been looking through a couple of forums with no luck yet.

anyone using any or know of any alternate figs for nids?

My 11 year old son and I are starting to play the old 2nd edition. I have the hivewar box set (and orks and marine armies) but he wants nids (go figure) LOL

anyway, the old figs on ebay etc.. are a little spendy for us, so wondering on hard to find stuff what alternatives there might or might not be?

thanks

The Zerg in Starcraft: The Board Game can also serve to some extent, though I doubt you get enough to make it worth the price tag (the Terran vehicles can also work for Imperials or Squats).

People also use 40k Rippers for Raveners (if a little large) and 40k Termagants and Hormagaunts will do for Hierodules (and halved with a greenstuff tail for Trygons). I did some fairly heavy conversion of 40k Warriors and Gaunts to get the Hierophant, Hydraphant, Harridan and Vituperator as the first 3 are very expensive and the 4th doesn't exist. The Dominatrix should be cheap enough to buy (<£10).

there's also a dude around here somewhere who was making some quite nice models that would work well in this respect
assuming that A) you're willing to wait for hm to finish the line B) he actually responds to your PMs and c) he hasnt just given up on it, then he's the guy you want to see. do a search for Project T i think it was called

thanks guys

got a couple of PMs I can use as well. Here is the first army he wants to build and Ill update, believe it or not yesterday was a great day on picking up a couple units. :)

Haruspex (not sure on the spelling) (found a guy selling these and the malefactors at about 10 bucks each)
Malefactor (found one set, they want about 30 bucks for 3 of them, yikes!!)
Carnifex (found one Im waiting to buy)
Zoanthrope Brood (picked up on ebay yesterday)
Dominatrix (missed the bid, went for 15 pounds)
1 Hive Tyrant (picked up 3 for 4.50 on ebay total, score!!)
2 Tyranid Warrior Broods (not much luck on these, found some but pretty high priced)

so if anyone has a specific alternate they like etc.. would love to hear it on these, otherwise Ill keep looking and waiting, like I said, pretty good day yesterday on picking up units. This will give my son a 1500 point 2nd edition army to try out, against my 1500 points of Marines or orks.

after all the help here yesterday and finding a couple items, morale is up. :)

thanks again for all the help and info.

Steve

If you want the originals then it's going to cost but I'd second the suggestion to look at DRM Skyth.
Claw Beasts look like they'd make pretty decent Warriors.
Leapers for Gargoyles.
Worker Beasts/Critters for Termagants/Hormagaunts.
Vampire Beasts for Genestealers
I'd probably use Malcore Beasts for Raveners
Then there are a couple of Skyth Beast variants to use for Carnifexes/Malefactors/Haruspex
That should do for the core of an army,

do you think the Claw Beasts are a little big for warrior broods? since in 2nd edition 3 of those go on an infantry stand? they are the same size or smaller than genestealers I think

admittedly Im pretty new to building a nid army.

thoughts?

Warriors is about all I need to find for him and we are set I think.

unless some deals fall through.

As I haven't seen them in a scale comparison pic or have any myself I don't know how well they fit in. However the old Tyranid scale is pretty poor anyway, nothing really matches up. All the plastics are to a different scale (too big but warriors do lack a bit of bulk, they're a bit 2D) than the metals (and there are big and small versions of the Tyrant and Carnifex. Big Tyrant and Carnifex are too big while the small versions are a little small compared to the plastics. Zoanthropes and Biovore are just too big). I don't think anyone who isn't making their own really cares about the scale.

I was just coming out to this post after reading the EA tyranid army list

Am I right in assuming that the old warrior brood infantry stand in SM2 is no longer a unit and the new warriors are much bigger?

Just trying to jump from SM2 to EA a bit and see if I understand.

thanks

It really depends on which list you are referring to. Some have them as INF, and others as LV. I am sure that you can use your older based miniatures for either without an issue - unless your opponent was a real stickler for the rules.
