This was the second Tau battle of the weekend.  I didn't participate, but refereed for two of my friends.

I'm very interested to hear the results of this battle. Just judging by what the IG fielded, I would expect the Tau to get wiped out with extreme prejudice.   :/

Setup

4x4 table
Tau chose edge deployment.

Garrisons and Deployment

Tau garrisoned one Pathfinder Contingent in ruins near their Blitz and the other in the ruined cathedral with the Kroot Kindred forming a ragged picket line between them.

Steel Legion garrisoned their Sentinel Squadron in ruins near IG Objective 1..

Tau deployed remaining formations in widely spaced groups near their deployment edge.

IG deployed their artillery batteries and Hydra formation around their Blitz while the two Superheavy Companies were placed on the IG near and far right flank.

Turn 1

Strategy roll: Tau

Stingray Contingent 1 doubles up the flank to pop up and fire at Artillery Battery 1, scoring no hits.

Artillery Battery 2 attempts to sustain fire, but Tau jamming distracts the gunners and they are only able to fire a single volley of missiles (2BP) at Pathfinder Contingent 2, just able to see the Tau in the towers of the ruined Cathedral, but doing no damage. ?(This may have been the first time that Manticores had a direct fire solution on targets in the first turn on our battlefield? *laugh*)

The Kroot rush forward to engage the dug-in Sentinels and a fierce battle ensues (2 rounds); 3 Kroot die and one Sentinel is wrecked, but, despite their numbers, the Kroot lose and are sent packing.

Artillery Battery 1 prepares to sustain fire, but they too are jammed, and only manage to regroup, clearing their blast markers.

Pathfinder Contingent 2 doubles forward to mark the nearby Superheavy Companies while firing on the Sentinels. ?The Commissar is killed along with another Sentinel and the lone remaining walker breaks and flees.

The Baneblades advance on the nearby Pathfinders and unleash a withering hail of fire, supplemented by the Leman Russ and the Hydra? and destroy 2 Devilfish and a single unit of Pathfinders; the survivors fall back.

Pathfinder Contingent 1 mounts up and doubles towards the Baneblades, firing ineffectively, but marking many nearby targets.

The Hydras attempt to advance over the hill, but jamming is affecting them as well, and they slowly trundle forward without firing.

Stingray Contingent 2 sustains fire on the marked Hydras and Seeker Missiles destroy two of the Imperial Tanks, breaking the remaining one.

The Shadowsword Company doubles up the flank, just bringing the Armoured Cadre into sight and obliterates two of the Tau grav-tanks.

Someone forgot to properly calibrate the IFF systems on the Barracudas and they fail to make a ground attack despite the Shas'O's encouragement that all the Gue'va tanks are all "Way over there!"

The Crisis Cadre bounds forward on a march and takes shelter in one of the ruined towers near the cathedral.

The Armoured Cadre marshals; moving forward cautiously and clearing all their blastmarkers.

Rallies: The Tau Pathfinders and Kroot fail to rally as do the Baneblades and the remaining Sentinel for the Steel Legion.

Turn 2

Strategy roll: Steel Legion (on a tie)

Artillery Battery 1 sustains fire on Stingray Contingent 1, destroying a Stingray and breaking the unit with the rain of missiles.

Artillery Battery 2 sustains fire on Pathfinder Contingent 1 and the nearby Kroot, blasting 2 Pathfinders, 2 Devilfish, and a single unit of Kroot into mash.

The Crisis Cadre advances on the Baneblades killing a Leman Russ and shattering the Hydra.

Despite one of the Baneblades being suppressed, the Superheavy Company sustains fire on the Crisis Cadre, crumpling the courageous Tau and their fighting suit? none survive.

The Hydra continues its advance, firing on the broken Kroot, killing one of them.

The Armoured Contingent advances, popping up to hammer the Baneblades, but their thick armour stops all but one hit getting through (-1DC).

