While looking for some good terrain mats (my green one is OK but I'd like some variety), I found THIS SITE.

The mats look really interesting (not too cheap, though, but hey) but the pictures are crappy and I can't decide whether it's worth a try or no.

Has anybody purchased mats from them? Any opinions?

Thanks. :)

If you've ever looked at one of my battle reports, you'll see that I just use "drop cloths" for my battlefield covering... cheap, easy to store, and you can get an *incredible* amount of variety in colours/patterns, and you can do all kind of cool things like "split" battlefields where part is water and the other part land or snow fields or anything else you like.

I will admit, that a fully detailed and flocked table *looks* better, and that the "texture" of an actual battle mat can be nice, but now that I've gotten used to the variety and ease of drop cloths, I'd have a hard time going back for my home gaming!

I've been looking at using one from www.zuzzy.com

They say that it isn't sized for 6mm but the sample they sent me seems alright even with a fallen tree in it. It just means that the rocks are larger than pebbles but overall it seems alright. They are pretty thin rubber with a couple of spots having pinhead sized holes with particularly deep relief, but I've used the sample to open stuck lids on gouache and oil tubes and open a few jar lids with no damage so I think it can hold up to wargaming with no difficulty.

The cost for a 6x8 isn't THAT bad. Depends how much use you'll get out of it. They look fairly impressive.

I use felt cloth from the fabric store.  I had them cut to 8 x 4 foot size, then I spray painted them.  The white one became snow terrain - I just spray painted very light patches of blue from about 18 inches up.  The green and brown felt mats I sprayed with textured paint which -when used densely- looks like stone.  When you lightly dust the mats it makes them look textured with little rocks.

And the whole endeavor is dirt cheap.

Here is the sand mat... You can see more pics of the sand mats in Raiders.  I find them great because you can take hills or who-knows-what-else underneath the mat and it makes natural looking rolling hills and the felt holds the models pretty well.

I've been playing around with the Zuzzy samples: mainly cutting them to 20x40mm rectangles to flock my bases.

(I've gotten annoyed with sand/gravel because it tends to gum up the magnetic sheeting that holds bases down in my travel cases)

Zuzzy stuff looks good, and one of them they advertise as 6mm as well -- it's a lava-flow land, so pretty fractal.

Haven't pulled the trigger on a big mat, or a big mat for base-making yet: it's a bit difficult to cut out 1/4" inch circles to seat Epic miniatures (if a paper hole punch worked easily, it'd be ideal for this purpose. I'm also unsure of my ability to scissors cut it accurately for basing.

In terms of the larger mats, I am curious how well it works with 'hills' placed underneath.  It seems this may be one place where the latex sheets and felt work better than printed plastic or paper mats.

On the other hand, the other thought I have had was using Worldworks games printed paper, both as modular gameboards and matching bases.

Still trying to decide...

Of course then there's also covering the sand and gravel in Gesso-- seems to do a pretty good job of cementing it to the base.

Another interesting and tempting one is:

I've got two TerrainMat mats: a "heathland" one and a "semi-arid" one. I like them and recommend them.

The "flock" on them is rough and hard on the hands or elbows. This is a minor irritation. The things do shed quite a bit of the flock upon every use, which requires a bit of cleaning up, afterwards.

TerrainMat also sells roads, rivers and rubber sections of terrain. The roads are low quality, the rivers are ok, the sections I haven't figured out a method to work well.
