Hardboard (in the UK) is my preferred choice being thinner, lighter and cheaper than MDF. I think this could be the same as 'pressboard' in the US.
Tip - check out the local supermarket for large towers of bottled water. Often they use hardboard as a separator between layers of bottles and this is thrown away - so you can get it for free.
