Hi,

this is to let you know I made a nice (or so I say ?:;): ) battle report of a 4000 pts battle (Iyanden vs. AMTL 2.0) in the Eldar forum.

Just a few thoughts concerning the AMTL :

- The Vulcan Mega-Bolter seems too powerful to me : my opponent had two on a Titan and could unload 12 dice on my poor Eldar every turn.

- I was facing Paladins for the first time... and I think their Shield is a bit off ! 4+ save against everything, even MW and TK, AND 4+RA to boot ? Am I the only one thinking this is too much ?

- Apart from that, and even though I lost badly (see report), I really enjoyed facing such an army : it's a change of pace and you have to think differently in order to beat it. I think I should have tried to take the Titans one by one instead of diluting my efforts across the board.

As for the Paladins Shield:
The Tau Deflector is also 4+ against TK Weapons and 5+ against MW type Weapons. And will not vanish as a normal Void Shield. So , I see no problem here as there are similar things already developed to function in the Army Lists.

Edit: On the 4+ RA after the Shield has been penetrated : A TK attack grants you no save. A MW/Lance attack looses the RA ability. So no overpowering.

Cheers!
Steele

Steele nailed the point wrt the Knight Shield exactly.

WRT the Vulcan Mega-Bolter, this has already been addressed, and will be dropping to 5 shots in the next release, so feel free to play with it like that from now on, Hojyn.

Out of interest, other than the shield, what did you think of the Knights?

Points well made. ?:;):

Quick question, though : against normal AT fire, do the Knights really get THREE (!!!) 4+ saves ? ?:80:

As for what I thought of them...

Well, my first reaction was that they were too strong: they are reasonably fast, extremely resilient, they shoot well (albeit at a relatively short range) and are deadly in assaults. This is compensated by their cost, but I wonder if they are not a bit too powerful at 250 for 3 (and considering the upgrade costs only 200 for 3 more Paladins).

I know comparison with units from other armies is not necessarily relevant, but if you compare it with the Land Raider... well. ???? ?The Paladin is waaay better in almost every aspect and costs less. Even considering LR should cost 75 points, the Paladin still seems too cheap for me.

Now, as I said, it was the first time I faced Knights, and I understand the need for AMTL to have a few "cheap" formations to compensate for their lack of activations. However, I wonder what those who have experience with Knights would say to upping their cost a bit? Something like :

- 3 Knights for 300 points
- Upgrade : + 3 Knights for 250 points.

Or perhaps keeping the Knights formation at 250 and upping the cost of the upgrade at 250 as well?

Would that make them too expensive and not worth taking?

Rules for Knight Shield are:

"This shield gives a Knight a 4+ saving throw, which may be taken against any attack. Make a single saving throw per hit with a Titan Killer weapon, rather than one for each point of damage. If the unit has the Reinforced Armour ability, then it may reroll it?s save using its standard save, unless struck by Lance, Macro-
Weapon or Titan Killer hits."

The rules specify all allowed re-rolls. I.e. - there are no re-rolls when the shield is combined with normal armour - you use either shield or armour, not both. If you have shield and RA you get at most one reroll.

You're right... I must have misread it the first time, I thought the 4+ save was taken in addition to other saves. This is a lot more reasonable.

So they are probably OK at their current cost of 250.
