Unable to wait until tomorrow when I actually have an opponent, I decided to do a solo run with 1.6 as I got time over the last two evenings. ?I haven't played a solo game for over a decade, and spent some time looking for resources for solo play online (to no avail). In the end I decided to just ?I randomly determine (within reason) the contents of 3K eldar and ork lists and play both sides as best I could.

All exp rules of which I am aware (except air) were used.
Eldar 1.6 changes my group is trialing at present are all of *, plus ?pulse change and SoV option (though no SoV were in this battle).

Turn 1:



Above can be seen the setup. Eldar rangers are garrisoned on overatch in the centre of the table, The Nightspinners and Jetbikes are behind them under the AA umbrella of the phantom and cobras. The Reapers, Hawks, and both guardians are off table, one lot of guardians in the Vampire.

The Orks Garrison their Gunz in their centre, Warband and Stormboyz in the building to their left.

Objectives eb, e1, e2 are eldar. ob, o1, o2 (should be in red text - doh!) are ork.

SR: won by Orks.

The ork fighta bombas divebomb the nightspinners, losing 1 of their number to AA and placing a BM on the spinners.

Phantom sustains killing 3 Gunz.

Gunz double foward (staying in cover) and shoot the Rangers placing a BM.

Spinners sustain on Gunz placing 2 BM.

Buggies double and shoot rangers, taking OW fire, both sides take a BM.

Vampire ground attacks Blitz Brigade wrecking 2 gunwagonz.

Warbikes double and shoot rangers killing one.

Cobras double forward, pop up and shoot the warbikes, killing two.

Warband doubles across the river (two stands swept away!) and shoots the rangers, killing one and causing a casualty. The broken rangers fall back to Eldar objective 2 (e2).

Jetbikes fail test and move behind the building to the eldar left.

Ork Blitz Brigade doubles forward and shoots the phantom. 3 MW to hit rolls and the Zzap are all 6's! Fortunately for the eldar the holofields save all but 1 point of damage.

Dark Reapers gate on and shoot buggies killing two.

Stormboyz march to ruins on eldar right.

Great Gargant marches down road and into ruins, taking point of damage in process.

All formations rally except eldar rangers, which fall back to their eldar baseline objective. Below is a view of the battlefield at the end of turn 1 before rallies.

Turn 2:

The swooping hawks drop down to the building on the eldar left, taking 2 BM.

SR won by Eldar.

Cobras shoot bikes (killing 1) and double back behind hill on eldar left.

Phantom shoots blitz brigade (killing 3) and moves behind hill.

Great Gargant doubles and shoots Dark Reapers (5 out of 6 MW attacks (needing 5+) ?hit(!!), as does one zzap gun! The Autarch manages to roll a 6 and lives, but the formation is down to 3 broken units and retreats behind the building on the eldar left. The gargant has at least stubbed its toe again and taken as second point of damage from smashing through all the ruins.

The buggies retain, doubling towards the eldar blitz and shoot the Nightspinners (placing a BM).

The Nightspinners sustains, placing only ?a BM on the Blitz Brigade.

The Blitz Brigade doubles to the eldar blitz and shoots the NIghtspinners - the zzap gun kills one of them. ? The Nightspinners break and retreat behind the hill in the centre of the battlefield on the eldar left.

The jetbikes engage the buggies, but lose the FF and 3 of their number for the loss of one buggy. They join the Nightspinner to commiserate.

The warbikes race over the hill towards the broken eldar units and shoot the NIghtspinners killing one.

The Swooping Hawks engage and wipe out the warbikes.

Ork warband doubles forward towards the eldar objectives, and shoots and kills another ranger.

The Vampire ground attacks the Blitz Brigade killing one of them and breaking the formation, which retreats to the centre of the battlefield behind cover.

The Stormboyz march (using reroll) and occupy the building on the eldar left.

The Big Gunz try to go on overwatch, fail, and just drag their gunz back towards their blitz.

Rallying: All formations rally except for the Dark Reapers, Buggies, Big Gunz,

Turn 3:

SR won by Eldar.

The phantom shoots the buggies killing 3 and breaking them (they flee back to the big gunz), and moves to within FF range of the stormboyz.

The cobras move, kill a couple of the warband and then retreat back behind the hill.

The rallied blitz brigade doubles to the eldar blitz again, and shoots the cobras, killing one of them. The remaining cobra retreats behind the hill with the jetbikes and swooping hawks.

