Research Facility Destroyed

logged by

Enclave News Service

(ENS) Yesterday, Enclave University officials reported extensive damage to the
Bio-Mechanics Wing located at Facility RV307.

Although the Enclave Judicial Corps has yet to provide full disclosure of the details,
several citizens reported extreme bioform infestations at their homesteads, which
precipitated several local evacuations until a sufficient number of Bio-Pacification
assets were marshalled.

Although the evacuations were described as orderly, it was clear from pictures taken
during overflights by ENS vid-drones, that some loss of transportation resulted as
evidence of abandoned hovercarts all along Enclave Route 45.

The Pacification officers are still investigating reports that students at the university
are responsible for triggering this event with an unauthorized experimental procedure
using charged particle saturation of core genetic blocks, resulting in rapid mutation of the target genomes.

The Enclave property damage estimate is expected to exceed 9,562 Billion creds.

This is B'll O'Rei'Li reporting for F'x N'Uze

------------------------------------------------

So Gar and I gathered for a 2700 point battle between his bugs and my Tau.

I fielded:

Fal'shia Commerce Safety Unit (v4.2.7)
-------------------------------

1 x Armored Cadre w/Hammerhead upgrade (8 RG-HH)
1 x Armored Cadre w/Hammerhead upgrade (6 IC-HH)
1 x Scorpionfish contingent w/Dragonfish upgrade (2 vehicles)
1 x Fire Warrior Cadre+ 4 x Devilfish
1 x Stingray contingent, w/Stingray upgrade (6 vehicles)
1 x Moray contingent (2 Morays with RC)
1 x Markerlight Sentry turrets (6 x turrets)

Bio-Expeditionary Force (BEF) (List from SG's site):

3 x Hierophants (DC 6) aka Really Big Bugs (RBB)
1 x Genestealer brood (6 units)
1 x Dominatrix (DC 8) aka Big Brood Alpha (BBA)
?attached brood -> 3 x Carnifex, 2 x Haruspex, 10 x Termagants/Hormagaunts
1 x Hive Tyrant aka Big Brood Beta (BBB)
?attached brood -> 3 x Carnifex, 2 x Haruspex, 12-15 x Termagants/Hormagaunts

Some of you are probably wondering why he picked the SG list vs a newer playtest version
and all he had to say is that he was up till 2.30 am of game day and it mades sense at
the time. It didn't really matter to me which he picked as I was pretty ignorant of all
the bug lists.

I had my FW cadre set up on my baseline, centered on my Scorpionfish and Stingrays, flanked
on the right by the IC-HH, then the RG-HH. On my left were the Morays, then the FW cadre.

Facing me, on my right were all three big bugs, Beta brood to the left, flanked by Alpha
brood, and finally, the Genestealers were to my extreme left.

So my first thought was...I need bigger guns. I really wasn't sure how I was going to deal
with a serious push by the Bio-titans and keep all those other nasties off of my freshly
washed tanks.

As we say in Texas, I figured I was in for a real learnin'.

Image 1

Turn 1:

The bugs got to go first, but botched one activation for a Bio-titan and just to show
Gar that I was empathizing with his roll, I messed up my Moray activation. However as
we noticed that the bugs don't get blast markers, failing orders never seemed like that
big a deal.

Bugs on the move

Eventually the RBB's got untracked and started closing on my right. I shot at him all
the way and figuring I really needed to take units out, I focused on the RBB known as
Big Green. I mostly annoyed him, though did take him down a couple hits. However, this
took my entire army (sans the Morays), so that was a little troubling.

Turn 2:

Morays get their act together an slowly glide over to my right and unload on Big Green. I
think I got one dink on him.

Image 2

The Scorpionfish add their fire and I take him down a few more points and the IC-HH
add to the carnage and eventually kill him.

Image 3

Image 4

And there was much rejoicing except for the fact that I had spent my entire first two
turns firing at one bug with my entire army. Not a good deal and I realized that I was
going to have to shift my strategy a little otherwise, I was going to spend all my time
trying to kill the RBB's, and get wiped out by the rest.

