Well, no problem... Do you speak Italian? Cool!!! Our language isn't so easy to learn!!! (well, my foreign friends say so...). BTW, What's the "official" language in Malta?
As a former military professional, I sort of pride myself on knowlegde of military history.
You'd probably love to have a chat with my father... He is very experienced in military history, mainly about WW I&II, and can talk about the military navy from half-the-World for about a week...
And yes, Alter Kampfer = old fighter ! Good guess, Icon !
I must confess that I can comprehend a small bit of written german (mainly by assonance with English and Latin), so it wasn't completely a guess...
And to English-speakers ... "Old Fart" refers to a grumpy old person in a humorous light !
Ah, now I understand!!! Thanx!!!
Kisses, Icon.

BTW, What's the "official" language in Malta? | Hi Icon, well, here in Malta up to a few years ago, you had the choice of watching local TV (was quite poor, and it's actually gotten worse since other stations sprang up!), or watching the Italian stations. No choice, really. I still see Star Trek Voyager in Italian... I also worked on a remote sensing project with a group from the University of Catania - I still dont uderstand Sicilian (!), but they kindly slowed down their speed and adjusted their dialect sufficiently for me to understand. Trouble is, Italians say I speak Italian with an English accent; and the English say I have a slight Italian accent... you just can't please anyone!
Here in Malta Maltese is the language mostly used; however, most people speak English reasonably well, and I dare say over 50% at least understand Italian. And in the early 1900s, most street names and some newspapers were in Italian. Not that I was around then! Not THAT old!
I've also been to Italy 6 times - 3 short holidays, and 3 work visits. Five times out of six, however, I've not gone North of Taormina. I've gotten as far as Bologna for just 2 days, on a working visit to the CNR. The wife has been pestering me to visit Firenze, Pisa and Venezia, so I might be coming in that general direction some day.
saluti da Malta, John
PS - are they still publishing Corto Maltese comics? I only have a single one, and of all locations, it's centred on Caporetto and the WW1 campaign!

Quote (Icon-Of-Sin @ 01 Jan. 2006 (21:10)) | WWI was much more Tramatic on Europe than the US. ?And the large costly battles in Italy like the Isonzo/Caporetto Campaign are not as well known in the USA ... ? |
Seems you know well Italy's war-history... Good... | I, too, am familiar with Isonzo and Caporetto and other WWI and WWII battles in Italy. I did a term paper in college about the Isonzo campaign. In general, I'm a military history junky.
BTW, I'm older than Van and I don't consider myslef old!

Old is not a condition of age, it's a condition of body & mind.
Most of the female gamers I know are roleplayers, not wargamers.

Ah... Maltese...
Lo avrei anche potuto immaginare...
And it sounds like?
PS - are they still publishing Corto Maltese comics?
Dunno... Must ask my Big Bro (well... Big... He's only 16 minutes older than me...) when I meet him.
And my father was an US Infantry SGT during WWII in France.
Really? My grampa was medical officier on the "Roma", I bet you know "her"... His brother was in the field artillery and fought in Tobruk, where he was taken captive by the English and prisoned in India... My other grampa was in the explosive ordnance disposal unit and my father's uncle was a... uhm... not easy to explain... something like a man who goes underwater inside something like a "battlesuit" (like a Tau stealth...) and destroys water-mines... ... That's the best I can do... And he was also on the "Roma".
And "old Fart" is a bit crude
I found it!!! Maybe it could be something like "Vecchio Trombone!" in Italian (Emilia, mainly).
Most of the female gamers I know are roleplayers, not wargamers
I know a lot of female roleplayers (me too) and about 60% of them are also wargamers!!! I know it's strange but... the World is Beautiful 'cos it's Strange, isn't it?
Kisses, Icon.
