Howdy.
I would like to post my initial thoughts on the Tyranid list with a couple of things in mind.
I have 2 games under my belt, both against a mechanized Tau list. Also, the troops I choose were not to test anything out with regard to a particular troop type or rule, but to pick what I figured to be a typical list to take to a tourny.
I am only going to comment on units I actualy used.
So here goes:
Dominatrix. I like this. What's not to like. High DC, lots of attacks especially with the new list over the previous V3. Multiple attacks, good shooting at a limited range and can tear the ears off a Warlord titan. I like the bonus to spawning as well. All in all, I would leave her exactly as she is. Hard to kill, awesome in all areas, but only good at a short range. I think that really is what makes the dominatrix the right mix of horrible monster and limted range. To me, it works. I think if she were up gunned with greater range or more shots, it would be off balance. Also goes for allthe close attacks she has. I think it is just right. If it were me, I would leave this alone.
Hive tyrant. I like him as well. I think he may be a little on the weak side. I think I might give him a 3+ save, but I want to play a few more games before I fully commit to this idea. I think he should be able to move little faster, but I suppose buying wings is the way to solve that issue. Still, I think it does a good job at what it does, although my opponent has had little trouble killing him. I was thinking some kind of a tryant guard would be nice to add, kinda of like buying him some armor. Maybe 25 oints and they don't do anything except soak up shots. In smaller games, I see him as being pretty easy to knock off. I know people say you can buy tyranid warriors to keep synapse, and that is true, but really. I think a 25 pt sandbag is not a bad thing.
Tyranid warriors. Good as they are. Limited in abilty to affect the battle too much, but keep the attack going. I like them the way they are. Points I thin is reasonable. I find myself wanting to give them greater range with the venomcannon, but since I was able to fire it more than a few times, I think that is about right. Should be able to get some of what you want, but not all of it.
I will stop here so this not too much to digest and will continue on some of the other critters in another thread so we can all discuss apples to apples.

I'll just address the "Tyrant Guard" issue for the moment. They've mainly been removed from the list because, according to Jervis, they don't yet exist at the point of time that this Hivefleet is supposed to represent.
To proxy them, I'd recommend taking Screamer-Killers to fulfil the same function... and they're spawnable! ;)

Well, I don't thin reinforced is really needed on a hive tryant. In Epic terms it does not strike me as really that tough, but should be hard to draw a bead on if you will. hence I like the 3+.
I know what you mean about carnifexs, I have been using them, but they seem awfully expensiive for a sheild... problem with them is they are really difficult to ustilize to their fullest. hence my reasoning for a Tyrant guard. They don't have to do anything except soak up bullets.
Anyhoo, I do need to play more games before i can really offer a whole lot more than my "first impression"
With regard to the dominatrix, I thought the big gun was the flamer cannon thingy. Are you suggesting adding another weapon to her?? I think that maybe overkill or at least merit a points increase. The problem I see with that is that It is already hard enough to bring a Dominatrix into a game due to high points already and then have enough for other synapse critters.
I'll play some more games and let ya know based on that

Well, in the new Tyranid Codex, the Hive Mind's power basically prevents the "instant kill" of anything in Synapse Range, so that's why the Tyrant is "tough" with Reinforced Armour. ?It used to have an Invulnerable Save, but the Tyrant was getting massacred a lot (at least in my experiences) so it was changed.

They don't have to do anything except soak up bullets. | Well, the Venomspitters are a little more shooty and one thing to remember is that, being fearless a group of Carnifex and Hive Tyrants that lose an engagement can still move towards the enemy and aren't broken, so they can initiate an engagment of their own! ?This is something I only recently realized and I'm finally getting my heavy hitters into close combat!

Honestly, in games less than 3000 points I don't bother taking a Dom. ?I'd rather spend that 500 points on a couple more Synapse and Broods. ?In low point games she basically becomes the BTS goal for the enemy and will draw a
lot of fire! ?Since the 'Nids don't take blastmarkers, failing to activate on occasion isn't so bad once you get used to it (it always seems to be my Lictors that fail!)
As to her (and the Hydraphant's) spinal gun, well, adding a bio-cannon attack to the Dom wouldn't be that big of a deal. ?And for the Hydraphant, I'd say it should lose the Warp Blast attack (no highly psychic rider on there!) and would easily accomidate a bio-cannon instead!

I think this is why Gar wants to play some more games. To date, he has not gotten his broods into HtH yet, not through any fault of his own, but by my design. I would not give him the pleasure...well, except for that nasty incident with the Genestealers.
