Dobbsy and I were able to squeeze in a second game after going out for some delicious burgers at Jack Astor's. He wanted to change his army up a bit so we dropped the points value down a bit, changed up the battlefield and had another go! |

Turn 1 No teleports. Strategy Roll: Ulthw? The Bringers of Woe doubles forward, blasting at the Pathfinders hidden in the woods, eliminating one of their Devilfish. Not making the same mistake twice, the Shas'O and his Crisis suits co-ordinate fire with Da'Eldi'Ka, and they both double towards the advanced Falcons. ?Despite the nearby markerlights, their fire is unsteady, but they do manage to disable a Falcon and the single Firestorm, breaking the unit, which quickly moves away. With targeting and com equipment finally in working order, the Stingrays advance on the Rangers, releasing a swarm of virtual missile which register as kills on all their targets, wiping the Eyes from the trees! Beautiful Rain of Death also makes good, sustaining fire on the Railheads taking out two of them. The Wraithgate shimmers as, again, jetbikes race out of it. ?The Cloudchasers engage the Hammerheads of Da'Eldi'Ka, silhouetted on the top of a hill. ?One unit of each formation is eliminated, but the Eldar win the fight pushing back the grav-tanks and racing to another support position. Caught without targets, the Fire Warriors double forward into the cover of some ruined buildings. Despite some trouble with wonky servos, the Broadside Contingent manages to double forward and completely obliterate the broken Bringers of Woe. Not so quick this time, Quick Death advances on the Stingrays, popping up, but scoring no damaging hits. Da'Kaara'Yon decides to marshal, getting back into good order while moving forward. The Weavers of Destiny double towards the approaching Pathfinders, but are unable to do any damage to them. Still shaken by their earlier "destruction", the Hammerheads of Sha'is'Ka only manage to move forward without engaging any enemy targets. Racing down the flank, the Winterhawks double forward against the Stingrays, getting close enough to bring primary and secondary weapons to bear. ?Four of the missile gunships are taken out and the unit breaks, though they stand their ground. Mounting up, the Dreamslayers double forward towards the Fire Warriors, and their Wave Serpents fire, laying only a blastmarker. Remarkably, all units rally, though the Tau still have some blastmarkers lingering? |

Turn 2 No teleports. Strategy Roll: Ulthw? The Winterhawks advance, pouring fire into the Broadside Contingent, but only one of the mighty suits goes dark. Holding their ground the Warp Spiders of the Dreamslayers engage the entrenched Fire Warriors. ?The air hums with the discharge of high tech weaponry, but the Eldar prevail, though they lose two of their Aspect Warriors while the Tau lose four of their Warriors and withdraw. ?The remaining Aspect Warriors and their transports move forward to a supporting position for? The Stormrunners who dart out of the Wraithgate to engage the co-mingled Broadsides and remaining Stingrays. ?The Tau are wiped out at the cost of a single Jetbike. Realizing that discretion isn't getting them anywhere, Sha'is'Ka doubles on the Winterhawks, again taking out 1 Firestorm and 1 Falcon; the Eldar tanks break and move away. Eager to repeat their previous feats of marks'tau'ship, the Pathfinders fail to double towards the Warp Spiders and remain in the trees regrouping. The Fire Prisms of Quick Death advance, popping up to fire on the Ionheads, taking one out of the fray. A Beautiful Rain of Fire falls on the Pathfinders as those Fire Prisms advance, the the Tau are unhurt and mostly unfazed by the attack. Within easy reach of an objective, the Shas'O orders his Crisis team onto overwatch, pleased by the showing of his army. The Weavers of Destiny again move towards the Pathfinders, advancing and firing, and taking two of them out, breaking the unit. Flushed with their previous victory, the Cloudchasers chase a cloud all the way across the battlefield to grab the Tau Blitzkrieg. Dug in to the buildings near their own Blitzkrieg, Those Who Guide continue to survey the battle through their Seer Stones, setting their Guardians on overwatch. Remarkably, all units again rally! ?And you know the drill about who still has blastmarkers? |

