I finished the first test piece. I can't say that I'm 100% happy with it. It took too long to paint and the quality and color wasn't what I was aiming for.  :sigh:

Oh well, I guess that's what "test pieces" are for.

Edited to include "more natural" colored picture.

Hey Malakai, I really think you need to paint some of my stuff.

I don't know quite what you had in mind but I would gladly have something this good on my own table. Great looking ruins mate.  :agree:

Thanks Warhead. I think my problem with it is it came out too bright, too gray, and the weathering looks sloppy.

I think my problem with it is it came out too bright, too gray, and the weathering looks sloppy.

I always try to make sure that my weathering washes are very opaque and then do multiple coats. Flow release helps as well as it makes it trickle into and along the model

I think what makes it look so bright is the lack of contrast in the colours. I find terrain really tricky to do as I often get the colours too dark or too light.

Try dappling some of the base grey overtop the larger spots of weathering and also try to drybrush some earth tones onto the rubble to make it look more like dirt and rubble. That might help to add some contrast between the base and the building. I also add a weathering wash or three and the drybrush over it (as well as some of the metal) to soften everything up.

That said, its still pretty damn good looking.

I think for a test piece it looks fine :-)
Keep at it and you'll get what you're after.  What have you used for the 'textured' layer of ground on the base?

Thanks MoK. The textured bit is a plastic terrain sheet I bought from a model train supplier called Slater's Plastikard out of England so it should be  convenient for you.

As an aside I think the building looks better in real life. It wasn't until I had stared at it on my computer then went back to my desk that I realized just how much the color had changed.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to reset the white setting on my camera. That should help keep my models from looking so "washed out."

It looks like crap. I'll gladly take it off your hands.  :vD But seriously, it looks good to me.

Nice job, looks good to me.

What did you use for the base, platicard?  If so, what thickness did you use?  I am thinking of basing my ruins on plasticard but am wondering about warping issues.  Your bases look good and non warped, whatever it is you used.

For me this test piece is just perfect. It isn't just a shade of grey, they are other colours that make the whole piece more realistic. Keep on that way ! :agree:

The plasticard is .080" or 2mm.

I believe that if you have these out-of-print models or invest in getting a (overpriced) set then it is worth it to mount them on something permanent that won't warp. And that goes doubly for the Forge World buildings!  :)

Hey,
Actually I very much like it. I think the color is good and the details are great.
Only thing is maybe to paint the sides of the base in black which is a very minor suggestion :0.
Eyal.

When I use a backdrop or no backdrop the color in the picture changes. When I put a white piece of paper behind the model it returns to it's "real" color.

This is what the building looks like in real life:

When I remove the white paper it goes back to looking too gray again. Nothing else is changed. The lighting, time of day, nothing. I don't get it.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

I've discovered Picasa by reading an article on the excellent website Tabletop Gaming News and it's a lethal weapon to have perfect pictures of your minis. here's the link to the article that explain how to work with Picasa. Hope it will help you as much as it help me.
