I picked up a 1/300 warship a while ago and I am considering getting this or something similar.

Marklin Z 89700 BLAST FURNACE BUILDING KIT 04

I basically want to build a large military port installation table.

The intention is to make 3 4x2' sections and some sort of storage system and stand to mount it on.  I also want to be able to transport it.

I have picked up some Urban Mammoth Bio-Toxin Plant stuff (http://www.urbanmammoth.com/acatalog) and Old crow shipping containers (http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/6waterside.htm) to use on it as well.  It will also include a lot of defences and air field stuff from forge world.

I am hoping to pick up some decent looking crains and stuff and have a railroad coming into the port for loading up the ships.

If anyone knows of any good looking bits that I could include let me know.

Sounds like a cool project Mark, I will watch this one progress, if you are looking for a plan of a refinery type instalation IA3 has one in it. I can scan it for you if you like.

IA3 is my favourite.  I should definititely pull that out while I am designing the table.  I am really wanting to present an important millitary asset.  If I could pull it off as an industrial port supplying military sea and space craft that would be about perfect.  I want it to come across as a bit of a transport hub, bringing supplies in and out.

This sounds like an absolutely excellent project - good luck with it!

Please keep us informed how it's going (even if just ruminations on how the planning's coming along - that's always a good part of the fun of ambitious stuff like this).

At the moment I am still trying to think about the logistics of making it in a way that will be practical next time we move house and all that sort of stuff and be able to be safely transported by trailor if I want to take it down to Perth for some games.

My thoughts at the moment is that the table will have three 2x4 sections.  I am planning on designing the legs of the table so that the three sections can be taken off and then slid into the base so the whole thing can be packed up into a nice neat protected cube, the other thing I am hoping for is that if I can fit more than three layers in the slots I can have some alternate options for the table surfaces.

I have a 1:350 model of the Tirpitz produced by Tamya.  The one pictured below is painted by someone else.  I am going to have to cut the bottom off the hull so that it can sit in the water in the port.

All the buildings and features that raise up from the terrain will be on block bases that fit down onto the table with curbs and everything on them.  So all the roads etc will all be painted on the base but most other things will be placed on for games.

I am also thinking about having some major highways and railroads coming into the port so that I can do make 3D crossings and bridges on the table.  I also want to have cranes etc for loading at the docks.

Would it be easier to have a polystyrene base and cut out a hole for the boat? And how long is that ship?

Its 73cm or around 2 1/2 feet.

I considered basing it that way originally but I want to make the table so that the water areas are built into the table.  The whole ship has to be removable so that it can be placed down anywhere on the water area of the table as sections of the dock will be designed so they can be put in different places.

I am considering making up an Ork Warship at some point.  Which will involve an extra water section to the table and infantry moving on with landing craft.

I sort of want to make up this as well:

and deck it out with imperial aircraft and have it as an optional ship to have docked in my port for games.  It should have plenty of space  for troops to actually move up on the deck and battle it out.

Sounds good - it'd be nice to see some huge multi-lane roads/railways in games of Epic, rather than just the country track type things most of us seem to use.

Maybe you could have a monorail.

Are they used for heavy cargo transport at all?  I have only ever seen light transport ones throughout cities.  I want to go for a major industry centre and theme everything to taking huge loads of millitary supplies into a port.  The image in my head is of a port on a plannet that has had very long standing combat, though the port is going to be intact as prior to the games that will be happening on it it was behind the front lines.  I guess I could have a small one between hab blocks and the working areas.

My idea being that the planetary defence force are starting to loose thus meaning SM, IG etc forces would move in and battle their.

Would have to be heavily flaked, lots of emplacements everywhere and defence laser silos.