Turn 3 The Farseer of the Weavers of Destiny again called forth the Avatar, positioning Its might near the Pathfinders and Sha'is'Ka. The Stealth Suits reveal themselves on the distant Eldar Side Objective 1, with no enemy in sight! Strategy Roll: Tau Startled by the presence of a giant screaming fiery creature, the Ionheads take some time marshalling, moving back to contest the Blitzkrieg with the Eldar Jetbikes. Also shaken by the howls of the Bloody-Handed God, the Pathfinders fail to marshal and attempt to move out of charge range. Still eager for blood the Exarch of the Dreamslayers engages the remaining Fire Warriors, eliminating three at no cost and pushing them back. ?The Warp Spiders then move to support their Jetbike riding companions. Hoping to clear the objectives, the Shas'O doubles his Crisis suits forward against the Weavers of Destiny, getting close enough to bring all weapon systems to bear. ?A Wraithguard, 2 Weapon Platforms, and 2 Guardians are lost and the warhost breaks, moving away from the onslaught. Seeing the danger of the Crisis suits, the Beautiful Rain of Fire advances, firing on them to no effect. Quick Death follows suit, taking out one of the agile groups of Crisis suits. With no enemies in sight and a strange sinking feeling, the Stealth suits go into overwatch. The rag-tag remnants of the Winterhawks double forward to fire on the contesting Sha'is'Ka Cadre, doing no damage, but putting themselves in position to support the inevitable attack by? The Cloudchasers engage the nearby Hammerheads and with an overwhelming amount of support nullify the Tau grav-tanks. The Protectors of Fate stick their heads out of the Wraithgate, wondering if they've missed the party, doubling towards the Stealth suits, but unable to quite make it into range. The Avatar rages in fury at the lack of nearby targets and abruptly disappears as the holo-projector is turned off. Those Who Guide remain in their protective ruins, satisfied with the outcome of the battle, even if their pupils had failed. ?The Master Seer contacts the Shas'O over their private channel, "You learn quickly Young Ones, but will you have time to learn all you need to survive?" End of turn: Tau 0 (none) vs Ulthw? 2 (Blitzkrieg, Take and Hold) |

Thanks Tactica! Well, my conclusion was that you really need to be aggressive with Tau, right out of the gate. ?Mix 50% Eldar and 50% Ork, and you've got the right mix of how you need to act. ?With, usually, awesome to hit rolls, Tau should never be afraid to double, especially if one can set up a co-ordinated crossfire situation! Despite these wins, my Eldar are still afraid of Tau (and so are my 'Nids, my Orks, and everything else! ?*laugh* ?75cm range is vicious...) As to waiting for Dobbsy's comments, that might be a while, he's here in Ontario until the 12th, so he might not have 'Net access until he's back in Australia. We're hoping to get at least one more Tau vs Eldar game in, but the next time I'll be using a Biel-Tan force. ?As both he and I feel the, appropriately placed, but inappropriatel unpaid for, Strategy Rating 5 for Ulthw? may be a bit of an issue that needs to be addressed by the Eldar Champions. ?That Ulthw?'s units, basically, cost the same as every other Craftworld's, but have SR5 instead of SR4 is a problem I've brought up before. ?I don't think it's a huge issue, more of a 5-10 point difference, but something I still think needs to be addressed. I look forward to facing the newest Tau list as well, with some semblance of BM management! ?*laugh* ?We all hate "Third Turn Wilt". |

Wow, sounds like I need to really rethink Tauctics from 40k to E:A. My usual reaction is 'Stand & Shoot' at 40k, but the extremely agressive 'Appleseed Assault' may work better here. Interesting. It'll be good to hear Dobbsy's thoughts, too. |

Hey Dobbsy! Glad to see you made it to the boards before you head back Down Under! I've put together a Biel-Tan force I hope you can take a spin at on Monday, give me a call tomorrow (Sunday) and let's see what we can arrange! |

This comment may be a little late to help Dobbsy, but I wonder if taking some AC might not help. The change will obviously generate a ripple effect if you were to play the Eldar again, in that they'd just take AA. However, if they are tying up units to protect their backfield, then they may not be able to put as many units into your side of the board, thus taking a little pressure off your frontline units. Just a thought. |

Infantry heavy Eldar forces ... well, all Ulthwe eldar forces can be a headache! In my experience, you have to be prepared to attempt to 'control' the Eldar. That is typically done by OW and large LOF blocking terrain. The eldar armor is very brittle and weak. 5+ typically on their tanks. Catching them to do the damage is usually quite tricker with their 35cm movement skimmers and hit and run along with full move post combat tactics!! I'll be the first to admit that I have a hell of a time dealing with eldar. They are hard... tough... damn hard actually to beat with Tau if the Eldar are played right. I do think you have to be willing to play aggressive, but not 'take the battle to the enemy aggressive. I think you have to pick out the superheavies first, then pick on him as necessary to isolate and destroy units to the last pointy eared man-elf-thing. I find the ion-cannon moray to be an essential element in dealing with Eldar... however, only if I can afford to drop it in via hero. Eldar have sooooo many shots that the thing doesn't last long. Kroot have actually made a suprisingly good impact in one of my games against the eldar. I lost the kroot, and the game, but they have some h-t-h promise if the enemy materializes through that warp gate onto your side of the field. A good counter rush for assault with the kroot when reinforced with some FW FF support behind them can be the trick to slowing down the possibilities of that warp gate. I think the art of pop-up and ow are two important tools when it comes to contending with the eldar. they are just so shooty - you cannot afford to get out in the open... they are very good at h-t-h compared to the tau and you can't afford to get up close and personal unless the enemy is isolated and the blow you deliver will be final and fatal. Don't know if any of that rambling helps or is even timely Dobbsy. I know your pain though - Eldar can be a tough nut for Tau to crack (in my experience). Cheers, |
