CybershadowThe option that I am favouring currently is making the increased initiative a part of the Tau Supreme Commander special rule. |
I don't like this much: adding an initiative bonus to a Shas'o which already gives an initiative reroll sounds like overkill and will make taking this guy a no brainer.
Initiative seem a bit equivelent to Leadership in GW core games, and represent the ability a formation has to execute the orders they are given swiftly and correctly whatever the odds, and I don't think that a lonely character could help much with that due to the scale if he is surrounded by dumb and dumbers.
However, I like the way you added it to the Battlesuit Cadre very much. Initiative 1+ adequately represents Crisis pilots as Tau hardened elites.
Please don't roll back on this for this the most beautiful change to the Tau list these days.

You miss-understand. I was not considering taking the initiative away from the Crisis Cadre. I like it and it stays. Currently, I am happy with the initiative values across the list and dont plan on any changes right now.

Init 1+ impacts a generally Init 2+ list in a host of ways.
1) unit does what its supposed to more often (vs. hold) 2) unit rallies from broken status more often 3) unit removes blast markers at end of turn more often 4) unit affords the tau player more opportunity to retain init
From Tau core concepts, 1) bonded, 2) Elite and 3) commanding units would have this luxury in principle.
Therefore, (removing bonded from the equation) there's a an argument in principle to be made for 1+ init in E:A on the following units:
1. Crisis 2. Stealths
... and on the following commanding individuals which can lead, guide, and inspire more than one Tau army in core concept design...
1. Shas'el 2. Ethereals 3. SC (Shas'O, Dragonfish)
Tau E:A game balance is another discussion entirely.
It sounds like CS has made a stance on this issue. I'm personally fine with the decision. It might make me think harder about taking a dragonfish if my scorpionfish contingent becomes 1+ init. Right now, I think the scorpionfish is too costly for my needs. I can't justify 200 points each in my lists. I know others are making use of them.
On the other hand, like Heckler, I think there is a very large case to be made for stealth suit units to have 1+ Init in E:A and hope we will be open to that discussion in the future if playtesting deems it to be worthwhile in v4.3.3.
Cheers,
