Hello all,
I am working in the fluff for my chapter (again, since I practically discarded everything I had written for the black griffons... around 40 pages) and I plan to make them a crusading chapter; No homeworld, use to travel around, yadda yadda, you get the idea.
What I would like to know is basically how a chapter like the Crimson Fists or other crusading forces operate. The Black templars are more a rarity than the rule, I suppose, so I would like to get a feeling of a crusading fleet that is not a black templar style one. This is why I am asking about the crimson fists, since I know that they have been a crusading chapter through most of their history, but any other examples are welcomed.
Right now I have the problem that my fluff is too similar to that of the black templars, something I do not really like Any help in finding alternatives will be welcomed
health and sixes,
Xavi

Are the Crimson Fists a crusading chapter? I thought their hoeworld was simply destroyed by the Orks. I forget what it was called- it was in the Rogue Trader rulebook.
I thought the Crimson Fists were simply homeless.
Cheers

The Crimson (and Imperial) Fists are mentionned in the new SM rules for BFG to occasionally launch crusades, although not exclusively, and can be well represented by the Crusade fleet list or the Codex Astartes fleet list.
In Armada the Black Dragons are mentionned as being an experienced naval chapter like the Black Templars (not sure if they are fleet based or crusading), has anyone seen any background info about them?
And slightly OT, in the new SM rules for BFG it mentions the Crusade fleet list is ideal for representing fleet based chapters, particularly if they operate from a fortress monastery (makes sense as it's the only list that includes the fortress monastery) such as the Dark Angels and Fire Hawks. Does anyone know where I could find some background material on the Fire Hawks?

Yep. The Crimson Fists home world (Rynns World) was destroyed when their own defence missiles did a quick U-Turn!
A crusade fleet is not one that is necessarily homeless, but are fanatic about 'getting out there and spreading the word'. The trouble is that a crusading fleet can operate however it likes. It would generally be a small fleet.

So, ypi would say that one Strike cruiser and 3 escorts per company? I was trying to designate a chapter that operates in duos. 2 compa?ies act together most of the time. There are 4 groups of those (based on the 4 elements), with the first and 10th company being divided among the diverse forces.
I was trying to decide on what fleet would be able to self-sustain itself. A SC per company seems... small somehow so I thought that I should better ask
Xavi
PS: the crimson fists have been a crusadong homeless chapter for most of their history. Only in M37 or 38, IIRC they got the rynn's world fief.

The remnants then eventually fought off the Orks and in the current timeline are supposed to be rebuilding the Chapter, iirc.

On a related note, is there a list of crusading chapters available? ?This is what I could find: ==============
Black Templars
Iron Knights (self-imposed penitent crusade)
Imperial Fists (sometimes) Crimson Fists (sometimes, though how such a decimated chapter could crusade is not explained)
Mantis Legion (penitent crusade, post Badab revolt) Executioners (ditto) Lamenters (ditto, but since decimated by Nids, same question as Crimson Fists)
Fire Claws (penitent crusade due to a portion of the chapter converting to become Relictor chaos marines)
I don't know if the chapters participating in the Corinthian/Charadon anit-ork crusade are really crusading chaptes as such, but they are:
Ultramarines (also led Balur crusade) Angels of Absolution Lamenters Marines Errant Silver Skulls
Are the Red Templars a crusading chapter?
There is also a Black Crusaders chapter with a jerusalem cross insignia. ?If they are related to the Black Templars with the templar cross insignia, I would expect them to be a crusading chapter, but I didn't find anything saying they were.
Anyone else have any info?

Looks like a solid list from what you can get from the background. The only mistake I can see is the fact that the fire claws BECAME the Relictors, not that the relictors broke appart from them; the whole chapter converted. And they are not chaos dudes.... yet, at least. They "only" use daemon weapons and such, you know, but still beat the poo out of chaos on a regular basis and are counted among the followrrs of the Emperor, even if they are suspicious of potential treason They are still a crusading chapter as a consequence of their practices. it is a penitent crusade imposed for them for following the dictates of an heretic inquisitor. Not that they seem to repent much since they keep collecting demon weapons ad using them, heh.
The crimson fists are not really a crusading chapter but a chapter going around kicking orks because they need to. They are depleted as you say. In older fluff their all remaining members (113 marines) became part of the first company or something like that, so their first company is slightly larger than that of other chapters. I would assume that their crusading status right now comes from the fact that their home world got swarmed by orks and they have to move around the area to stay alive!
The ultras cal crusades agains charadon from time to time. They are full fledged crusades, so yup, the ultras can be considered to have crusading COMPANIES even if the chapter itself is not a crusading one. There are 2 kinds of crusades/crusaders:
1) those that are ALWAYS on crusades, like the black templars
2) those that take part in crusades, even if they are not necessarily a crusading chapter. Most marine chapters belong here.
On a side note, I was wondering what kind of support ships a crusading chapter without a fortress monastery would need. A battle barge is not enough to have forges and ammo factories and other stuff like that on board to suplyu the marines, so IMO it is quite a big issue.
Regards,
Xavi
