Managed to get a battle in today with a gaming friend, Glenn. It was Glenn's first use of his new army. I will post pics for this later... He was using his recently fully painted IG Steel Legion 166th Armoured which you can see in full glorious colour here: 166th Armoured And I used my recently un-packed Tau army (which is still in progress) EDIT: annoyingly, now I retype this batrep I find that I took too many damn points!! Bah! the Stealth units were over the points cost. Dammit! My deepest apologies Glenn... People this is what happens when you are not prepared - if you forget your armylist and write it on the fly you screw people over. ![]() ![]() ![]() 166th: 1st Formation:Mechanised Regimental HQ Company with added Hellhounds and Hydra 1 Supreme Commander Unit 12 Infantry Units 7 Chimeras 3 Hellhound 1 Hydra 2nd Formation:Tank Company with added Hydra 1 Lemun Russ Vanquisher 9 Lemun Russ 1 Hydra 3rd Formation:Super-Heavy Tank Company with added Inf Platoon, Fire Support Platoon and Hydra 3 Shadowsword Tanks 4 Support Squad Units 1 Hydra 6 Infantry Units 4th Formation:Storm Trooper Platoon with Valkyrie transports 8 Storm Trooper Units 4 Valkyries 5th Formation: Artillery Battery 3 Manticore Rocket Launchers 6th Formation: Rough Rider Platoon 6 Rough Rider Units 7th Formation: Sentinel Squadron 4 Sentinels Tau 1st Expeditionary Force 1st Formation:Crisis Battle Suit Cadre 4 C-Bs 2 C-Bs 1 Shas'O 2nd Formation: Armoured Hunter Cadre 6 RC-Hammerheads 1 Network Drones 3rd Formation: Armoured Hunter Cadre 6 Ion-Hammerheads 1 Network Drones 4th Formation: Fire Warrior Cadre 8 FW 4 Devilfish 1 Ethereal 5th Formation: Stingray Contingent 4 Stingray 2 Stingray 6th Formation: Pathfinder Contingent 4 Pathfinders 2 Devilfish 7th Formation: Pathfinder Tetra Contingent 6 Tetras 8th Formation: Barracuda Fighter Squadron 3 Barracuda fighters 9th Formation: Mako (AX-1-0) Tank Buster 1 Mako Bomber 10th Formation: Hero Cruiser 1 Hero Class Cruiser no upgrades EDIT:11th formation: free Stealth Contingent??! BAH! Idiot! Engagement Commences Turn 1 IG garrison Valks and Stormtroopers & Sentinels Tau don't garrison Guard win intiative (Tau roll 1) 1/The Manticore battery opens proceedings with a barrage placed on the Fire Warriors and manages to kill 1xFW and 1xDF 2/C-Bs double forward to take up positions on the Western end of the central city area and lay down light fire on the Mech Inf. Coy. but with no kills (only a few of the suits were in range) 3/Tau retain and the Ion-HH's advance to pour fire onto the garrisoned Valkyries and their Stormtrooper payload managing to kill 3x STs and 3 Valkyries with a withering volley. 4/The Mechanised Coy. doubles forward to give the C-Bs in cover of the buildings a bit of a shock but the battlesuits shrug off a couple of hits. 5/The heavens open with the Hero Class Cruiser's pin-point attacks striking down onto the SHT, smiting two of the Shadowswords into molten slag. 5 & 6 rolled for each of the attacks. 6/The SHT Coy then doubles forward to the Eastern end of the central city block for cover and to gain some ground. 7/Seeing the SHT Coy massing on the city block, the Stingray contingent pop-up sustain and unleash hell upon the PBI sheltering in the buildings and woods behind, Killing 8x Infantry and breaking the SHT Coy which pulls back to the rear of the woods the ypartially occupy. 8/The Tau retain and the RC-HH's advance to put the Mechanised Infantry Coy in their sights, but the wily Guard Commander calls for his men to keep their heads down and not a shot strikes its target. 9/The fleeting Sentinels double across the field and down the city's main street to open up on the Crisis Cadre but their haste forces the accuracy down and the armour of the Crisis suits saves them again. 10/Diving out of the sun to the West, the flight of Barracudas launch a strafing run on the re-loading Manticores, catching their crews with their pants down. Their run is somewhat costly however, as the Leman Russ Coy's Hydra deftly brings down one of the swift aircraft on the way in. The remaining planes proceed to obliterate the Manticores, removing the artillery threat for the Tau. 11/Deployed out on the western-most flank the Russ Coy's commander realises that he is a long way from the Eastern-deployed Tau lines, so orders his Coy to march towards the city. 12/Pulse rifles blasting away to no avail, the Tetras whined across from the Western open-country to take up positions to the South of the central city, their Markerlights lighting up the Mechanised Coy for the next attack. 13/The Rough Rider platoon now thundered its way across the battlefield, marching to a position along-side the Leman Russ Company, bringing the Guard manouvers to an end for a brief pause. 14/Swooping in low on the horizon and running the gauntlet of the Imperial Guard Flak corridor, the Mako bomber delivers its deadly payload on target after taking a hit on approach - its armour deflecting the majoity of the attack. It's RailCannons burning the air with super high-velocity rounds, it finishes off the beleaguered SHT Company, destroying the last Shadowsword and the broken Hydra. 15/The Fire Warrior Cadre, witnessing the destruction reaped by the Mako, give a cheer and regain some wits about them from the artillery barrage mauling, moving into the dead ground on the far side of the hill to their immediate right. 16/Moving in over the southern hill to lend weight of fire to the growing central city engagement, the Pathfinder Contingent advance to contact with the Mechanised Company, laying down what suppressing fire they can at the well-ensconsed enemy infantry but fail to hit their mark. END Phase The Guard only manage to remove all suppression from the bloody-nosed Storm Trooper and Valkyrie platoon. Luckily, the Tau manage the same with the Crisis Cadre as a ?Guard Mechanised Company assault is fast looming. |

