Post subject:  AMTL weak against an infantry IG list

Hello!!
Ultimately I've played some games with my AMTL list agaist a friend of mine playing an infantry IG list. I've always lost because with his autocannons (Hydra, Heavy Weapon Squads)brought down my Emperor(yes, an Empreror) and my Warlord with the 1 on the critical hits.
I loose because of the amount of his firepower or this it's normal? (the Empreror dies in the 3/4th turn)

12 DC, 4+ Reinforced Armour, 8 shield = 56 average hits to kill

Autocannons have AT6+, so you need 336 shots on average to down an imperator.

Sounds like your opponent is getting very lucky.

In a turn he rolls four 6 to hit, and one of those (at least in 3 turns) destroys my Titans  :down:

Edit: or I can save a crit hit?

Then either he's getting very, very lucky or you're playing some of the DC, shield or armour save rules wrong.

I would suggest keeping your distance, an Emperor Titan should be able to out-range autocannon units, and destroy any that advance towards it.

Hmm, at a guess I'd say you're playing the Warmachine rules incorrectly. Zombo's maths work out in my head, I somehow doubt he's got enough Autocannon to pump out that many shots in 3 turns  :grin:
If you're having problems with infantry, grab a Reaver with 3 missile launchers... Not overly expensive and will make short work of most Guard formations :)

Attacks are rolled to hit normally.

Lets say your opponent manages three hits (it doesn't matter what the roll is, just as long as it hits).

Let's assume that you pass two saving throws, and fail one.

That means your War Engine then takes one point of damage.

Only then do you roll an extra dice to see if the hit that has been caused was a "critical hit"... if that extra dice rolls a '6' then the hit was critical and you'll need to roll on the damage table later...


So what I'm saying is, you only roll to see if it's a critical hit after armour saves have been taken... your opponent just rolling a '6' to-hit with his guns isn't good enough... no wonder your Titans are dying! :)

So, to re-state:

Roll to hit.
Make armour saves.
For every point of damage that is not saved, roll a dice, and if it's a "6" that means it's a critical hit.

Are you playing the shield rules right as well? You should be effectively ignoring the first 8 hits, with no chance to cause damage or criticals (though still laying a BM for being shot at).

Not you just made a mistake learning the game  :smile:

If your opponent is an experienced player however, you might want to double check all the rules with him. Just make sure he isn't trying to swindle you out of a game  :glare:

But I did't know that before I have to save and after come the crit hits.
We playedl ike this: if he rolls a 6 to hit, this is a critical hit. Misunderstood the rules...      again

Hmm, meant to say that in my last post. Looks like I mistyped the first sentence.

I suspect its more a fact of confusing those bloody rending rules from 40k. Now that was a stupid idea on GW's part  :glare:

Indeed, "Rending" being absolutely divorced from the skill of the shooter is just silly, and results in... well... things Vintersorg has managed to experience in Epic!  :grin:

Heh... Rending is what convinced me that 40k was stupid and that Epic was a much better idea :)
My beautiful scratch built Reaver, destroyed by a single turn of shooting from 2 squads of Necron Warriors  :_(
