Oh My Nodes

Having only read the list so far (hopefully I will play today in Oakville) I have come to the conclusion that I have little need or want for Synapse Nodes.  My main purpose for ever using (Lesser) Synapse Nodes was to garison as much as possible.  And, this even had it draw backs depending on your sequence of activations, failing activation rolls and putting soft synapse creatures in range of your opponent.

And now with Spawning occuring at the end of the turn any node that teleports is a sitting duck and essentially useless.  Before you could try a 3rd turn teleport into your opponents half and hope for winning an initiative roll (not very likely, but has happend) or make your opponent have to choose one situation over the other giving you an advantage.

As it stands, on paper (I say again I have not played with the new list yet -- will post post-game comments later today/tommorow) I see no need for these units . . . atleast in the style of game I play.

I used one greater node in my last game to nail down the Blitz objective.  Very handy for that.  I think that the grab/contest actions seem to be the best use for them.

They are also very handy at mid-table for spawning troops to be picked up by the swarms at the start of the next turn.

With the new spawning rules the up in reinforcements to line swarms this provides is very handy for a mere 50 to 75 pts.

I want them to stop being used to launch effective Deep Strikes as this in no way fits the background. I also want to eliminate the 'splitting' being used for a whole host non-fluff activities that they were being used for.

They are basically rally points used to provide reinforcements, and to set up hard points, for the Nid army. I beleive that they will now find employment in these duties, much to the betterment of the list.

Last, this will put the Harridan and Vituperator back on the map for launching those Deep Strikes that were being performed by the Nodes before, also a good thing.

Now if you do want to use them for a Deep Strike/Suicide Assault force it can still be done, but you are going to have to be careful how you place the Node or it will get aced right away, and it does take some planning.

In todays game I used an LSN in a Deep Strike, I placed it out off in a comfortable nook between two Woods. My opponent was in no position to attack it immediately as my other forces to his front were putting the pressure on, so it sat and spawned for two turns. In turn four they launched a suicide assault into the rear of an enemy formation clearing the way for a line swarm to march straight on to claim a Blitz and T&H, which won me the battle.

The ability is still there to do a host of things with the Nodes, you just have to think about it more.

The Greater Node Cannot be Spawned into your opponents half according to the V7 rules.

The one on my side of the board.

It allowed me to get the Defend the Flag goal because the rest of the Nid line has pressed forward to midboard, leaving the backfield open.
