After my own little investigation I found no one uses the FW list because of all the obvious game breaking flaws! Manta......... need I say more.

The Manta as 'speed Bomber' is a typo. It should be 'speed 20cm'.

I think the Speed bomb is a copy and paste error. They simply copied the Tiger Sharks profile and forgot to change the speed.

I use the FW list as I think its more fun. Its a more engagement based list with Fire Warriors as easily the best choice. It can be a bit of a popcorn horde though. Especially if you mini-max drone formations. But the SG list is just as open to that abuse.

That sounds a bit counter to the design in the SG list. What is the differnce in play Jstr? Why are the FW easily the best choice? I'm curious. Is your recommendation to scrap the current design of "weaker in engagement" for the Tau SG list?
Cheers.

Yes I think the Tau should be more FF based. The Tau in 40kid are brutal at ranges of 15-18 inches which is pretty much FF range. They tend not to have a great deal of medium range but lots of long range fire power. FW's are pretty much space marines essentially BS 4 worse armour but a better gun.

The FW stats are not much different. They have the 15cm AP5+ disrupt shot which gives them a bit more protection against assaults but not much more. The difference is in the ethereal which has inspiring. This of course makes them much better in assaults than IG infantry. I talked to TRC last week about FW's and the conversation pretty much made me realise that FW's in the SG list are still an engagement based formation as in epic pretty much all infantry formations are. They are not really very good when you're trying to shoot with them but they can out perform IG in engagements dure to the 5+ AS. In the FW list a fearless unit with an inspiring leader dropping in a fearless support fire beast (Manta is FF 3+ and DC 9 in FW list) is an awesom combo. Add to this that FW's come in units of 6 for 150 pts makes them less of a burden points wise and in line with forge world pack sizes so a bit less of a burden on the wallet as well. It is also easy to make FW style units out of existing SG units. I have 16 bases of FW's so thats one airdropping unit of 10 and one mechanised unit of 6.

Crisis suits also take a substantial hit. They are LV's and drones are infantry units. So Suits can be sniped by AT fire. Markerlights are not an issue as the scorpionfish and stingray don't exist and the Morays are gone as well. They aren't missed as their roles are taken up quite well by aircraft and HH's who all get slightly better. This is why I say Fire warriors are the best choice in the list as indeed they should be.

CS - are you at all interested in changing Tau jet packs to plain old Hit and Run? I'm curious.

Ha! I wanted to see that abuse and what happened?

He pimped out his list in a way he'd never tried before and got stomped on.  :))

In my post I was talking about taking 9 independent drone formations for 675 points. Then you can take 4 crisis suit formations in 2 Orcas for 700. An Airdropping Matnta filled with FW's for 1150. And whatever else you want to fill out the rest of the list. Then simply out activte your opponent while keeping the units you care about off the table.

Something sould really be done about independent drone formations.

Not before I challenge CS to a game where he faces 12 formations of drones, 6 Orca and 6 other formations plus up to 300 points of other stuff (prob Tiger Shark Fighters)!

I really see drones (both types) as upgrades to other units - they shouldn't be available as a formation in their own right.

Question: have drones always been a separate formation?

So that 'drone-spam' formations is also possible in the FW list?

Forgive me these beginners questions, but I'm no Epic player but I have followed the Tau development discussions with great interest since the time JimmyGril was champion. I just love this race.

Back to the topic. This drone spamming is considered 'bad' by some, although it existed long before. Or did this problem occur because of other developments within the list (aka the synergy syndrom)?

What are the reasons it is still in the list, I think Cybershadow can answer that one best, and why haven't you people proven it well enough so no one could deny it?

From this thread it seems everyone agrees on it, yet, never it has been changed. I don't think Cybershadow is THAT stubborn.  :vD