The Shadowswords attempt to double to track the Hammerheads, but become confused and fearful of Tau that might be lurking nearby and only move slowly forward.

The Barracudas race in to fire on the Baneblades, easily skirting the range of the lone Hydra remaining, but their attacks are ineffective and they return to base.

Stingray Contigent 2 doubles up to mark the Baneblades and then fires Seeker Missiles that score another hit. (-1DC)

Rallies: Pathfinder Contingent 1 fails to rally as do all the Steel Legion formations!

Turn 3

Strategy roll: Steel Legion

The Baneblades attempt to acquire new targets, but jamming ruins their attempt and they regroup, removing all blast markers.

The Kroot think better of engaging the Baneblades, now that the Shas'O isn't bossing them around, and also regroup, removing all their blast markers.

The Shadowswords prepare to double into enemy territory but confusing commands hold them back, so they fire on Stingray Contingent 2 instead, blanking two of the grav-tanks and breaking the unit.

The remaining units of Pathfinder Contingent 2 try to double, fail, catch "The Fear", and break?

Artillery Battery 2 sustains fire on the Kroot, killing 1 and breaking the unit with blast markers.

Artillery Battery 1 sustains fire on the Hammerheads, inflicting no casualties, but laying 2 blast markers.

The Barracudas execute a ground attack on the lone Hydra, taking a blast marker, but destroying the tank.

Teetering on the edge, the Armoured Cadre attempts to marshal, but fails and breaks?

End of Turn: Steel Legion 1 (TSNP) vs Tau 1 (TSNP)

Rallies: The Kroot and Stingrays fail to rally for the Tau while the Steel Legion has nothing that needs to rally.

Turn 4

Strategy roll: Steel Legion

Artillery Battery 2 sustains fire on the Armoured Cadre, knocking out a Hammerhead and breaking the formation.

Artillery Battery 1 follows up with more of the same, wiping out the Armoured Cadre.

Pathfinder Contingent 1 doubles on the Baneblades, firing to no effect, but crossing over into enemy lines and marking the Superheavies, calling in the Barracudas?

?who fail to respond and stay grounded, much to the chagrin of the Tau.

Sensing the danger, the Baneblades advance on the nearby Pathfinders, wiping them out.

Pathfinder Contingent 2 prepares to march into enemy lines, but after seeing their comrades shredded decide to stay put and regroup instead.

The Shadowswords advance in a dispersed formation, securing their right flank objective? and failing to enter enemy territory by a *hair's width*? so they fire in frustration at the remaining Pathfinders, wiping out two of them and breaking the unit.

End of Turn: Steel Legion 3 (BTS, Defend the Flags, TSNP) vs Tau 1 (TSNP)

This is a formation I rarely fail to take, however I usually mix in a few Shadowswords.  4 Battle Cannon and 2 Volcano Cannon are murder at range.

Forgive the ignorance, but you mentioned that both units of Manticores did a Sustained Fire in all 3 turns. Was the IG player only firing with one or two of them per turn?

Yes, due to suppressing, unable to fire indirect, staggering shots, etc, the Guard player always had at least 1 Manticore able to fire per turn.

Often he'd only have a few units to target, so would only use 2 or 4 BP on them.

Jackwraith, its somewhat standard practice for IG players to fire 2/1/2 manticores per turn, giving 4/2/4 BP each turn. ?So, yes he will most likely have fired one or two each turn.

PS Very nice Batreps Chroma, thanks for sharing.

PPS Chroma, I can't believe you beat me to the punch with that answer again!  You have to stop doing that, its making me look dumb!  :p

Ah. Thanks. In the few games that I've played, I've been an all-or-nothing Manticore shooter. 6 BP is just so much more fun than 4...  :devil:

Great report Chroma, thanx for taking the time to write it up.

Q: Did the Tau player not know what he was facing? It seems like he really was left wanting against most of the IG formations.
