I've been using MIG pigments/pastel chalk on models for quite awhile and it struck me that these would work well with Epic terrain.  Because of the nature of pigments/pastel chalk, you can quickly get a good result that would take much longer to achieve using regular paint.

For this low hill I used foamcard sections covered with PVA and dusted with beach sand.  Once dry, the whole bit was given a coat of gray Krylon primer followed by a coat of Minwax Dark Walnut wood stain.  The "crater" was just an extra blob of GS that was left from another project.

After some selective highlighting in grey around the hill, I used a hobby knife to shave some dust off Nupastel sepia, grey, and rust color pastel chalks.  The chalk dust was then applied in spots with a largish brush(W&N #6 round) around the hill and on the flat spots.  All of the chalk was fixed with turpentine and then the hill was given a coat of Krylon matte.  Start to finish it  took about 45 minutes in 90+ F heat.

The great thing about pigments/pastel chalk (Yes, they are really the same thing! *ducks*) is that the fixer does all the blending for you and evens out any goofy spots.  You can be pretty sloppy and get away with it. :agree:

How does one 'fix' something with turpentine?

Good stuff Ghudra.

I use Woodland Scenics rock colour pigments for a very similar effect (plus the WS stuff is already liquid and easily diluted with water if required).

I've been wondering the same thing. The new Forge World pigments are essentially the same thing. They suggest you apply them using white spirits. I may have gotten something wrong in the translation, but I use white spirites to remove paint from miniatures. Wouldn't the spirits dissolve the paint?

"Fixing" just refers to the action of the turpentine sticking the pigment/chalk particles to the surface of whatever you brushed them onto.  It prevents anything screwy from happening to your overall color if you then use a varnish or wash over the same area.

White spirits/turpentine won't effectively dissolve acrylics and they dry quickly.  You do need to be more careful when using them around enamels, especially enamel metallics, but you don't need to worry about erasing any acrylic color.

If you are looking to experiment with pigments, I'd really recommend going with the Nupastel 1st.  They go for around $1/stick in most art stores.  The stuff from MIG is nice to have because it is already ground up, but after using both side-by-side, there really is NO difference.

That being said, the amazing & unique pigment from FW is ground from true rare earths and precious gems by gnomes living in Tony Cottrell's basement.

Well, rumor is that they don't use rare earths or precious gems at all. Word around here is that they've hit upon the mysterious Step 2. Step 3 being Profit!

Now, to find my missing drawers.

I believe for otters it involves taxidermy.
