Last weekend, I visited Warpy and brought along my as yet untried Eldar, painted in Iyanden colours (I have some 20000Pts of khornate ?BL and LatD and really wanted to do a brighter colour scheme) but using the Ulthw? 2.3 list, updated with the Biel-Tan 1.8 changes. Events in short:
Eldar choose diagonal setup, which the Orks countered by garrisoning most of their units way forward. This led to the Warlock moving up at once to psycannon the Stompa Mob and nearby Stormboyz, which proceeded to charge the titan. As the Warlock was armed with a Power Fist and the Orks failed to get any MWCC into BtB, this led a lot of dead orks and a precarious position for the unbroken remaining garrisons, which Eldar speed and firepower soon began to assail form all sides.
The combat

The Orks managed to cause just one point of damage to the Warlock, which however went critical and lost its Holofield. Doubling up, one of the Blitz Brigades unloaded its Super ZZaps into the Titan, but lucky for me caused just 2 further DC.
If you take a look at the additional pictures over at our german site, you?ll get an idea of the terrain involved: The Orks were getting pushed back against the river where the broken survivors of the assault milled about, while Eldar skimmers began to attack their flanks. The reinforcing Skorchas torched the Guardians wepaon platforms from one Host (all 6 of them) but were stopped on the bridge by heavy fire. The secon Blitz Brigade rushed forward and dispatched the Scorpion EoV which had misjudged the range to them (damn those ZZaps!) but were pulsed to death in Turn 2 by the Swords of Vaul, which shattered the first Blitz Brigade in Turn 3.
The Warlock was broken by further Zzap fire in T2, reduced to but 1 remaining DC, recovered, and was almost destroyed in T3 ?by a last gasp attack by the Deth Koptas.
The Avatar made its appearance in T2 and drove back the 2nd orc warband, which had supported the original assault on the Warlock. Now the Warlock lent its fire to the Avatars? assault, making victory certain and collapsing the orkish position in the city.
Turn 3 was basicall a mob-up action with the Windriders riding roughshod over broken orkish infantry and the remnants of the Stompa Mob and one of the Shields of Vaul pursuing the Skorchas which had broken from concentrated fire.
Eldar casualities were remarkably light at 2xJetbikes, 1xVyper, 3x Hvy Wpn Plat, 3x Support Plat, the Scorpion and 5 DC on the Warlock. That the titan survived was a miracle, it got zapped 3 times and saved a couple of ordinary hits.
The Orks took massive losses, all of the infantry except for a few Stormboyz, basically all of the Stompa Mob and both BBs and the KoS badly mauled.
Comments:
The real star was of course the Warlock, which dealt in the Orks a mortal blow in the opening stages of the battle and had the nerve to keep fighting despite losing its Holofield and getting zapped repeatedly.
The Swords of Vaul performed quite nicely, I?m used to Land Raiders and these skimmers with 35cm make for some great maneuvering. Similiarly, the Shields were quite useful as well. the 1xNS+2xFS combo was everything I had hoped for, a deterrent against bunching up (my opponent died and suffered for it) combined with great AA and good direct firepower. I?m quite happy with using that single NS in an assault gun role,
Also, my three Windrider troupes did great flanking, with the Vypers placing invaluable BM.
The Guardians didn?s see much of a fight, I think I should have marched them early on, but there just wasn?t enough cover for my tastes. Also, one host could have been used to guard my Blitz, not necessary in this game but maybe in others.
