So I played a game of 3000 points against Eldar on Sunday, and got my ass handed to me.  I took too many flyers, 2 squads of Barracudas, and 2 Tiger Shark AX-1-0, so didn't have a lot of Infantry.  That;s what I get for trying something a little different.

That combined with piss poor rolling...

In one round, I failed 4 activations with rolls of 1, in a row.  So he advanced and whittled my troops with blast markers, next thing I know, more than half my units are in route, I'm down a Barracuda Squadron, and an Armoured Mobile Hunter cadre.

On the plus side my opponent has a few Epic Tau pieces, that he'll be selling me, so I will soon have my Manta.

Did you take any pictures?  What did the Eldar have?

I didn't take any pictures unfortunately, my Camera is down for the count.

From memory he took:

Wraithgate
Avatar
pair of Revenants
two Scorpions transporting Guardians or Aspects
Some Guardians with Wraithlords
some Nightspinners, Falcons

He ran mostly Infantry which was a huge problem for me, as were those template weapons.  From memory again, I took:

2x AMHC
Battlesuit Cadre w/ Shas'O and +2 Crisis stands
Battlesuit Cadre w/ Shas'el

Broadsides
Stealthsuits

2 Barracuda Squadrons
2 TS AX-1-0

I've found Eldar to usually be a pretty tough opponent for Tau... since they both have a lot of the same strengths, Eldar are less armoured, but, generally, faster.

Glad you had fun!

Yeah, that's the first time I've faced Eldar with my Tau, though I had previously faced off against them with my Guard.

The biggest problem in the game was my dice fighting against me.  He dropped templates on my Broadsides and Stealthsuits, which pretty much set them running.  Then it was downhill from there when I lost a Barracuda Squadron to AA fire on my turn, and then my Hammerhead squadron on his third activation.  Not rallying anything in the end phase, left me with 4 activations out of nine for the next round.  We played a couple more activations before the writing on the wall was clear.

I'm already planning out my revenge force, and am looking forward to trying out a Manta for the first time.

Would be great to see a battle report!  Even if you can't take pics, a play-by-play would be cool.

Try this to make reporting battles easier:

Will do.  I should be getting in another game in a week or two.  A couple of our young regulars are interested in Epic so I will be running them through a game next weekend, probably a pair of 1500 point armies.

The dice gods are fickle. Bad luck on those. not much you can do when the luck runs against you.

What infantry did he take? Other than the Guardians....

I found when I played Chroma that Eldar infantry/bike assaults are the most dangerous aspect (no pun) when using Tau. Make sure you make an effort to reduce/remove your opponent's assault forces early and don't be afraid to Co-ordinate fire either.

I'd probably take out 1 of the AX1-0 and a Barracuda wing. Put those points into some Stingrays for long-range anti-personnel fire vs his infantry and some more ground units. Killing transports can really slow Eldar down too. AMHC should do this if at all possible.

Mechanised Firewarriors are nothing to sneeze at either. Good AP fire.

Be careful with the Manta as his scorpions and revenants will eat it for breakfast if they all bring their weapons to bear. Might be good to use as a stand off unit though for taking those same units out with a 90cm range. Choosing a corner table set up will help with this.

I don't recall which other infantry he had, as all I recall was the two units coming in, one through the Wraith Gate and the other disembarking from the Scorpion I believe.  None of his other infantry even made it onto the table.

I usually take a unit of Firewarriors, but thought I'd try something different, going with air control.  Next time I'll likely go with something more solid.

Guardians are always a good 'first target'.  By taking them out you remove easy activations, they have no armor so they'll die faster, and the Farseer is responsible for summoning the Avatar and getting a third activation.  Balance that against what is going on with the enemy advance and you'll be fine.

Am I missing something?  Since when can Scorpions transport?

Means Storm Serpents perhaps?

Yeah, I think it was the Storm Serpent now that I take a look through the book.I just new for sure it ws a Super Heavy.  It may have been 1 Scorpion or Cobra and the Storm Serpent.  But there were 2 Super heavies.
