Terrain Transition... How?

I always wondered how you go about making terrain transitions? For example a nice green grass that turns into a muddy or stony patch that is natural and not man-made?

Or how about a building in ruins and rubble, where its been for centuries and the foilage has overgrown onto it?

Or the base of a grey rocky mountain mountain, how this eventually connects to the rich green rolling fields?

Anyone got any good pictures of models or real life of these?

Nice site, he "nicked" some of my ideas though !  :angry:  :;):  And I agree, look pics of Real World terrain.  Like for overgrown ruins, look at pics of Angor Wat in Cambodia or Meso-American ruins in Central and South America.  That's what I do. :D
