Yeah, great stuff, however, we need to keep these new members here and get them posting- ideas like the Epic painting competition are just the right sort of things to do this...

I plan to widely advertise the Epic Painting Comp on lots of boards, and I want to set it up so to vote you must be a member here. ?That should help with the subscriptions! ?How about you have to be a member to submit an entry???
I think the count now exceeds 100 because it is a friendly, happy little community with lots of great ideas, figure sharing and idea swapping. ?The bitchy nastiness seen elsewhere has no place here and everyone seems to appreciate that. ?
I really enjoy coming here. Thankyou for providing a fantastic medium to share my Epic hobby.

I agree that you should be a member to actually submit an entry, but I dont think that needing to be a member just to vote on the competition is a good idea. It will seem like hassle to the average viewer, but if they only have to click a button to register their vote then you'll get a lot of participation. If they have to enter details and sign up, a lot of people will think "Can't be bothered with that, I'll just look at the pretty pictures."
Once people have voted though, they are more likely to come back and see how it's going & get dragged into membership and further involvement that way.
You will certainly get a far higher number of voters if you don't require membership to do so.

I agree with Tuff on this. A member to enter, anyone can vote.
The only problem with this is that we might get a load of bogus votes, double votes, etc. In the end, the voter should be a member somewhere, so that the votes can be verified.
How about running polls here, and on the Yahoo lists?
Most people are a member of one of these places...

I would favour having no need for membership for voting, otherwise you might get the other end of the spectrum, where people sign up, vote and then never come back giving false forum stats.
Just add IP logging and cookie security and you are away, you won't get much more secure than that for a poll.

I think that all forums and boards have around 20% of members who post regularly, so it is fairly normal. I am looking forward to our 1000th member!
We seem to of the opinion that anyone can vote, but only members can enter. I think that this is the best system.

But what if you have to be a member to vote, you could give more people an incentive to join the forum and vote?
Just a thought.
Cheers

I dont know. I feel that it would actually put people off voting, and cut down the participation. And we really need as many people to vote as possible. I think that this should be open to everyone.

Hi!
I'd leave the voting to be open to all. Membership to a group or forum should be a voluntary thing, no strings attached.

Member 103 reporting in
Coming from a forum with 10,000 members, I can firmly say that membership numbers don't mean anything. Of that 10,000 only 100-200 members actualy post on anything regularly and another 500 are just lurkers...
*Goes all nustalgic for Total Annihilation, then snaps out of it*
As to polling. Free for all is the best idea. More people = more prizes in a manner of speaking.
