Hi Guys,

Have started to put together a large tile scenic gaming/display board.

The tiles are about 60cm x 60cm approx they are interlocking and 3 tiles in total,

The question is I love the look of the flock grass but hate the way it always comes off,
My other option is to use strong glue to glue small grit ballast and paint and this stuff never moves and
does not come off.

Any other suggestions or options folks have used or heard of that are available ?

On the paint approach I can vouch for using a stipling brush (you'll want to buy a cheap bug brush and cut the hairs for a table I suspect ) with various greens, ochres, tans can make for a very passable plants. Less grass like and looks more like ground cover /moors but it works well and really stands up to abuse.

Matowar, it's made from flock in a resin so it doesn't shed. Cut it and use for the surface.

Another problem with flock is that it picks up dust and this becomes impossible to remove (so far as I can tell). Hoovering would be quite fatal. The colour of flock just dulls over time because of this. Static grass, on the other hand, should survive a hoovering.

Whats the difference between flock and static grass as I have no idea ?

I am still heading in the direction of glueing ballast or sand and painting it,
I love the look of these grass things buts its just the idea of it all coming off everywhere with that
grass stuff, but I am adding water resin stuff also and also want the board sections to look really
nice also for display purposes and don't want to be constantly vacuuming or wiping up green
bits !

The ballast would be super glued as I do with my infantry bases and that stuff does not budge even more so
with paint on top of it. I may just put static grass in places like along the river banks and buildings to
cut down on the risk of coming off everywhere maybe

Woodland Scenics do some very nice vinyl mats called "Ready Grass" that are great once adhered to more rigid boards. They can even be mouled over terrain (hills) with a heat gun. A lot of the stuff they do (for railway enthusiasts) is very reasonably priced compared to almost exactly the same products packaged up for wargamers.

Those are more for static setups (e.g. a railroad board) and you'll get a lot of shedding if you're rolling them up or pushing minis around on them.

The best looking, most durable DIY boards I've seen were the SAGA boards at Adepticon:

He said he poured straight white glue onto the areas he wanted flocked, mushed it up with a brush a bit, and then covered it with static grass. After patting it down it was left for a day and then stood upright to let the looses stuff fall off.

It's not a good option for rolled up areas, true. S'why I suggested it for rigid areas. For pushing minis about, it depends how often, how heavily and what sort of bases used. Slotta ones or slightly abrasive ply bases being the worst.

I actually used flat felt, tightly pulled over and heavy-duty stapled on the back of 3/4" MDF board. Solid as a rock, no tearing so far and doubles as a nice board games table too.

I would've thought the PVA (white glue) + static grass would be rather susceptible to shedding after a few games, it's certainly been so in all the times I've used it with PVA - interesting to hear that it's apparently quite resilient. What was the material of the base mat he stuck everything down on to?