Turn 2 Tau deploy the Stealth formation in the woods around the un-manned Eastern Tau objective Again the crafty Guard Commander wins the initiative! (Tau roll 1 again...) 1/With support from the nearby Sentinels, the Mechanised Inf Coy swiftly move in to engage the C-Bs in a deadly fire-fight assault. In the ensuing carnage the Cadre bravely eliminates an APC and its 2-squad load but is completely destroyed, the Shas'O also falling in the hail of burning flame, las and auto-cannon fire. 2/With martial vigour, the Sentinels bound forward from the victorious engagement to assault the nearby Tetras - who are now slightly shell-shocked from the previous assault (1 BM) - but fail to knock out any of the fleeting Tetras. In the ensuing counter the charge, the Tetras regain their wits and knock out a Sentinel for an even result - only to have their hopes dashed as their resolve fails. Tetras break 3/Seething at the loss of their great Commander, the Ion-HH's advance to their right and take up position on the southern hill top. Using the guidance of the Pathfinders markerlights the pour another salvo into the battered Mechanised Coy., their Ion cannons brewing up the Hellhounds and the company Hydra. 4/The Russ Coy commander senses his time to strike and his company now opens up on the Ion-HH's but their shots glance off the solid Tau armour and the Russ Commander curses his luck. 5/Repaying their mighty Shas'O's death the only way they know how, the Stingrays advance towards the Mechanised Coy and unleash their volley of Sub-munitions and Seekers using the Pathfinders markerlights for guidance. two more Chimeras are knocked out and 3 squads of infantry are mown down, the Company breaking under the weight of fire, retreating to the west and out of the city. 6/With the growing momentum of the Tau onslaught, the Pathfinders now attempt to advance on the now stranded Sentinels but the oncoming Leman Russ Coy to west shakes their troop leader's fortitude and they remain in place(failed action), but their weapons are still accurate and they destroy 2 more Sentinels breaking the remaining Sentinel, which retreats into ruined building (containing the second Tau objective)on the north side of the city. 7/Needing to regroup his troops, the Storm Trooper platoon commander does just that 8/Still a bit wobbly of leg from the artillery barrage, the Fire Warriors still manage to march north to marry-up with the newly arrived Stealth suits in the woods. 9/With the objective now well in safe hands, the Stealth Suits sally forth and engage the lonely sentinel in the ruins, easily disposing of it in the very brief firefight and recapturing their 2nd objective. 10/Seemingly held in reserve of better things to come didn't sit with the Rough Rider platoon and they unwisely marched to the west of the southern hilltop and the rapidly massing Tau forces there. 11/With radio chatter from the Pathfinders signalling the Rough Riders' approach, the RC-HH's formation's commander orders his tanks to advance to the rear slope of the southern hill for a pop-up volley on the Rough Rider platoon. With luck on their side however, the Emperor seemingly watching the Rough Riders for a split second, their bravery drawing His gaze, only 2 of their Cavalry Troops are killed. 12/With the Guard manouvers again slowing, the Tau Airforce again pounces - this time the hapless Storm Trooper platoon are the target of the remaining 2 Barracudas and they streak in from the east this time to strafe the Guardsmen in the central north wood. Only the one aircraft strikes its target but it is the inspiring Commisar that goes to meet the Emperor. 13/With the Guard flak umbrella rapidly declining, the Mako roars in from the Tau's rear lines to strafe the Leman Russ Coy on their exposed flank as they move Eastward. With it's Hydra deployed on the formation's right flank it is the nearest target for the Mako and it easily disposes of the threat, but not before coming under attack from it's target's flak attacks (which only manage to bounce on its armour) END Phase The Guard rally their Rough Riders(3BMs) and the the suppressed Leman Russ Coy(1BM) The Tau rally their still-suppressed Fire Warriors(4BMs), the Ion-HH's(2BMs) and their Pathfinders(1BM) turn 3 I will post tomorrow.... |

