I met Jojo, KillerLoop and Elias last week to test out the new Tyranid list (see also http://www.blog.jeanjoswig.com/weekend-gaming/ ). For more pictures visit http://gallery.jeanjoswig.com/main.php?g2_itemId=4829 .

As we had two different table sizes (one large, one sub-average) we decided to use different point values. I ended up playing on the bigger table for two times and I also had to use the initiative mod both times.

Game 1: Imperial Guard, 4500 points, Jojo

As this was my first game with the Tyranids in this list incarnation I didn't really have a plan for my brood composition and simply put stuff in to fit the points. The same was true for the setup process.

View the Tyranid army composition here: Tyranid List Game 1

My enemy in the first game used the following:
   * 1 Mechanized Infantery Platoon with Supreme Commander and lots of Ogryns
   * 2 Infantry Companies
   * 2 Artillery Companies with Basilisks
   * 1 Artillery Companies with Manticores
   * 1 Sentinel Platoon
   * 1 Warlord Titan

I set up with most of my swarms in the center because I was unsure where to focus. The GSN garrisoned on the objective to the right and held it for the whole game as the enemy never had a chance to advance on this side of the table. In general all Tyranids marched towards the enemy with the Harridan taking the right flank.

The Lictors proved to be a huge sucess and due to unlucky dice rolls survived to take out big chunks of my enemy's artillery companies. Unfortunately the Dominatrix was the first creature to die as I forgot to shield it with another war engine against Deathstrike fire.

After the destruction of the artillery companies the game was almost decided as Jojo lacked the firepower to kill the incoming swarms. The Tank Company and the Warlord secured the setup zone and advanced a little bit towards the centre but the game ended after turn two as the Imperial Guard ceded the game.

Spawning did  play only a minor role in this game. Just the occasional brood needed a respawn.

Game 2: Imperial Guard, 4500 points against Elias

With the experiences of the first game I began to fine tune the list a little bit. I added an additional war engine to the Hive group to protect the Dominatrix, got rid of the GSN because I wanted to be more mobile and instead concentrated on Dactylis and Biovore to get a forward quasi-artillery swarm.

See the Tyranid list here: Tyranids List Game 2

By the way, the Tyranids are KillerLoop's.

Elias used the following:
   * 1 Warlord Titan
   * 1 Reg HQ with plate amour (5+ infantry save for +100 points) plus one Hydra
   * 2 Mechanized infantry with plate armour (5+ infantry save for +100 points) plus one Hydra
   * 1 Tank Company with custom Leman Russ version (Lascannons and Bolters replaced by two Machine Guns - cost reduced by 150 points) plus one Hydra
   * 1 Artillery Company with Basilisks plus one Hydra
   * 1 formation of Deathstrikes
   * 1 Shadowsword SHT

Please note that he used some minor tweaks to add some character to the list.

As I said I garrisoned a Nexus group with a mix of Dactylis and Biovores to get into shooting range quickly. The shielding of the Dominatrix with a Hierodule didn't work as the Deathstrikes simply obliterated both (note to self: Next time add another Hierodule).

The Lictors fared a little worse than in the first game. Elias quickly encircled them and got them into crossfire but they still survived the assault. In summary it required the actions of three formations to kill them off because my dice rolling got really good. They later succumbed to the sustained fire of the Warlord.

Effectively the Lictors didn't kill much but forced my enemy to concentrate his first fire on them. A good deal in my mind.

From that point on it was a war of attrition. The tyranids slogged forward, IG shot and so on. Elias eventually got the BTS goal but nobody had enough objectives to win the game. At 4 am in the morning we quit and agreed on a tie as we were to tired to fuss around with VP. Plus the whiskey was luring me away ;)

Picture from turn 2:

Spawning was really heavy in this game and proved to be a vital point of the staying power of the tyranids. I failed a few initiative rolls but it felt ok.

Sweet looking battles, Morg!

Using the FW Spore Sacks sure looks impressive!  *laugh*

Two questions: 1) Why 4500 points?  Most people play in 1000 point increments, just curious as to the number as it's unusual.

2) Where are the modification the IG player was using from?  I've never seen them before.

Just a note: in the Tournament Scenario, neither type of Synapse Node can garrison.  Not sure what effect that would've had on your game.

Thanks again!

Conclusion

The Tyranid list is going in the right direction although it still feels a little bit too strong. There might have been a new list syndrome in the first game but the same can be said for the Tyranid players. My second game against Elias was fought with claws and teeth as agreed upon before the start.

Lictors were perceived as a little bit over the top but that may be because I was really lucky in using them. Still, Scout, Infiltrator and Teleport plus the special psychology is quite intimidating. Maybe we should remove one of the special rules here.

Other feedback from the participating players:
- BTS goal is perceived as too hard, as it is all over the battlefield and can be protected quite good in strict contrast to all other armies
- Meiotic Spore Sacks are too useless in their current incarnation, if they had Scout they would be much better
- Termagants are too fast, you can't garrison them which feels odd
- some players still felt that spawning was too good (e.g. bringing war engines back to life)
- my personal gripe: Dominatrixes always die in the first round  :p

It was generally agreed on by all participants that the 2+ initiative with bonuses is preferrable to 1+.

Unfortunately I can't give much feedback on the Dominatrix as it always died in the first turn. The other bio titans were reasonably ok.

Damn, I completely overlooked the GSN rule. To be honest it wouldn't have changed much as the battle mostly happened in the enemy half.

Regarding your questions:
1) We actually wanted to play 5k but we didn't have sufficient brood creatures to fill in the minimum. So we settled for 4500 points.

2) These are some house rules from Elias. IIRC he posted it on TacComm a long time ago but I am not sure on this. As it was a friendly game I agreed on using them. They didn't have too much impact as he never rolled that good on his infantry saves.

One thing I need to ask here:  did you roll for "arrival" Blast markers for your Lictors when they teleported in?  Since Tyranids are now affected by BMs, they need to test for them when they show up.

Yep, we did.

To be more detailed I only got one BM in my second game.

I concur, great looking game. Who is that in the first picture? It's always nice to be able to connect a name with a face.

They are product of my own evil genius  :devil:

I simply like IG in plate armour.

You are too kind...    As I may have said, I think your changes are an improvement!  :)
