Post subject:  [NEWS] Oh no They say he's got to go...

First, I want to personnaly give a heartfelt thank you to Maksim for all the fine work he has done on the Nid Army. He is not only going to be a hard act to follow, but it also isn't going to be easy to fill his shoes.

I know, for some, that my selection as his successor may not have been their first choice, my hope is those that do feal this way don't abandon the ship because of this (I am actually more open to others opinions then my posts would lead some to believe :80: ).

Everybody has their own way of approaching problems, and it is a sure bet that my approach is going to be different from Maksim's. In this case I will be falling back on the same philosophy I used designing the Squat List (Work hard on one section, get it working, then move on to the next).

This is going to result in some howling when I post the next list in about two weeks. Much of the present work that has been going on over the past couple of weeks is going to be absent from that list. Do Not Panic these ideas are not dead, lost, or forgotten, but they will be on the back burner for now because I want to flesh out the Special Rules Section first.

Some may call this a step backwards, I prefer to think of it as a return to clarity. The focus of all the Epic-A lists are the special rules, or lack of same, as it defines the character of the army. Get those right, and only then IMHO can real work of the army list, and unit data, be accomplished effectively.

I have no intention of moving the Nid list off of Epicomms, and wish to keep it in this fine open forum, but I will be enlisting the help of a select group to bounce ideas off of. (My friends here locally will make up this crew and their real job is to make sure I don't post a really bone head ideas. :wow: )

For the present I am the Nid champion until I get fired, or I am forced out by a revolt of the posters

I am looking forward to working with all of you.

Jaldon :p

I'm sure that you will be a great boss. ?I'm sure your approach is the most logical and will keep us focused on the problem rather than rushing around putting new stuff in. ?(Though reverting back to an older list will mean more prinitng for me ?:( )

One problem that ?see as a possblility of your approach (and it is a small problem given the fact that this approach worked for the Squats) is that tweaking one section at a time is that thenext sectioned tweaked will have a path already chosen for it, to keep it balanced within what has already been dealt with. ?As we pass though each section then each one will have less and less flexability in how it can be built.

Thus some really good ideas might not be able to be implimented due to it unbalancing the entire list.

However thisis more than likely unfounded panicing of a still asleep brain thingy.

Oh and how do we start a post revolution? ?:D

Congrats Jaldon, I look forward to seeing the new list!

One question I do want to ask up front though: Have you read through the new Tyranid Codex for 40k?

One question I do want to ask up front though: Have you read through the new Tyranid Codex for 40k?

Yes I own a copy, but........
(1) It doesn't change what I am planning.
(2) It is to be used only as a guideline (JJ Rule)
(3) JJ's design criterion for the Nids remains unchanged.

One thing JJ has pounded into our heads from day one is that WH40k is just a guidline, and we shouldn't attempt to directly transfer it's stats/rules/TO&E directly into Epic-A. Experience working on other lists has shown me that attempting to directly transfer what is in WH40k to Epic-A can often cause more problems then it solves. In effect you are trying to make one game system fit into an entirely different game system.

......is that tweaking one section at a time is that thenext sectioned tweaked will have a path already chosen for it, to keep it balanced within what has already been dealt with.

This would be a problem if the other sections were totally ignored, and in Squat developement they weren't.

I may not have been clear on what I meant here so here goes shot #2.  Using a very basic list for the Squats we at first concentrated on the Special Rules to make sure they reflected exactly what we wanted them to, and didn't worry all that much about the exact balance of the units or the army TO&E. For sure changes were made in both Unit Data and the TO&E during that period, but they weren't our primary concern.

Once the Special Rules were solid we moved on to the Army List TO&E, but again Unit Data and even the Special Rules were not ignored, just not a primary concern.

Just one small bit. If you are going to revert to most stats in Maksims latest. Please change the biovore and dacto to fire like in the WIP. As back then everyone agreed that they were too good (as put in 5.40b). As an example was the biovore brood of 10BP costing 450pts + synapse

As I stated in another post about the WIP, I saw very many good ideas in them, but also some that caused more problems then they solved.

I am going to include some of the ideas from the WIP across the whole list I put up, and this includes some stuff from the unit data sheets like the way Claw Attacks are defined, and the Biovore as a Support Weapon instead of an artillery weapon, both of which I really liked a lot from the WIP and fill a much needed gap. There are others.

I repeat, just because I want to concentrate on getting the special rules working right first doesn't mean that the Unit Data and the Army List are going to be ignored, they are not. But it does mean that they may not be perfectly balanced, or pointed correctly just yet.

Thanks All

Jaldon :p

Hi Jaldon,

Welcome!

Thanks for assuming the mantle of command.

This old warhorse needs a break!

You're very welcome and...

They're not my shoes anymore!

I wasn't everyone's first choice to be 'Nid champion either...

In fact, I wanted to be Necron Champion more than 'Nid Champion, but I went where Jervis wanted me to be.

Whatever you decide to do, I'll support you the best I can.

I want to make sure that the tranfer of "power" goes smoothly even if I hypothetically disagree with your decisions..

As long as you get to destination, I don't think it matters how you got there as long as you play the game fairly.

Sounds good to me.

I highly recommend keeping the list here at Epicomms, but it is your call, Jaldon.

The SG forums no longer have the confidence of many fans.

But don't forget our small friends, the Squats...

Don't ask me why this is so but....... Even though a good number of my gaming friends are 'on line' they just refuse to post either here or on the SG forum.

The Squat project here where I live, admittedly, was started by me and Thurgrim's was most definitely my baby. But Gharmulls, and Khazak's, are less my work and more the work of others (Those that refuse to post). So work and playtesting on Squats will plow slowly ahead as it always has, with Jaldon poking his head in to see whats up recently.

Also I will still manage the Squat post, and still answer all questions, so the Squats will live :D

Congratulations Jaldon, and thanks to Maksim, Chroma and everyone else who has contributed time and effort so far.

I will wait to see the next version and playtest/comment as and when I have time available.

Congrats, Jaldon. We know the bugs are in good hands. (Not that they weren't in good hands with Maksim. :p ) If the Squat list is any indication, I certainly expect good things to come for the Nids.