Looking great so far Dobbsy, if you keep this high standard up you shall have to do bat reps all the time! As for the over points...I feel a little better now after getting blown off the battlefield. I have sumarily executed all surviving officers and sent the regiment back for a rest and refit. As the commissars day, "Only in the fires of battle can a sword be truely forged..." The pics took a while to email but I hope you will find the result worth it. Will have to work out a way of taking better pics of the whole battlefield as I hate the effect the flash has on the wideshots. Look forward to reading the conclussion, Glenn |

Yeah still can't apologise enough. The only thing I can offer you in this mess is the fact that at least the Stealths only killed a broken Sentinel. ![]() |

Two thoughts: a) Never feel sorry for doing well as long as you did not cheat. Sometimes the dice and the set up plays well for a particular side. So be it. It is a game afterall. ![]() b) As I posted over on another thread, great looking army. Would love to see a close up of the Launcher Stand. Either way, this was a nice write up and sounds like a great game. dafrca |

Turn 3 Intiative is tied this round so defaults to the Tau. 1/With the remaining Rough Riders posing a serious threat to the Pathfinders on the forward slopes of the southern hill, the Stingrays are once again called in to deal with them. Advancing towards the hill they pop-up to fire their Sub-munitions again, wiping out all of the dangerous Rough Riders platoon 2/Now that Rough Riders are no more, the Pathfinders see the on-coming juggernaut that is the Leman Russ Coy now fast approaching. Co-ordinating fire with the nearby RC-HH's and Ion-HH's the Pathfinders attempt to disrupt the Guard tank company's impending attack. 26(!!!) Seeker missiles, Ion and Rail cannon shots all arc towards their targets but, incredibly, the thick armour of the Leman Russ Coy saves all but 2 of the tanks and they narrowly avoid a rout(1BM short) 3/With the main body of the Guard army now in disarray, the Storm Trooper Platoon commander desperately tries to roust his men to get back in the fight but his cries fall on deaf ears(probably from all the high explosive that the Storm Troopers have had visited upon them) and his platoon is forced to hold their position and regroup once again. 4/From the Eastern-most hill the remaining 2 brave Tetra pilots attempt to aid their fellow Tau and streak across the field to light up the Russ Company with their markerlights. Feeling a sense of defiance, the Tetras also loose shots from their pulse rifles at the leading elements of the Leman Russ Coy and their haphazard shots are said to have forced the lead tanks to button up(1BM!), bringing the whole formation to a grinding halt and routing the heavy tank company from the field! 5/His army battered and broken, the Guard Regimental Commander cannot coax anything more from his beaten men this day.... After hasty discussion the Tau acting-commanders come to the conclusion that continuing the battle against an already defeated army would not serve the Greater Good's interest and call a halt to the carnage. Tau win 3-1 on objectives Tau - Take and Hold, BTS and They Shall Not Pass IG - BTS Aftermath Well, it's amazing to know, I think I failed 2 activation rolls the entire game even while under blast markers - I haven't gotten those kind of results using Space Marines! I had a lucky rolling day. In respect to the Tau army list, I can say that none of the Tau units I fielded felt "wrong". They generally deliver their firepower with devastating results - as they should - but the whole time I played I was terribly wary of assaults by the larger Guard formations - it felt exactly as it should playing Tau - a kind of balance. I will say that even though we hit quite well, the lack of MW shots in the list could seriously hamper a strong Leman Russ company push. While I managed to break it in the end I think that had Glenn chosen a different deployment and been on top of the Tau early on with this formation I would have struggled. My first use of the Mako ![]() In regards to the game as a whole, as i said, I think things would have been drastically different if Glenn had deployed his Russ Company in the centre of his zone rather than out on the far left flank(from my point of view). The sheer firepower this unit can soak up is really quite scary and I think I would have been hard pressed to deal with it while his Infantry company assaulted my forward units. I'm not looking forward to dealing with the changes he has implemented with his new army list. BTS Leman Russ Company + attachments(13-14 vehicles!) That will pose a serious problem for the Tau even with Rail cannons. |

Thanks for the batrep Dobbsy. Just one complaint though... I've seen your Tau army, some fantastic modelling and painting. I checked out your opponents army on his painting diary, also some great looking models. So where are the pictures!?!?! ![]() Two really nice looking armies fighting a great battle, that seems like it was good fun (especially for the victorious Tau methinks) thats what the games about. Regarding the LR company, I have found the "coordinated crossfire" to be effective. Use coordinated fire to set up a crossfire and you can usually stack up a fair number of BMs, so that the mass firepower of the LRs gets mostly suppressed. |

Geez, I just realised after reading the report that we played the 'Break Their Sprit' victory condition wrong - you needed to completely destroy the LR's to get that one. Makes the end result a little more respectable, although you still had plenty of formations left to hammer me with. I eagerly await the rematch. |

Not the first time we have fluffed the rules unintentionally Dobbsy. We'll get it right one day. Besides, I had a great time and that was the main thing. |
