Just a quick question to those well versed in Tau background.

I was just wondering why the Orca can't carry Kroot troops?

Obviously the basic Kroot formation is too big to start off in an Orca. ?But what if the Kroot had lost a unit or two? ?Currently they can't board an Orca as they aren't listed on the transport capacity.

Do the Kroot have their own transports to get around and reach the battlefield or what?

Tau don't believe in "letting the dogs in the house."

Kroot don't ride in transports at all.

Tau do not consider Kroot equals.

Kroot are a sub race which help the Tau in exchange for certain civil liberties, peace and what not.

Kroot come from a neighboring rock to the home Tau planet. They are more anamalistic and predatory where the Tau are more sophisticated and shun fistacuffs and melee warefare.

Kroot eat their dead and mutate rapidly as their system digests and incorporates their prey's DNA into their own. The Master Shaper controls what the Kroot in his formation eat and serves as a DNA 'shaping' foremen. If he wants them to fly, they eat lots of birds. If he wants them tougher, they eat lots of orcs... etc.

The Tau despise that. They tolerate the Kroot way of life as the Kroot have a role in the Tau's pursuit for Greater Good.

The more kroot that run off into combat, the less Tau that have to enter h-t-h combat. That's Gooder'er for the Tau. :)

Tau don't believe in letting the stinky predators share housing, mingle with the she-tau, or cruize in their spiffy rides. Well, in established 40K core design fluff anyway.

Who's to say what 40K "Tau Empires" will bring... (next Codex due in March/April for those not quite up on the Tau core development)

...and for that matter, who's to say we can't re-invent the wheel. Afterall, the AX-1-0 is outfitted wth non standard weapory, is a bomber instead of fighter-bomber, already has weak armor - and its proposed to get weaker armor and more neutered weapons while the points go up.

Then there's that issue of the broadsides being LV's too... and single LV broadsides taking up as much space on an orca as a unit of crisis now... and heavy drones somehow being an upgrade of regular drones... and stealths visibile at all ranges... and the lack of sms on the devilfish in E:A...

I digress and am grumpy. Suffice it to say that anything's possible in E:A.

Cheers,

Time to recycle an old joke...

Do you know long it takes to get that Kroot smell out of a Devilfish? Even longer with an Orca.

Wow, Kroot being the victims of racist abuse. How wonderful  :80:

I don't see why they shouldn't be able to IMO. Not all Kroot travel in Warspheres, so there must be some other useful method of transporting them. In fact, I *really* don't see why not(Tactica's list is very much interpretation, most wildly different to how I see the Tau Empire).

Regards to my tongue in cheek response, if you want to know the truth.. see the 40K tau codex.

They describe the relationship between the tau and kroot well enough.

Tau 'tolerate' kroot and their 'ways' as the end justifies the means. That much is factual from our fiction we have for reference to our fantasy world.

Thanks for the responses gents.

Seems a bit odd that the Kroot have NO transport.  I dont mean that there should be one in the EA list, but that the background doesn't mention them at all.  Makes them a pretty useless military asset does it not?  If they have to walk to the battlefield.  Even in WWI they used trains.

There seem to be conflicting viewpoints on how "fussy" the Tau are regarding their erstwhile allies.  Clearly they don't approve of the Kroots' carnivorous behaviour.  But is that distaste so great that they really wouldn't let the Krrot hitch a ride in their fancy transports?

Are there different factions in the Tau Empire?  The "right wing" Tau with views like those Tactica expressed and the "left wing" Tau that are more like Xisor's viewpoint?

Or am I too worried about this and should just stick to throwing dice around!? :p

clausewitz,

Your view sounds about right. That is there are 'factions'. I imagine that the septs differ widely, with some septs being very integrated, yet others having a tough time. Should any friction arise, an Ethereal will surely dissapate it. Any 'racists' will probably get a swift 4 hour lecture on how they should be better and how the Tau'va will kick them in the face if they don't. Said racist will likely be brought over to this new way of thinking too. But, as with everything, it is the Ethereals that hold it together. They may not be indoctrinating them, but I think they need to keep the constant pressure so folks don't get lazy about things.

I always thought the Tau Empire would be a fantastic setting for an Inquisitor game spin-off. Called Ethereal. Many of the younger/more wanderlust filled Ethereals often eschew 'desk jobs' and take to getting their hands 'dirty' by forraging around the empire, fixing things from the front etc. An ethereal could basically be an Aun'la up to an Aun'vre with a little cadre of associates and things who have to go about fighting the insidious threats that oppose the Empire(genestealer cults for one!).

The trouble is, sometimes the Ethereals disagree on the best course of action...

As far as transport goes there are hounds, a mounted infantry of sorts. I guess that you could have carts too, more like feral ork transport or LATD than Tau transport.

Actually, it can't be denied that they also have the 'limited mobility' of the Kroot Knarloc and the Knarloc Riders. That said though, it's about as a mobile Rough Rider company(without transports).

Fluffwise, I really don't get why they won't be allowed in Orcas and Devilfish. They may not favour them for fightign from, but I don't see why not use them for other urgent purposes.(I can see a kindred that is redeployed to another city making the trip on foot rather than transport if it's the case that they aren't in a rush.

Not to burst anyone's bubble, I do believe in IA3 that Kroot are listed among those units that are allowed to be transported by an Orca.

I'll confirm that when I get home, but I'm pretty sure that is correct.

I think they used trains to get to the front, trucks to get to their sector, and they marched to get into their position in the line. See the excellent old silent classic All Quiet on the Western Front.

What you are essentially talking about is rear echelon transport versus transport on the battlefield (i.e. during the battle). The Kroots are not mech infantry, nor trained to jump from Orcas with jet packs, etc. They march into position and fight on foot.

They are no more useless than foot-slogging infantry have been throughout the centuries.

That would be a change from IA Update 2004, which does not include them in the list. (I am looking at the book right now.)

If IA3 changes that, then it sounds like you have a basis for changing the Epic version too.

Yes, that is exactly what I was talking about.  It seemed strange that they wouldn't use some form of rear echelon transport.

Honda, please post your findings on the Kroot/Orca question.

If Honda is correct and IA3 allows Kroot aboard the Orca what would be the reacting to adding this to the EA Tau list?
