Hi, I'd like to share a possible alternative to the current Tau Jet Packs rule. Here's a first draft:

Many Tau battlesuits and drones make use of powerful and sophisticated jump packs. These allow them to pounce on the enemy and strafe them before retreating again out of range of the survivors? retribution. This makes jet pack equipped troops hard to counter and very difficult to engage.
Tau Jet Packs follow all the rules for Jump Packs.
Additionally, units with Tau Jet Packs having completed an Advance, Double, Sustain Fire, Marshall, Overwatch or Hold ?action may make an additional move up to 10cm in any direction.

Expected benefits are the following:
- no more weird intermingling situations
- no more air assault exception
- similar avoid CC effect.
- added avoid shooting effect: 10cm move may allow to reduce shooting at a crisis formation.

Like it or not?

I think I prefer it to the current situation. Possibly.

I can definately see some benefits with this change. But it will remove th sense of uncertainty from my oponents. As they wont have to worry about how I will use the Jet Pack rule if they want to assault my formations.

That's a good mix of opinions we have here...

E&C, could you detail a bit what you're most happy with? Is it the fact there is less complicated situations, or it it the addidional avoid shooting effect?

Jstr, you seem having the most mixed opinion. Would you be interested in testing that sort of rule, or do you see it just not very worth?

Hena, well I admit the current rule is more dynamic. But more Tauish I don't know. I think the rule as now is a bit too much focused on engagements. I would prefer a more multi purpose repositionning ability.

It's definitely simpler.  It's definitely much more like the 40K tau rules.

I just don't know if I like it.  On-ground moves in Epic are supposed to be substantial repositioning.  The "hop in and out of cover" effect that the background describes and the 40K stats mimic wouldn't show up on an Epic battlefield.

I'm also hesitant about going from 0 move to 10cm move on OW and Sustain.  That may not seem like it at first glance, but it is quite powerful.  Those that recall playing E40K will no doubt remember that Sustain Fire (or whatever the E40K equivalent was called), with just a 5cm move was an extremely effective and popular action.

Another much simpler option would be to give them the ability to force FF like Skimmers.  I'm not sure I like that either, but if we're spitballing jet pack ideas I figure it should be out there.

I agree with NH on the Sustain side of it. Sustained fire is a deliberate laying down of a lot of firepower (over time)on a target, not just a quick ambush/shooting attack. Being able to hop away into cover doesn't feel right with it.

OW, on the other hand, I'm ok with as I could see it as the 'suits covering an arc then firing at a target of opportunity then hopping out of sight - much like an ambush - which IMO feels right for the battlesuits tactical operating proceedure.

This rule tweak seems similar to the Eldar Hit and Run rule but in not so many words. I would trial it with maybe the Sustain adjustment to the proposed rule.

It makes them a lot harder to Close-Combat.

You can still Engage them if you're quick enough.

E&C, that is why IMHO it is the primary job of Morays and HH's to rid the enemy of their transport vehicles.

Hi Neal. Well the hop is only 10 cm which is precisely what the current rule allows.

Which actions to keep is another problem.

Sustain fire for example does not seem that big a deal. Having to shoot before hoping 10cm is very limiting, meaning it won't be very useful unless the ennemy comes very very close. I'd have to look at it...

Another much simpler option would be to give them the ability to force FF like Skimmers Not like this one much. Just imagine how nasty an all skimming battlesuit & tank army would be against CC armies.
