Avatar - FREE!

Aspect warhost: 4 x DAs + 4 x Fire dragons (inc exarch + autarch) - 4 Wave serpents - 600
(Very tempted to change this to 4 x DAs, 2 x striking scorpions and 2 x Fire dragons inc exarch and autarch for 4 x 4+ CC attacks, 12 x 4+ FF attacks and 4x 4+ MW, FF attacks - injuries being applied to scorpions first then wave serpents then dire avengers and finally fire dragons.)

Guardian warhost 3 x weapons platforms - 150

Kept to a min size so that they can ride in the Vampire. The only way that i can see to really get any use from the avatar is to ram it down your opponent's throat and guardians are just too slow without the webway or a ride of some sort. I've had a lot of success using the vampire in this manner so far and it is useful to have a flyer (As opposed to, wave serpents for the guardians.

Windrider host: Jetbikes - 200

Falcon troupe inc 2 firestorm - 250

Falcon troupe inc 2 firestorm - 250

Cobra/ Scorpion? - 250

Still undecided here. More offensive firepower would be appreciated. The Cobra is attractive because of it's titan killer blast but more so because of it's AA abilities. However i find it difficult to resist 2x 60cm 3+ MW when used on a double (For JSJ) with a super heavy that moves 25 cm a turn.

Void Spinner - 250

4 x Rangers - 100

Just because i had 100 pts left. It's an extra activation and also a handy garrison unit that may cause some problems with their sniper ability.

Vampire - 200

Phantom Titan (Power fist) - 750
Undecided on the powerfist at the minute too.  It seems like the more flexible option but shortens the optimum range of the titan considerably (From 75 cm to 30 cm when shooting).

What will you put in the Vampire? Not convinced that Aspects in Wave Seprents is really necessary when they could air assault...

From the damage that has been done to some of my hoard armies I would look at taking two Void Spinners instead of a Scorpion / Cobra.

Definately take the powerfist for the Phantom.

Yes I am all against void spinners as someone who has been shot up by them.

So whats the vampire for?

Duh, rereading the post the Vampire is for the Guardians.

IMO this is a good way to get the Guardians trashed soundly, they die like flies in the assault. Even if you just unload them somewhere, the Avatar won´t show up before the start of the next turn.

A Wraithgate seems a better idea, as does having them guard the Blitz and keeping the Avatar in reserve for any comers.

Just to check you do realise that you don't get cover saves for the guardians when they assault, just when they defend?

Look at the first part of the name: "Guard"ians.  They are great to place in overwatch, in cover, guarding your Blitz, and keeping your Farseer nice and safe for potential triple activations.  Put the various Weapon Platforms in there, and they make a nice little hedgehog.

In a direct assault role, they will almost certainly die.

I'm not sure that the gaurdians weapon platforms are allowed in a vampire.

Vampires:

May transport eight of the following units: Autarch, Farseer, Guardian, Striking Scorpions, Howling Banshees, Fire Dragons, Dire Avengers, Swooping Hawks, Warp Spiders, Dark Reapers, Heavy Weapon Platform, Support Weapon Platform, Wraithguard, Rangers.

I must be thinking of the landa not being allowed big guns.
That'll teach me for posting using an iPod and not waiting for the rulebook to load up and check first.

There's a number of reasons for why i'm putting the guardians in the Vampire:

1) Aspects in wave serpents are less of a gamble than in a vampire.  One luck AA strike and they're toast.
2) Aspects in wave serpents can consolidate much further and usually out of retaliation range.
3) An autarch in a vampire doesn't get to use his re-roll whilst off the table.
4) I'm not stupid.  I'm not going to air assault the guardians into something they can't handle.  In fact my favourite trick is to leave them till a very late activation, land next to a unit i want dead that has already activated that turn (And has likely been pulled about the field trying to repond to the movement of the rest of my army)and shoot it with the vampire and weapons platforms (To thin nos and add BMs) in a position to add supporting fire.  Next turn the Avatar is summoned, assaults, the guardians add supporting fire, move 15 cm consolidation and then get to activate.  This combination has been one of my most useful to date.

Guardians left to defend the blitz just seems like a total waste of their and the avatar's potential.  With a 4+ FF value and the ability to summon the avatar they are perfectly suited to adding support to assaults.

Having said that though it is something to consider.  I've not faced off against any deepstrike heavy, air assault marine type lists yet and i will definately bear this in mind.  If the guardians were left to guard the blitz i could drop the Vampire, expand the rangers (Or get another fm of 4) and upgrade the phantom to a Warlock which does have it's appeal....

Cheers for all the comments chaps, defo some food for thought.

Ah, just so you know, lending "supporting fire" doesn't allow you to make a consolidation/follow-up move after a fight.  Only formations directly involved in an assault get that bonus movement.

Doh!  Of course....

I did actually know that.  Got a bit carried away  :vo

I've been known to send the guardians and the Avatar in together on an assault too which seems to work quite well and often opens a hole for the aspects to pour through.

I've had the Avatar fight in two fights, support three others, and make a *real* nuissance of Himself all in one turn before... always remember to put Him in a good new position when He wins His fights!
