With steady thumping steps and the roaring sound of the engines warboss Iggasnak marched into the ruins of the Imperial city. His boyz had long since kicked out the beakies, but some of them had said they'd found something weird in the ruins, hidden in a big warehouse.

Even then he had thought it was only going to be trouble. As he approached he was getting more and more reports that the croozer Eadsmasha had gone quiet, far too quiet. He didn't trust this, didn't trust this at all....

4000pts a side Dark eldar vs Orks

Orks:
3 Uge Boyz mobs - 1 with 12 dreadnoughts
1 mob of 14 Biggunz with 2 oddboyz
1 flight of 3 fightabommas
1 flight of 9 fightabommas
2 Gunwagon mobs (10 strong) with 3 spleenrippas each
1 Gargant with Warboss Iggasnak

The Ork Horde

Dark Eldar:
Wraithgate
Kashnarak
Coteri with Archon and Pleasure barge
2 Vessels of Pain
2 Raven
2 Razorwing
6 strong wych cult + Dracon
Talos with 2 perditor
8 Strong syndicate with Slavebringer
6 strong syndicate
Scourges
Mandrakes
Torture class cruiser
Ravager flotilla

A Shadow of Dark Eldar

Deployment:
The Battlefield was offered a large of amount of ruinous cover, and was dominated by a single large ruin in the centre:

The Field

The Orks rapidly garrisoned themselves wherever possible, getting as close as they could to the enemy before the game had even begun.

Big Gunz take point near centre
Central wraithgate dominated by Orcs
Missile silo on the left also taken
Observation point on the right as well

The Torture cruiser had planned its bombardment for the central warehouse ruin where the wraithgate was, expecting the orks to be drawn to the large area of cover.

Dark Eldar deployment was cautious, keeping units either in or behind cover wherever possible. The Heavy barges went to the right, close to the more central Talos and the Coteri and Syndicate that had deployed almost directly ahead of the wraithgate. Ravagers held the left flank, whilst everything else remained either ready to teleport, land, fly in, or jump out of the webway.

The Archon observes deployment from his barge of pleasure

Turn 1:
Initiative fell to the orks, who rapidly began to consolidate their position by placing the big gunz on overwatch. The Dark Eldar ignored them, far more concerned about the armada of fighta bommas on the horizon and placed the Ravens on CAP. A sudden massive bombardment shrieked down against the orcs near the wraithgate, making more noise than damage and managed to inflict a few blast markers on both the big gunz and the central mob, but killing only 2 stands despite hitting 14! A barrage of pinpoint attacks did however strip the shields from the gargant.

The Orks were enraged and sent forward the first fighta wave of 3 to attack the ravagers. The Ravens quickly responded...

Knocking all three out of the sky in a single volley.

Quickly following this success the Razorwings went onto CAP barely in time to see the Ork Luffwaffa strike against the ravens. The Razorwings pelted forward, shooting down one of the ork fighta craft but not in time to stop the ravens being annihilated.

The Dark Eldar responded quickly, the Slavebringer sweeping in by the missile silo. The Warriors within raced out, sweeping into assault against the Orks near that leftmost objective and blasting them with splinter rifles. The fighting was fierce, both sides inflicting light casualties. A second round was fought, but this time the orks were cut down badly and were forced to withdraw quickly into the cover afforded by the ruins closer to their lines.

Landing strategically...

The Slavebringer's AA turret was now bearing against the withdrawing fightas...

Retaining, the Perditors opened fire, bombarding the big gunz closely packed far too close to the wraithgate for their liking. Despite several possible hits, none of the landed.

The Ork dread mob clambered forward towards the Dark eldar flank, trying to garner some shots against the Talos, but failing to land any hits at all.

The Syndicate and the Vessels of pain both doubled, taking pot shots at the mob as they moved across to the extreme right and behind cover from the enemy mob

Blasters to the fore!
Strafing attacks

The Gunwagon mobs charged into action. The first raced up towards the Talos, smashing one of the Perditors and two Talos, breaking the unit in a barrage of firepower that sent the survivors pulling rapidly back.

