Hi!

One thing that has been a part of the BFG Tau development from the beginning has been the use of Tau names for each class of starship (Lar'shi for Hero, Or'es El'leath for Custodian etc) and has been a handy way for getting around the confusion of two units with the Orca name - the Orca escort is Kass'l in Tau.

Now, the idea has arisen (in my head) for using Orca dropships and Morays as part of a rule for the Qath'fannor, and the guys are a bit hesitant to refer to the Orca using its English name, to avoid confusion between the dropship and the escort (maybe not that handy a way of avoiding it!)

So, in order to square that circle - and add some flavour to the Epic list - how about working out some Tau names for the Epic AVs and WEs?

At least for the ones you don't see in the Tau Codex (Mantas, Morays, Stingrays etc)

A few suggestions (Guess which language I... acquired and modified them from!):

EDIT: Added White Shark name to the fold!

EDIT 2: Modified Moray's name a bit...

Fire Warrior = Shas'senshi (since the shas'ui is a Fire Warrior too! An equivalent to Gue'senshi for my Grenadiers, a means of referring to Shas warriors without recourse to rank)
Pathfinder = Shas'kusa'wake
Tetra = Shas'mono'mi
Piranha = Shas'ken'mi
XV15 = Shas'myen
XV8 suit = Shas'kik'yoku
XV88 = Shas'gen'hou
Devilfish = Shas'umi'kei
Hammerhead = Shas'mo'ku'zame
Swordfish = Shas'ka'jiki
Skyray = Shas'kor'ei
Stingray = Shas'aka'ei
Narwhal = Shas'ka'ku
Dragonfish (which we could call Dragonet, too) = Shas'ryu'o
Kroot = Ryou'shi'vesa (vesa for Kroot serving in the Empire's forces, ranked la to o equating to Kroot tribal rank)
Barracuda = Kor'ka'masu
Tiger Shark = Kor'tora'zame
White Shark = Kor'zuro'zame
Orca = Kor'shas'shi
Moray = Kor'utsu'bo
Manta =  Kor'shas'ma'kei

Thoughts?

First impressions Nerroth is that there are far too many "shas" & "kor" words involved. BUt good effort on putting names to them

Keeping the list based on Imperial designations is still the way to go IMO as there's no confusion as to what is what when you mention it in-game. I know I would get confused :D

I kinda agree with dobbs... I can never remember the Gue've'sa or whatever.

Its taken me since day one to remember shas'o and shas'ui... shas'la and Shas'el.

The stuff you through out there... lol, well, I'd never remember all that. I kinda like "Dragonfish" anyway.

Sorry Nerroth. I think conceptually the fluff idea is cool, but for the simple minded folks like me... i like saying "Hero."

:(

Sorry.

Good effort Nerroth,

However since people have difficulties with Tau language (I do :D ), it's maybe better not to replace the names, just add in the fluff for fun.

Guys, when I referred to the example of BFG, there are Tau and English names for each ship, so you can use whichever name you feel more comfortable with (I like using the Tau names - Lar'shi, Or'es El'leath, for example - but others stick with the English ones - Hero, Custodian - so everyone's happy!)

In the Kor'vattra, there are common parts of each name depending on the class of vessel ('leath for battleships, Lar'shi for heavy cruisers, Il' for support cruisers and Kir' for Warp dive-capable escorts) so I figured that th units and vehicles which were operated by the Fire Caste would have Shas' in their name, with Kor' in the names for the Air Caste formations.

Also note that for transport craft, such as the Orca, both Kor and Shas are used, to show the Kor bringing the Shas to victory (Kor'shas'shi)while the Skyray strikes at airborne targets from the ground (Shas'kor'ei)

And a cookie for figuring out the Japanese connection!

Make sense?

I really like the list that you have presented, but I also feel that we should keep with the 'English' names as the primary source. Learning any language is a two stage process - learning the words and then their meaning. Using the English names eliminates the problem of learning the words.

That said, this type of thing really adds to the feel and background of a list, which is very important. I also like the logic of the names. Well done.

I think I've got the Japanese connection:

Shas'ken'mi and Shas'ryu'o

Ken and Ryu are the two main characters from Street Fighter which is a Japanese game.

Do I get my cookie now? :p

You mean, of course, Street Fighter II :p

The cookie was for Vanvlak for spotting the -zame reference!

(And the SF2 reference hadn't occured to me, but you guys can have cookies too!)

So CS, could you put the Tau name in the unit title (look at the Hero and Custodian for examples of what I mean) and we can stick with the Imperial designation for developing the list?

Gary,

How do you see this being presented for a given unit:

Example:
[quote]
FIRE WARRIOR (SHAS'SENSHI) TEAM
[quote]

Note: Taking lead from the Swordwind suppliment, I've taken "TAU" off of the front of "FIRE WARRIOR" as its redundant to say "TAU" for every one of our units and makes it harder to find each one in the list.

We learned after the first rule book how annoying it can be to go to Imperial Guard Forces and then read "Imperial Guard" before every unit.

Glad we got wise with Swordwind (well mostly anyway, the orcs still somehow got 50% of the units listed without saying ORC each time - LOL!

Cheers,

Looks good to me!

Although having the Tau name first (as it is for the spacecraft) seems fine too - as one can easily stick with the Imperial designation that way as well!

@Nerroth,

I thought about that... but when scanning the list, it becomes a bit of a headache to look for the Tau name... if you don't speak Tau. ?:p

Not to mention, the actual army list uses the English Names... I'd get really irritated if I was having to buy shas'x and I meant shas'y and kept having to go back and fourth in the list to figure out what the heck it was that I was buying.

In the end, I think the low-gothic or English names are better if listed first, the Tau names should be there as it really adds flavor, but it works much better if it comes in the parenthesis IMHO since the army list itself is based upon English names.

I don't want to force people to learn Tau just to use the list.

SO we can get a feel for what it looks like, I'll update the WIP list with the names just to see how it looks. :p

Cheers,

Cool, looking forward to seeing it!

(And we can always say they are from such-and-such a dialect of Tau if the Studio have a problem with the names!)
