I have always left my skimmer vehicles (Eldar and Tau) base-less, but seeing some of the Hammerheads and Devilfish with both flying and square bases has made me reconsider. But, how are these assembled? I would guess that you cut down the stem, drill a fitting hole in the underside of the Tau vehicle, and glue it in. I also base coat things like this (eg BFG vessels) in black before glueing them in, to stop the join being white and obvious.

So, any tips or instructions for this? Thanks.

I model first - including stem and base, and sand flock, then prime and paint. This is followed by sealing. Finally, static grass flock is sparsely added.

Regarding pinning - you can use flying stands or brass dowel's from your local hobby supply store.

Pin-vice drill into the stand and into the bottom of the model allows for orientation of hole.

The base also affords you something to hold on to while painting. :)

I paint the mini, flock and paint the base then add static grass. If it's plastic on plastic I'm lazy and just plastic-glue the model to the cut down stem after I've painted it. I use Revell plastic glue and it holds like steel :D Well so far anyway :D If it's metal on plastic I might pin it if it's a heavy mini otherwise it's just superglued. It all depends on the tightness of the join basically.

That is interesting, in that I tend to go half way between each of you. With my Gothic ships, as I have said, I simply base coat, glue to the base and then continue with the painting.

I am still undecided on basing my Tau vehicles, but it does give me something to think about. Thanks.

For what its worth, I use fantasy bases.

They work fine and look good on the field.

However, after seeing Dobbsy's bases - I like his sooo much better.

I don't know what Dobbsy is using for his bases - but... would be interested in finding out. :)

Basically, your average GW flying stand - just lop the stems a bit and make sure they're flat on top

I use the following bases to mount my vehicles (and I mount all of them)

1. HH Chassis: Standard 40K round infantry base. I elevate mine by clipping straight pieces from paperclips, drill into base, drill into vehicle, glue, and finally prime.

2. WE: I used Emissary's for my Morays and I put them on the GW 60mm round base. I kept the post clear on these. I use the same base size for my Scorpionfish/Orca/Dragonfish.

For what it is worth, I think basing the Tau vehicles and showing them elevated off the ground really helps them stand out. If you're into the visual aspect of the game (and I am), this really makes your army shine.

My two yen...

Honda, asthetics are 50% of the game if you ask me!

Dobbsy, those are normal GW flying rounds? Wow, I thought they looked a bit smaller than that actually.

Heh, well thanks for the tip!