The second gunwagon mob charged down the opposite flank, blasting away at the shadowbringer as it stayed vulnerable on the ground. Despite their firepower, the shadowfields prevented any of them scoring more than a single hit which was simply absorbed by the field itself.

Attempted attacks by the flotilla and coterie on the central mob near the wraithgate failed to dislodge it and the Dark eldar pulled back out of range and line of sight.

Much to the Dark Eldars disgust, the central orks merely went onto Overwatch, watching carefully as whatever tried to come out of the wraithgate faced the combined firepower of a largely unbowed uge mob and a large mass of big gunz.

Seeing an opportunity to race past this mass of foes and to strike the broken orc mob on the left, the wych cult attempted to race free, but obviously had other ideas, refusing to move.

Waiting as patiently as Orks can, the Gargant clambered forward, unable to do more than march towards the centre. Even as it did so the Kashnarak finally broke free of the webway

The massed overwatch fire took off half its hits before it struck, the creature swiftly annihilating 4 ork stands before being cut down in turn.

As the turn ended, the Orks on the left and the Talos rallied, whilst the Shadowbringer failed to shoot down any more fightas.

Turn 2:
Again Initiative fell to the orks who saw the chance to strike the Archon from existence. Both Gunwagon mobz activated, doubling through the terrain to get a huge amount of firepower against the barge of pleasure. Despite the weight of shots, the Barge weathered the storm, losing only a single DC and its shadowfields - much to the relief of the Dark eldar.

Oh not good

The Archon swiftly enacted revenge, as the advanced across to strike one group of gunwagons at the rear. The combined weight of fire took out over half of the ork vehicles, breaking the rest in short order.

Worried about possible Fighta attacks the Archon then retained and engaged the remaining gunwagons with all speed. The Gunwagons were annihilated in the ensuing fight, with not a single casualty to the Dark eldar! Taking the option to do so the Incubi withdrew into some nearby ruins for cover.

The orks maintained their positions, again placing the big guns on overwatch. The Dark Eldar were taking no chances and the wyches swept out of the wraithgate to attack the freshly rallied ork mob. The Dracon made swift work of them, breaking the mob again for no losses in return and sending them packing, roughly a third of their strength remaining.

The Drachite races to glory!

The left flank belonged to the Dark eldar.

The dread mob clanked forward through the ruins to attack the syndicate on the extreme right flank, a barrage of big shootas only inflicting one hit which failed to destroy a raider.

The Raiders withdrew quickly, finding cover in the ruins that had housed the Talos, whilst the Razorwings went onto CAP.

The Gargant then took its turn, a barrage of firepower all but annihilating the syndicate that had just moved and reducing it to a single broken Raider!

Little else occurs as both sides consolidate their positions or failing to inflict damage.

Of the broken formations on the table, only the Raider rallies, all others continuing to withdraw with all haste.

Turn 3:
The Dark Eldar gain the initiative at last and the Vessels of Pain sustain fire against the dread mob, causing exactly enough hits and damage to break them. The dreads withdraw back into cover towards the ork lines even as the pleasurebarge is wracked by shots from the fightabommas. The barge is destroyed, and despite the Razorwings flying in to strike the orks they fail to inflict any damage.

The Warriors begin a long chase up the left flank after the broken mob, trying to whittle them down with AP fire and blast markers as the wyches and Incubi ready to strike to the central mob who remain stubbornly near the wraithgate.

In an attempt to strike and finish off the broken gunwagons, the Ravagers race over the central mob and open fire against the broken ork vehicles. They manage to destroy two, but the ork response is brutal, the Ork mob in the ruins blazing down one of them, whilst the big gunz move up to finish off the flotilla.

Abortive strike

Other attacks are minor, with most other units merely moving to consolidate their positions in or around the centre as the Orks become increasingly surrounded.

It becomes increasingly clear that ork airpower is extremely wary of the Dark eldar, and increasingly it looks as though the Dark Eldar have grasped hold of the sky.

Of the broken units only the dread mob rallies, finding itself comfortably on the ork side of the table, close to the observation point. The Gunwagons continue to withdraw after the shadowbringer picks more off and a crash as they barge through terrain leaves only a single survivor.

