No Problems- will do that today. It really depends on if you want it as a major table feature and objective, or just as a small feature to one side
BTW- your RRiders went out today!

Quote (Cuban Commissar @ 19 2004 Jan.,04:03) | My domestics concern right now is taking care of a new baby...now thats is a fun project ? | The wonderful things about babies (hobby wise) is that they go to sleep so much- leaving you with free time for other endeavours!
Anyhow, I had a quick scrawl on MS Paint (thus the horrid quality) and came up with this as a first cut:
http://home.iprimus.com.au/familyog/airfield2.bmp (For some reason I couldn't post that image in here- any idea why???)
It gives you a basic 2 runway setup, with aircraft park around it, 3 AA towers and 3 ground defence bunkers. If you have extra room a circular VTOL/Shuttle pad would be a nice addition.
The aircraft parks could be as much/little as desired (or a combo to show its under construction)- a bare bones would be just the circle of asphalt/rockcrete. A fully developed one would have an earth mound on 3 sides to defend against external explosions and funnel an internal explosion away from other aircraft, and overhead protection (typically dome shaped today) which will also allow light maintenance to be conducted. One of these with the bow of a Lightning poking out would look great!
I would have at least one building as a hangar- I'm sure the IG have pre manufactured bolt together jobs!
Anyhow- thats my thoughts...interested in everyone's thoughts

If you save it as a GIF you should be fine (and it will be faster to download to).

other inspiration for an Airfield is to check the WDs with the Eye of Terror battlereports, as one of the 4/5 battles was one with troops fighting for control of a Thunderhawk Gunship on an Imperial Airfield!

Thanks Tas,
Thats exacltly what I was looking for.
Now I have a silly question.
Why too airfields have multiple runways at angles to each other. I believe it has to to with taking off into the wind and all but I was wondering if any one the true technical reason. And why not more tahn two runways.
Just wondering.
Thanks

Search for 'flightline malta' and look at the photo of the month (before January ends!) - great aerial view of the runways of Luqa. In WWII therewas only one of these, the one running left to right in the photo was built in the 70s. Remove the largest hangar and add several RAF types and sandbag and rubble and stone wall pens (and the odd Bofors) and it's similar to the WWII scene. Mainly, it gives you an idea of the proportion of the runway - you'll have to do a section, or else cover the whole battlefield (which is interesting!) or else reduce the size to 'Imperial standard runway dimensions'. ?
I'd also add the 40K equivalent of a Queen Mary - a long, low trailer used for carrying aircraft parts (esp. after a crash) - a quick internet search for RAF Queen Mary trailer should yield results. And an airfield clearance knight - an ancient knight modified for clearing debris off the runway etc. Oh - firetrucks - red Chimerae with water cannon? And an ambulance. And fuel trucks. And a Navigator psy-comms tower. And a visiting space marine thunderhawk and landing craft and rhinos, or a small garrison (1 or 2 squads) of space marines. And a Commissariat office. And a formation guide aircraft - a Marauder with lots of colours or spots all over the wings for helping squadrons take up formation in relation to it correctly, as used in WWII - ok, definitely archaic for 40K, but this IS the Imperium... And Stormtrooper airfield guards and their Chimerae. And a few sentinels. And perhaps some knights to bolster firepower and defend the runway, penned (like the aircraft) in their own private area. And an Ogryn squad filling holes in the runway and hauling wreckage out of the way. And a Blessings Platform - this would be a largish vehicle with loudspeakers and a raised platform enabling senior Ad. Mech officials (my bosses!) to bless entire squadrons of vehicles - leading an Ad.Mech procession. Ok, I'm getting carried away now...

Cuban commissar : the possibility to take in account the direction of the wind (and, optionaly, the possibility to have multiple take-of and landing at the same time when there are multiple parralel runaway) IS the main technical reason. There ARE sometimes more than 2 directions, with for exemple three runaway set in a triangle shaped form, but in most case there are only 2 main direction for the wind, so it's not necessary to make a third runaway.

Athmos is quite correct- with 2 runways (operatin in either direction) the worst crosswind an aircraft has to fight landing or taking off is 45 degrees. With 3 its even better.
The into wind thing for launch is to increase the relative wind strength which gives more lift to the wings and thus more power to assist take off. (and also less runway distance needed)
For landing, crosswinds make control difficult- if you have a single run you could have a direct crosswind whcih greatly increases the chance of a crash as thats when the aircraft is at its slowest and likely to stall.
vanvlak- LOL- you are My kind of nutcase! Add crashed landa to taste....And thanks for the link too .