The ranger doubles forward towards the warband as a delaying action and places a BM them with shooting.

The Warband engages and eliminates ?the ranger, and consolidates forward towards the eldar objectives.

The Swooping Hawks double to within 15cm of the Big Gunz and Ork blitz.

The Vampire and Guardians do an air assault on the big gunz, wiping them out for the loss of 3 guardians. ?The swooping hawks conslidate across the river heading towards the two objectives that way (edit - a mistake they were supporting so shouldn't have been able to do this - made no difference to end result though). The guardians conslidate into the ruins and hold the ork blitz.



The Gargant doubles and shoots the Phantom (causing only 1 BM) but moving to within FF range...

The Stormboyz retain and assault the Phantom supported by the Gargant. The combat lasts for two rounds(!) but the phantom cannot stand up to the overwhelming support from the Gargant and is destroyed. 1 Stormboy survives and retreats broken back to the building it had assaulted from.



The guardians gate in (using reroll) and shoot the warband killing a gretchin and ork stand.

The fighta bombaz straff the jetbikes causing a BM.

The jetbikes march to contest the eldar blitz... (if their action test roll had been a 1 or 2 the game would have been over here!).

Rallies:

Jetbikes fail, Blitz brigade pass, Dark Reapers fail (and move forward to building), Warband pass, Guardians fail, Stormboyz fail, swooping hawks pass, buggies fail (reroll), cobra fail.

Victory conditions: ?1 all. Eldar Blitz, Orks Break their Spirit.

Turn 4:

Avatar is summoned to the crucial situation at the Eldar objective triangle.



SR won by Eldar.

The Vampire ground attacks the blitz brigade, killing only one of them.

The Avatar then engages (bringing the guardians with him) the ork warband and intermingled blitz brigade. The orks countercharge drawing the jetbikes into the engagement.  2 Gretchin, 1 ork, 1 nob, 1 gunwagon fall on the ork side, and only 1 guardian on the eldar side. The orks highest roll is 2, the eldar a 6! both ork units retreat towards the gargant, 7 more of the ork warband dying in the rout.  All the Eldar consolidate to hold the eldar objectives but trying to stay out of FF range of the gargant...

Angry at what has happened the Ork Warlord orders the Gargant to about face, and advances to contest both the Eldar blitz and Wraithgate. In a volley of fire the Guardians lose 5 of their formation and break and retreat.



The fighta bombaz retain, straffing the jetbikes and breaking them so that now the Gargant has both blitz and take and hold objectives...

The Swooping Hawks then march to contest all Eldar objectives...



The orks are out of activations. The Eldar guardians at the ork blitz start moving toward the other objectives in case the game goes another turn.

Rallies: Dark Reapers Pass (reroll), Buggies Fail, Jetbikes pass, Stormboyz fail, Cobra pass, Blitz Brigade pass (reroll), Guardians fail, Warband fail.

Victory Conditions: 1 all again. Eldar have Blitz, Orks Break Their Spirit.  

Game does not go another turn and orks score a technical victory with 175 points ahead...

Conclusion etc...

Well that was actually quite fun to play! More than I expected from a solo game, maybe the activation system and step by step decisions is suited to it...  I guess the 'draw' type result may also be more expected if you play solo  :D

The plans I set for both sides were crushed... The orks was to score the victory triangle of objectives in the Eldar half (standard ork plan), and contest their own with Kults or small units and destroy as much eldar as possible in the process.

The Eldar plan was to ignore the Gargant and smash all the other ork units (espcially the fast moving stuff), and grab objectives (hence the two take and holds way out on the ork right - which turned out to be a bridge too far for the eldar as well - run out of activations).

Ork shooting was generally pretty good (stunningly so in some cases), the eldar shooting was generally poor. Both sides had a bit of luck in engage actions.


Eldar changes:
-SS: absolutely necessary.
-Jetibkes save: didn't make an actual difference this game, but from my Ork POV they seemed more worthwhile for target selection, and a little bit less of a annoyance in engages.
-Ignore cover loss by Cobras: big difference - the gargant was always in cover... and it never really seemed worthwhile to attack it when there were 9 shields to get through. Oh for the old days when D-cannons ignored shields! Still deeply confused about Cobras...  :O
-Wraithguard: no longer an auto selection, feels much much better.
-Pulse - I like.


One other comment - damn I hate marching to grab objectives!! Feels wrong.

Anyway I am probably playing my mates ultramarines tomorrow - will see how that goes.