Turn 4:
The Dark Eldar finally remember their teleporter units, the scourges landing by the gargant atop one of the few intact buildings whilst the mandrakes stay close by the talos who have by now advanced deeper into the right flank and close to the now rallied dread mob. However the turn sees remarkably little action, with only positioning and snap shots on the flanks as the Dark Eldar warriors continue to chase off the remains of the ork mob on the left, and the talos and mandrakes prepare to take the observation point.

Ork hunting...

The centre sees far more action as the Archon leads the incubi and wyches against the central mob after an initial bombardment from the remaining perditor.

The combat is brutal, both sides losing 6 stands! the Dark Eldar break and withdraw for cover, the fightas sweeping in to strike down the archon whilst they have the chance. This time the razorwings shoot down two of their number, just enough to allow the Archon to survive as the rest of the coterie is scattered.

Might have a problem here...

Blasting away

The Vessels of pain also lead the attack, smashing at the gargant. The gargant ignores them, concentrating on the scourges alongside the big gunz who manage to kill one stand and break the mob between them. The scourges fall back a little but remain near cover.

The scourges swiftly rally, but they and the wyches are the only formations to do so, leaving the Archon tremendously vulnerable.

Turn 5:
The Orks begin the turn with a brutal assault against the mandrakes closing against the observation point. The dreads clank forward, losing two of their number to the shadowed Eldar before striking back and killing three of the mandrake stands! Despite this the Mandrakes manage to not only win the combat but win by such a margin as to reduce the mob to only 2 stands!

Almost immediately the Orks send in their fighta bommas, but this time against the warriors who have chased the fleeing orks so deep into the ork flank that they threaten the blitz objective.

Razorwings strike!

The warriors survive the worst of it although they do break and withdraw into cover nearby.

The Dark Eldar sustain fire with the heavy barges, blasting chunks off the Gargant. The mighty war machine prepares to attack but before it can do so, the shadowbringer swings in, striking it twice and breaking it!

Sustained fire

The Orks hold their positions, the remaining dark eldar attacks weathered by cover or heavy armour.

The warriors rally, along with the gargant and the last gunwagon, even so, the Archon fails again to do so...

Turn 6:
The Dark Eldar claimed initiative and struck hard against the Gargant with the Vessels of pain, reducing it to slag. With their commander gone, the orks fortifty themselves in the centre as the Dark Eldar begin sweeping around on both flanks. The broken ork mobs on the flank continue to be whittled down despite the fighta bommas again striking at the warriors deep within Ork lines.

As the Orks find themselves increasingly surrounded and picked off one by one, they realise the awful truth, and the final stroke is made as the wyches sweep past the orks and take the blitz objective.

With 3 objectives completed and none by their enemy, the Dark Eldar claim victory!

Hey Tarrisvaal, thanks for the batrep.  I have many questions as you can imagine.
A. First off, what is up with 6 turns?  Did you play the tournament rules where you roll the D6 and on a six you go for the next turn or did you just play until somebody yielded?

B. Kashnarak.  Correct me if I'm wrong but it appears that you used it incorrectly.  The Kashnarak is supposed to appear on the battlefield before any turn, not during the turn itself.  In other words it would have to appear before the turn 1 strategy roll or the turn 2 strategy roll, etc.

C. More questions to follow :)

Thanks for the report. :)  Also IIRC aircraft annot shoot flaks at the end phase when other aircraft are disengaging. (I think that was your plan with slavebringer)

We decided between us that we wanted to play until someone was clearly in the lead, most of the game the victory objectives were very close (or no one had any :) )

B. Kashnarak.  Correct me if I'm wrong but it appears that you used it incorrectly.  The Kashnarak is supposed to appear on the battlefield before any turn, not during the turn itself.  In other words it would have to appear before the turn 1 strategy roll or the turn 2 strategy roll, etc.

Bum. Good point, that was my bad

Sorry about that, I was worried I was limited to the number of images i can have up online at one time, the links are just a safeguard against that :)

That was indeed my cunning plan. It missed anyway this time, but I'll remember not to try that next time :)
