This was something that I raised a long time ago on the old SG site, so I thought I might repost it here.

The Praetorians are the one thing in the list that I'm really not happy about. Praetorians are basically slightly substandard stormtroopers, if you look at their stats.

However, if you look at the background, Praetorians are mighty battle-servitors carrying heavy weaponry and armour. Take the Praetorians in Deus Ex Mechanicus, or Magos Bure's 'Stalkers' in Xenos, or the illustration and short story in the beginning of the Inquisitor rulebook, which depicts huge, powerful servitors.

So I'd really recommend an improved save (4+ or even 3+) or reinforced armour, plus heavier weapon loadout and improved FF, with appropriate points increase.

Lord Inquisitor.

I must admit, the fluff really didn't match the formation stats in my opinion either. Our group laughed about this aspect the first time we fielded them. "HUGE powerful servitors - as effective as IG..." ;)

I'm not a big fan of the points increase though. Not in a list already stretched to field a good amount of formations capable of soaking up some fire. Perhaps a slight unit reduction maybe 2 or 3 while up ticking the power to reflect the write up. or there's always the point increase, but that could do more bad than good for the list.

A comment I agree with overall, just don't know how to incorporate it into the list.

Well, I came up with several ideas before, but one possibility is making the Praetorian a light vehicle like killa canz or sentinels.

LV status could easily outweigh a power increase. And, individually, they wouldn't be that powerful. As a single praetorian, the stats aren't all that off.

I've already mess around with the stats (not the best term for it, I know), and the end result will show up in v2, when I send it to JJ and he puts it in da Vault.

Cool...

Can you tell us what those changes will be? The WIPv2 has some fluff, (which is great - exactly what Praetorians should be) but no change in stats...

Food for thought:  One of the GWUS guys built an Adeptus Mechanicus army that they show in USWD309.  His Praetorians 'count as' Obliterators, in 40k terms.

Would that be out of line for E:A?  (Sorry haven't really been paying much attention to E:A since the SG forum re-org.

In theory, I really like the idea. Forgetting rules and points, i think the concept is dead on. I do see pretorians as the beast of all beast humanoid fighting machines. Obliterators seem quite adequate actually - maybe even witch hunter flagellents in 40K might make just as much sense... ok, fluff and 40K aside...

Considering what the chaos obliterators are like in E:A right now, that may be over the top - or make the formation cost way to much.

Hmm, that's not necessarily a problem with your suggestion, but perhaps more a problem with the obliterators or their cost as they would impact the AMTL list in E:A. I think they are something like 75 a stand right now for quite a bit of h-t-h potential, fearless, and 3 shots of AP/AT/AA per unit.

Even if the pretorians were 4 obliterators to a formation, they'd be 300 points per formation in this mode... they'd definitely be 'better' than they are now though! heh.

We'd probably only get one stand to a chimera this way too, so there'd be 4 chimeras to purchase as well as the pretorian-obliterators. (using 40K grey knight termy's as a comparison - 6 of them can fit into a chimera instead of 12 IG bobs)

Interesting idea. Don't know how it would play out in a list that's already low on units and formation activations though.

Well, I made some suggestions on the old forum...

http://www.geocities.com/lordinquisitor/praetorians.htm

But thinking about it, I'd say either a 4+ or 5+ armour save and Reinforced armour, maybe MW attached to their CC5+, and FF of 4+ and some kind of heavy weapon like multilaser.

Bear in mind that the fluff suggests that they use Ogryns as the basis for some Praetorians - they've got to be tougher than Ogryns, and they have an save of 3+...

LI,

I think the fluff argument is there. The question is will it work in play with the current direction the list is going.

Dysartes already said he's given them a face lift. We'll have to see what J thinks about it I suppose.

Now if someone could just prod Jervis into approving the list revisions. :)

Well, I'm not happy with their battlefield prowess as they are either - I've come to the conclusion that 300 points spent on Praetorians is vastly better spent on yet another Warhound. I only keep taking them because I like them!

But since their stats have been changed, I'll hold that thought until I see the new big guys! :p
