Hi, My girlfriend is having problems with her space marine force vs my Biel-Tan Eldar. I thought that perhaps she would have more luck with the Tau. She has considered other forces but the IG, Orks, Nids and Chaos are not really her cup of tea. As I don't really know much about the Tau (hey I'm old school so gimme a break;) I was hoping you guys could convince her on the army stats as well as assure her that working with an all resin army will not be as nightmarish as it sounds. thanks alot, Malakai |

Malakai, I don't want to burst your bubble, but Tau is probably NOT the best fit for your GF. First, the list is still in development. That means there's a risk of falling in love with a particular unit/formation, only to find out that its going to change in stats/context to which it may be used. That can be frustrating for some. Second, resin is a nightmare. I love the Tau, but I really prefer the plastic minis for the infantry. Broadsides, crisis, stealth, drones, fw, pf, etc... doesn't matter. The infantry are all very VERY brittle. One dice accident can really ruin a stand's day! (believe me - I speak from experience!) To play Tau, you really have to be a die hard fan of the list and not worry too much about the fragile nature or expense of the models. Third - the price of the models. OK, many do not have an extra 1K lieing around to buy all the models its going to take to get a flexible 5K point Tau army. One Orca costs 30 USD. The Manta is about 90 USD. You pay about 14 USD for 3 HH and you are going to need a lot of them. The dollars add up quick. The Tau are definitely not the cheapest army you are going to get into. Especially not when many other armies can be purchased already painted off of Ebay. Finally, Tau aren't done yet. Tau have some issues to be worked out such as BM Management. Not all units are 100% solidified yet either. Right now, there are some weaknesses that the enemy can exploit to really take advantage of the list. This is probably not what you want to hear, but Eldar are about the best 'chick' army I can think of!! They have all that decorative color, they are prestine and sing-songy voices (see recent Dawn Assault and Winter Assault games). They are very graceful and elegant race. They are also a completed list and a really strong list. Even if she doesn't play E:A as good as you, she'll definitely give you a run for your money with them - regardless of what you play. Also, the race has been around a long time and you can pick up many of the older versions of the models / armies off of ebay pretty cheap. Swordwind book is also available and easy to digest. If I were you, I'd steer her away from Tau and toward Eldar. Well... if you want her to stay happy and not spend a bunch of money anyway. Cheers, |

Or she could have a go at fielding the Kleistian Grenadiers... (Or Phaebian Guard, or Garrusite Dragoons - I haven't done colour schemes for those yet!) Ok, ok, sorry... Seriously, the Eldar are a fine list (and I am nuts about Biel-Tan, go figure) but I find them a bit too fragile to get much joy out of... but then I don't get a lot of experience with them. Gary |

I agree, the Infantry are fragile. I've already had a couple rifles turn into carbines. But the Tau are like crack. |

If you want to convince her to play Tau, get her some Crisis suits for Christmas - she will love the detail and the minis. I dont think that playing Tau is necessarily a bad choice, if she is aware of the issues of playing a playtesing force (but then, many forces are in the same situation). In fact, if she does end up with the Tau, she should register here and let us know what she thinks! The resin and price issues are there, and cannot be avoided... but since when has someone picked a force to play through logic? I guess what you want to hear is how they play. The Tau rely on combined arms and killer blows. They are a highly fluid force. If she likes the image of fliers swooping down to deliver troops or images of rows of large constructs blasting into the distance, then the Tau has it. If she wants to run in and start beating the enemy with a club, the Tau is probably not for her. ![]() |

Is resin that weak? Didn't know that, still have to get my first Forgeworld stuff somewhere in 20xx. ![]() Is it only the infantry? What about the tanks or even BFG stuff? Also weak compared to plastic & metal? Anyway, getting your girlfriend to play is extraordinary. I'm glad my wife likes the models and the way I paint them, but playing? |

F/W Resin though very detailed ... in many cases has significant flash on occassions, must be cleared/washed to get mold releaser film off or paint won't stick ! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

And oh BTW ... the resin dust is very toxic ... you must wear a painter's mask and goggles (avail. at hardware stores) if you are going to do a lot of filing/sanding. IMO ... resin is not the best way to do 6mm models ... pricey, hard to work with /paint, fragile, etc. ... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Resin is quite brittle. I have not had the 'casualty of the dice' problem, but I am getting very good at breaking the flight pole of Drones when getting rid of flash! |

Yeah, my Tau won't be a force that's carried around on the off chance I'll get a game. I've already had a Crisis suit snap at the ankles, so unless I have an arranged game they won't be travelling with me. Luckily I find the glue sets faster on resin. Part of the problem is the resin they use. It holds an amazing level of detail, but suffers in the durability department, unlike the "grey" resin that Battlefront uses in it's Flames of War vehicles. |

The detail and "survivability" of white metal ... works fine for me ! And if my "friend" was my "girlfriend" she wouldn't be interested in my silly toys and I wouldn't let her play with them anyway ... ![]() ![]() ![]() |