Turn 3:

So, new beginnings. By now Alpha was getting too close to my baseline and I had to
start dealing with it. So I jumped the Stingrays behind them and start shooting. Small
bugs get blown to pieces and I think a bruised one of the Carnifex. The Scorpionfish
sustain and deal some more damage. Small bugs are dropping like flies, Carnifex and
Haruspex are taking hits. I'm not doing squat against the Dominatrix.

The Morays line up against another RBB. This one is getting close. In fact it already
is as it turns its bad breath against my IC-HH and causes them to faint. The the other
RBB zooms up and lets loose with bad breath. The IC-HH break and zoom way out to my right.

The RG-HH's sustain on Beta and deliver some pretty good hits, taking out the Hive
Tyrant (gotta love 8 RG's on sustain).

The Genestealers start moving like the wind and close with my FW cadre, but are unable
to do much as the really soft parts are buttoned up inside their Devilfish.

So, I'm starting to do damage, but it's looking woefully inadequate compared to what
is still on the board.

We checked victory conditions and then moved onto Turn 4.

Turn 4:

I really need to see some good things happen this turn or I'm going to be in trouble. As
it stands, it really looks like the bugs are going to consume everything on the board.

So, the bugs get the initiative and go first. One of the RBB's jumps on a Scorpionfish and
bites one of the fenders.

Image 5

However, very little damage is done (I take a couple of hits)
and we part company.

I continue to pour fire into Alpha with the Stingrays and Morays and kill off all the
bugs except for the Dominatrix who stands unscathed and unbowed.

I attempt to pull the Epic version of the 40K Tau tactic (Fish of Fury) and kill a few
Genestealers, but not enough. In hindsight, I shouldn't have deployed the FW's as they
were now quite vulnerable. The Genestealers casually licked their talons before launching
an assault and tearing the FW's to pieces. We break and scoot over to the Tyranid objectives
to support the Stingrays.

My last shot is a doosy. The RG-HH kill off the rest of the bug tanks in Beta, then switch
to AP fire and really rip up Beta. Unfortunately, there still remains about ten units who
are able to stretch themselves between two objectives.

I attempt to rally and get the IC-HH's back, but the FW's stay broken.

We tally up the objectives and we each have 1. We then go to points and we both scored
300 each, so a very hard fought draw.

After Action Report
-------------------

Well, that was a blast. All in all, I'd say the fortunes of war were fairly even, so no
unbalancing dice to skew the result. I would say that it was extremely difficult to beat
up on the RBB's and they had me concerned all game long.

Everything on my side seemed to click together well, though I did misplay a couple of units
like my FW Cadre and the IC-HH cadre. In the former, I should have gone for an objective
grab and in the latter, I really should have moved them farther back, but I misjudged the
movement on the RBB's and got the "Breath of Death".

Gar is going to pull down the latest Epicomms list and we'll get a rematch in before too
long...however, Shawn, our Ork player is interested in tearing me into little pieces. So
far, most people are commenting as being impressed with the level of mobility that
the Tau are capable of as well as the "interesting" blend of weapons (i.e. "those look like
they're gonna hurt").

Great game Gar!

A fun report!  I look forward to seeing a rematch against a more recent Tyranid list.  The Tau are 50/50 against 'Nids in my play group.

Well, thank you Icon!

As far as the scheme goes, I wanted something easily repeatable across all platforms and to depict a low visibility palette.

I'm still looking at them to see if it works the way I want.

To separate the Fire caste from the Air caste units, I went with GW Scaly Green mixed with Space Wolf Grey.

I'm attracted to the faded greys enough that I'm considering stripping my 40K vehicles and redoing them.

Honda,

I love the pics and you did a marvelous job on the bat rep. Glad to see that v4.2.7 is getting some playtest.

Thanks for posting the batrep - and I'd really like to see the tau models closer - I'm sure there out there, just going to have to look at all the images.

Right now, getting sleepy and replied to several posts already. I'm going to give this a proper read and reply. I really like the look of the report - want to give it proper time and reply.

Cheers for the report Sir!! (now to read carefully - look for reply tomorrow probably)
