I’m having a hard time making this list work, how are people managing to get some punch out of it?
It’s a struggle to get activations , and what you get is to a degree pretty punchy, but fragile formations and low on AA, in short it has weakness, but I’ve been struggling to find its strength?
I love Tau and just want it to work XD

What was your list like?
I plan to try out a couple builds soon, but some of the challenges are pretty much baked in to the current list, eg the unit costs will mean lower activations, and the lack of tank formations to put Skyrays in probably makes AA harder to come by.
My approach will be to accept that this version is not as good as default Tau at range, and build for closer encounters.

It's expensive but I sometimes run FW on foot + 3 Broadsides + Skyray. 475 points so usually your BTS but it can garrison and deploy the Broadsides in a triangle with the Skyray in the middle so that with hit allocation the first AV hit or ideally 2 goes on the tougher Broadside first. Being LV the Broadsides can help with incoming fire for the FW too. I've used such a formation at tournaments and found it decent.

Also one of the other tournament players (and one of the top players) usually runs 3 x Fire Warriors formations in Devilfish with a Skyray added to each. Personally I most often add them to Hammerheads but there are definitely multiple viable options.

I'm a veteran of using the core Tau list so I'm looking forward to trying out the Viorla list (going to playtest the WIP Epic UK version sometime next month).

Viorla played Steel Legion game 1 and we ran out of time so called it end of turn 3 as a 1-1 draw. Didn't add up points but I think it would very likely have been a winning draw for SL.

Orca planetfalled 12 late turn 1. Sadly no enemy infantry close and I overconfidently combined assaulted 2 superheavies and 2 Manticores and my 12 Tau all died in the assault. Elsewhere both had a localised successes and we each had a possible path to winning late turn 3 that didn't work out.

Game 2 was vs someone trying Space Wolves for the first time with a donated army with limited choice and unusually he'd gone for a list with only 3 formations with any shooting and 4 Great Companies and other stuff all assault based. Seemed a iffy selection and a bad match up for him but I figured where marines got into close combat a lot of my formations would have been pretty easy to kill.

Viorla very luckily won the important turn 2 strat roll off and Pathfinders then 8 Crisis plus Drones sustaining with markerlights and crossfire wiped out a full 8 marine strong great company plus (the Crisis formation scored an impressive 15 AP hits and 5MW).

Wolves tried to get revenge by combined assault charging two half ish strength Great Companies with rhinos into the 4 Y'Vahra suits. I had over a dozen other units nearby to support mostly on FF4+ though and two more Great Companies got wiped out. We were low on time and things had gone so very poorly for them that the wolves conceded.

Tried to add photos but doesn't seem to let me sorry.

On paper I thought the Y'Vahra looked weak but they did good in these games. Neither opponent really exploited their weaknesses though. I've heard veteran players here suggest the Viorla army list is weak but I don't think they've giving them enough credit. I need more games with it but I think the Epic UK version of the army list seems decent overall to me - strong in some areas but with limitations and downsides. The Net-EA list seems 90-95% the same so not entirely applicable but mostly still relevent.

I still think the Pathfinder upgrade in the Net-EA list is horribly horribly broken and should be removed like we did in the Epic UK list though. You can Orca planetfall or ground attack with inbuilt markerlights safe in the middle of a big infantry block of FW. 8 Fire Warriors, 2 Pathfinders and 2 Gun Drones would be an unpleasant load out for any infantry nearby. Take 1-3 and that'll be brutal to face. Planetfall 3 by the enemy deployment zone turn 1 and they can sustained fire with loads of dice on mostly 2s to hit and with FF support for each other sometimes. At least in the Epic UK list the markerlight is in a different formation like Pathfinders/Stealths or formations with Skyrays that have to move up seperately and are easier to deal with.

No clue if you're even still active with the list but I wrote most of this out for elsewhere so most was just copy and pasted.
