this to get some good advice from the experience of others here to help get the creative ideas going.

So the next project will be a 28mm fantasy/dark age esque table top for skirmish games so i can finally dust off the wonderfull confrontation miniatures and some other nice pieces i have been lucky enough to pick up.

board structure 4 x 600mmx500mm high density foam boards 25mm thick

im going to use it for a number of settings and not too worried about it fitting historically with anything in particular as fantasy will also be played on it. current ideas are

multi level building models can be placed in - thinking of more rpg style play leaping off balconys and bar room brawls

dark atmosphere but not GW gothic style

warped woods - have been making some trees for 6mm with jewelry wire and going to try this on a bigger scale, was thinking maybe "sleepy hollow" type woods

specific terrain pieces i have in mind to include include a few pieces from grand manor like the log beacn fire (possibly a scenario objective) and the roadside shrines/crosses they make would fit for atmosphere

early stages and will kick off the build in a couple of weeks so in the meantime any ideas or suggestions for terrain, any good building models as well, was looking at the kits from manor house in italy but a little pricey for me at the minute

any advice would be welcome and hopefully this log will be an interesting read and how to as i learn myself

as the centrepiece of the table im looking for a nice building we can use the internal space during skirmishing, looking at something like one of those linked below. only buildings I have come across with quite so much detail or style, has anyone else got any recommendations along this line?

Been a few weeks and a few ideas started and scrapped. Now settled on a 4x4 board which will be used mostly for confrontation skirmishes and warmachine/hordes

first 2 x 4 section is under construction, needs sanding a bit before texturing

originally I planned to have both boards connected and hinged, this is the reason for the high sides which would have protected any high terrain like trees from damage. actually did work quite well until I realised that the board depth when closed was only slightly smaller than the loft hatch it needs to go through for storage!!!
still the boxed in sides will allow me to stack the boards when in storage so not a total disaster.

the board itself is based on 12mm mdf to hopefully avoid warping, the sides are 200mm offcuts of mdf. elevations have been cut from insulation foam leftovers from my last table, shaped and sanded with bark applied for rocks and cliffs. after seeing a lot of americans using what they called "spackle" I looked around for this instead of the usual wall filler I have used to cover joints, couple of people mentioned pollyfilla one fill which is very light and sems to be similar.......this stuff is really lightweight but drys pretty tough so should do the trick although it was more awkward to work with as it is a bit like hair mousse when applying.

the white circle is a plaster cast with frehand etching.

the board theme is going to b based around a hidden dirz laboratory which means I will be adding brass pipes, chimnes and chemical waste which should fit with warmachine as well

Heres what will be the laboratory entrance once finished, been playing around with some techniques on plasticard and quite happy with the results although the rusting looks a little to red for me

Stunning stuff! I really like the rubble / ruins you have peeking out of the landscape.

That's looking awesome. I'm especially impressed with how uneven and realistic the terrain looks.
