The two things that I miss most from the 'old days' are:

- As already mentioned, I prefer a more hard science fiction view point. Not overdone technology, but I feel that daemons are too common, and I prefered the way that daemons were in Rogue Trader days.

- The randomness of it all. Rogue Trader had tables to roll on for absolutely everything. I feel that GW became obsessed with 'balanced' armies.

However, one of the things that I am glad have changed:

- More definition of armies and races. The older Eldar could take bolt guns and all technology was open to everyone.

Hi!

As with most literature nowadays I feel that it's too "politically correct." What drew me in to the background was the hopeless nature of the 40k universe. Also, it was all "shades of grey" and not as black and white as it is now. Even chaos wasn't totally evil and the Imperium was far from good. The ambiguity is what I found charming.

I dont mind the plotline advancing or maturing, but the character is definitely not there anymore IMO.

Though I have never read a GW novel, I have read a few Star Trek novels and you're right that most of them are pants...

However, in the pile of poo are a few diamonds and if you ever enjoyed the TNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise then you will really enjoy the "Q-Squared" novel.

Though I have never read a GW novel, I have read a few Star Trek novels and you're right that most of them are pants...

I was waiting for you to pipe in about the Star Trek novels. I'm glad that you haven't disappointed.

I may eventually break down and read some of the 40k novels although I still have some strong hesitation to do so. Most of the guys I know that read the novels aren't the brightest bulbs in the sockets and that gives me pause.

I do hear good things about Dan Abbet though and I did like his Titan graphic novels. I still haven't read the third release though.

I have sort of a crazy idea to scratch-build the Titans out of the second Titan graphic novel. What do you think?

Pretty cool idea. Kinda simple 'alternate-patterns' weren't they?

They all seem to be roughly based on the basic Lucius chassis, so a bit of plasticard and some different weapons and heads would be all that is needed to make a few... :D

The two Warlords were definitely more modern marks, but the chassis and weapons are significantly different. I was actually thinking about using an Ork Armoured Nob chassis for the base. The Plasma cannon wouldn't be too hard though to approximate, there are plenty of good plasma guns in 25mm 40k.

Oh yeah!  They had some great randomising tables- subplot generators weer cool, as were the terrain tables with nasty, carnivorous foliage...  

Had some great laughs with that when the thicket my scouts ran into turned around and ate them!

I would agree that the fluff in the rules and army books have got lighter - especially in WFB. I hate what they did to the Wood Elves, but this has been a deteriation which began in 4th ed.

As for the novels, I haven't read any of the 40k ones, but the Felix and Gotrek ones for Fantasy are kinda cool.

I cannot stand any of the Star Wars books except for the Timothy Zahn ones which are superb and I HIGHLY recommend them.

The Star Trek books are also awful, I haven't read Q-Squared, but the only good ones I have found are written by Shatner himself, they truely are superb ;). Nice and cheesy how Kirk beats up everyone, even defeats Worf in a Battleth duel - didn't see that one coming....  :O .

Hi!

Rogue trader had its good points, but could also be deadly cheesy. For example there was a rule that you could bring 50% of your force in off table ordinance. I made a missile called the "FU2" (yeah, you know what that means }:) ).  It was a vortex missile with a 3 foot radius for 1000 points. So in a 2000 point point game I brought one of these, obliterate the opponents side of the table in one blast and game over. I actually won a tornament (the only 40k one I ever played) this way, even though I told the organizers to limit the force the selection. They got the point later.... :L

I still prefer the fluff from those days though, warts and all.

The equipment that I miss the most is the displacer field. One shot hits and the model is transported in a random direction, usually right into the open! Great technology.
