My Landa crashing and burning didn't help.

Game 5
v MikeTs Orks
Big mob+8 battlewagons+2 flak
big mob
warband+nob+boy+grot
8 warbikes
8 skorchas+flak
blitz brigade 2 gun, 2 flak+ zzap
blitz brigade 2 gun, 2 flak+ zzap
big blitz 4 gun, 4 flak+ 2 soopa
3 fightas
3 fightas
landa

We had played the previous week and I'd clung onto a draw so I was determined to stick to the patient hunter concept and stay back on the first turn. I placed my 2 objectives pinned back as far as possible to limit the foot warbands impact if possible.
Mike deployed the big mob forward on an objective with the standard warband in the landa.
I deployed the foot FW at the back of a wood on OW on my blitz, the kroot in a building forward from an objective and the broadsides on OW in a wood behind the same objective. The mech FW+recon deployed behind cover either side of the blitz.

Orks went first and doubled forward a blitz brigade - broadsides OW them killing 2 and breaking them, they retreated into Mikes half. Barracudas went on CAP. Other BB doubled and killed a broadside. Kroot went on OW. Foot warbad doubled forward towards my blitz but were out of range of everything. Recon moved forward to ML them and were then strafed by the fightas who killed a tetra but failed to break them. Foot FW singled to front of wood an killed all the grots from the foot warband. The skorchas doubled forward and killed a couple of kroot the other recon moved forward to ML them. The mech warband then doubled forward and killed another kroot (but also came under ML). Bikes doubled forward to move within assault range of foot FW. Mech FW fired guided missiles at big warband but only killed 1 BW. big BB double forward and broke the recon that had been ML the foot warband. Other mech FW doubled and killed a couple of orks in the foot WB. Fightas went on CAP. Orcas+crisis landed by kroot in buildings and shot ML mech WB causing a handful more BM. Landa then came in to air assault crisis+orca+kroot coming under fire from orca, barracudas+skyray causing 2 points of damage and criticalling the landa. The other orca then came in the crisi jumped out and killed all but 1 of the bikes.

The loss of the landa had been a blow for the orks but the 2nd turn would decide the game with the mech WB, skrochas, kroot, recon +crisis all contesting the buildings around 1 objective and the foot WB, big blitz, foot FW and mech FW around the other.

The bikes and small blitz failed to rally.

T2 Orks went first and the mech WB assaulted the intermingled crisis+kroot with skorcha support wiping them out. The skrochas then singled and put killed a FW+fish in the mech FW. The tau responded - the other crisis singled and broke the BB with 6 kills and then the foot FW singled and shot the foot WB with ML breaking them. The small blitz then failed to activate. The barracudas wen on CAP and killed an incoming fighta who BMed the recon by the buildings. The mech FW then doubled across from the other objective and killed the skorchas (ML+crossfire). The other FB failed to activate. The damaged mech FW then singled and put another handful of BMs on the mech WB. The 1st orca came on and picked up the crisis, the 2nd killed the remnants of the broken BB.

After rallying the orks had their big WB, a zzap gunwagon and 5 fightas. The tau had all but 1 crisis formation+the kroot in play.

T3 Tau went first and orca delivered the crisis who shot the mech with ML+Crossfire killing 10+ units and breaking them. The gw failed to move, the cudas went on OW. The fightas came on and killed a recon group the 2nd were intercpeted and shotdown. The mech FW doubled forward and wiped out the broken BTS mech WB. The rest of the tau shuffled between objectives and cleared broken units out of my half to give the tau 5-0

why didn't the fightas CAP one of the Orcas in T1? Or even the 'cudas, if you were playing CAPaCAP.

One formation did - forgot to put it in as orca flew through it. Didn't play CAPaCAP as its a house rule

I'm sure this is answered elsewhere (I've searched but can't find it) but with the Kroot on Overwatch - Can they (or any units only equipped with Small Arms) actually put a BM on a target within 15cm using their Kroot Rifles?
If not, was putting the Kroot on Overwatch just a way to chew up an activation in the Patient Hunter process?

Cheers,
Steve.

No, they can't place a BM. Like Ork Stormboyz, the main incentive to Overwatch the Kroot is that Infantry on overwatch get a 5+ cover save in the open.

Open Ground: Infantry count as being in cover (-1 to hit modifier) and receive a 5+ cover save if they are on Overwatch in Open Ground. This represents the fact that stationary infantry are very hard to see. Note that the save will be lost after the infantry shoot and the Overwatch marker is removed.

From my games against Steve54 it's probably a combination of getting the cover bonus' and the patient hunter strategy of trying to get the opponent to come to the Tau. Where there ranged shooting can be more effective when they're not doubling forward to get of their shots, hence using non shooting formations earlier than FW etc.

Steve shouldn't there be another battle report ;D .

Thanks for the replies guys.
I'm well aware of the defensive bonuses of Overwatch but for the life of me, I couldn't remember the small arms/blast marker thing.

Cheers,
Steve.
