Hi!


The thread I have up already is for discussing the Gue'sensgi's logistical requirements, but the Damocles Gue'vesa ended up taking over!

So, I am re-posting the existing posts here for continued debate on the gue'vesa.


Personally, I don't see the Gue'vesa being involved in combat drops or being flown around in Mantas.  I get the feeling that they are set up to carry vehicles based on the Devilfish chassis rather than having a 'big box' cargo hold.  Actually, I guess Mantas might be used as troop carriers for the Gue'vesa but I suspect that they would be prioritised for supporting Tau forces.

I see the the Gue'vesa more as planetary garrison troops and used in offensive operations as either extra numbers for defence of areas already taken or occasionally to mount a head on assault if required, something the Tau are not really suited for.  Thinking about it as I type they would also seem ideal to act as an 'anvil' for the more mobile and harder hitting Tau 'hammer'.

Well, that's my view for what it's worth.

There's a fluff mention of an Imperial ship (and crew) being 'adopted' by the Tau, I think it's in the basic Codex.

IA3's stats for the Orca and Manta do allow for them to carry Kroot, so I'd assume that eventually Gue've'sa would be carried by Tau hardware (note:  the only gue've'sa in IA3 were local garrison troops), but not if they were being fielded as a 'separate army' like the Kroot Mercs.


The rear echelon transports used by Tau forces to ferry supplies and Gue'vesa and non-combat caste members are not likely to be built around the Devilfish. The Devilfish is an expensive combat grav vehicle, which is likely to consume huge amounts of fuel and require intensive maintenance. RL mechanized troops fight with tracked vehicles, but the tracked vehicles are expensive fuel-hogs and break down fast. The heavy lifting and strategic movement is done with ships and trucks and by rail, with a small amount of aircraft thrown in for special purposes.

The Tau are likely to have the equivalents of trucks and civilian aircraft, if they don't have railways and (wet) ships. Even if the basic Tau "truck" associated with combat operations is gravitic, it's not likely to be comparable to the Devilfish. As the Gue'vesa we see in Epic don't fight with vehicles, they are likely transported by these "trucks".

In the same fashion, it seems likely that there are civilian-Orcas, civilian Manta-class craft and something even larger for special purposes.

How are mining operations etc. done in the 41st millennium? Almost all of the major races construct huge starships which can't enter planetary atmospheres. These ships are made of some "stuff". How does the stuff generally get transported to orbit? How does the Imperium do it? How do the Tau do it?

Sorry, re-reading the quote of my post I didn't make my point very well.  What I meant was that the Manta is built round transporting vehicles based on the DF hull.

I agree with your post and in fact the Prianah (or is it Tetra, or both?) are based on civilian vehicles.

I think one of the 'lower hull' type Merchants would make an ideal ship to be 'seconded' to a Gue'vesa world as a ship. Many of them in fact. I doubt Heroes, Explorers, Merchants, Protectors etc would be used, but I certainly envisage at least a semblence of a 'human hand in the pot' when it comes to defending their world.

Merchants + Orcas seem ideal things.

Perhaps try convering an IN Station into a Tau-ed Station?

I always pictured Gue'Vesa being the local population acting as militia.  Trading plows in for Lasguns.  I figured that the Tau would only "ship" them as combat troops if they were totally overstretching their Firewarriors.  The fluff also indicates that the Human's are allowed to only make the basic lasgun and flak armour as weapons, but are not restricted in anyway in pursuing non military activities: farming, research, art, raising families, living peaceful lives in their settlements.

Granted now things have changed quite a bit since the Democles Crusade, and they are much more integrated into Tau society I would guess.  I still don't know how often they would use Gue'Vesa in an offensive role.  They are deemed heretics by the Empire, and would be killed on site with extreme prejudice by anyone faithful to the Emperor.  I could even see special hit-and-run Exterminata strikes by Inquisitor fleets, and Space Marines using vortex torpedos to burn whole worlds in cleansing fire, specifically to destroy these Heretic settlements, even at the cost of losing the small raiding fleet.  It would be a most "honourable" death for those who attempted such a cleanse, and be very distressing to the Tau.

 I think the Tau would treat them much like the Niccisar, and prevent their contact with the Empirium of man as much as possible, going so far as to evacuate the women and children of such planets, and only leaving fighting men to garrison important points if a Human settlement was attacked, at least as far as battles with the Imperium.  Against the other races, who knows.

On the contrary, the precarious position of the Imperium in the Eastern Fringe - acknowledged as such in the Taros Campaign book - and the admission has been made that most of the humans in the Tau Empire had 'turned their back on the Emperor'.

Note that the only Imperial force able to oppose the Tau in force in the Third Sphere Expansion is the Black Templars-Raven Guard crusade on Nimbosa, as they aren't, for the most part, reliant on the Navy or on local Governors for logistal support (and are too independent from the Senatorum's authority - and too caught up with their myopic honour codes - to go to somewhere like Armageddon or Cadia, where they would do a far more worthwhile service to their corpse)
