There seems to be sufficient interest in running a forum painting competition.  I am really excited by Primarch's suggestion (kudos to you!) and dont want to see it fall by the wayside.  The purpose of such a comp would be (as I see it)

A) Have fun and inspire some painting, modelling and converting.  This includes the sharing of tips and techniques as the comp progresses.

B) Generate a large gallery of all the entries for the enjoyment of all.

C) For a lucky few to bask in the victorious glory of the forum's admiration!

In the absence of any others, I propose the following "gentlemen's rules":

*All entries are to be new works, in order to generate new pics of models we havent seen before (which is the objective).  You will be "on your honour" for this one!

*Entries to be in one of the following catagories:
1. A battleforce, defined as a grouping of complete units (under any rules version) that must contain vehicles, infantry and (optional) one large model as center piece.
2. Single titan model
3. Single miniature
4. Custom, free for all (includes dioramas)

*You can enter as many times as you like in as many catagories as you like

* You can submit entires for others not on the forum as long as credits are paid where due

*All entires to be submitted by 30 September.  All entries will be placed on a web gallery for display.

*Voting to be done by web poll from 1 Oct-31 Oct.

*Winners Announced on 1 Nov.  Final Gallery will then be published with additional photos of the top 3 in each category.  Place winner would be strongly urged to submit an article on how their submission was created to go with the photos.
-------------
Thats just a few thoughts based on whatw as said on the other thread.  Technically there are a few issues:

*Could we have a seperate thread established for discussion, with a sticky on a copy of the rules

*Prizes?  Anyone got any contacts?

*Is there sufficient space available to host the gallery of submisisons here?

*can we use the existing poll system here to use for voting?

* should we be advertising this elsewhere as well to maximise entries and risk "fanboy" infiltration (you know of whom I speak...)?

As I said, just a few thoughts to try and solidify a fantastic idea and get a lot of fun behind our modelling.  Maybe this will even get those who aid they hate it on the "Who likes painting" thread to break out their brushes!

PLEASE add your suggestions, amendments, screams of protest etc so that this can be something we ALL enjoy!

Best wishes,
Tas

Tas,

I used to run the competitions, but I will now officialy step down and turn the baton of command over to you. Congratulations, Tas!

My comment regarding this rule is that it penalizes people like me that have been sharing their photos.

Maybe we could change it to miniatures that have been painted within the last year or not seen?

This way, people like Jimbo, myself, and many of the poeple who are the most active painters and photo takers won't be too penalized. The "last year" idea would keep our older stuff out of the competition.

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I don't even mind the idea I may have seen the model before. Maybe we could say it has to be a model painted in the last year and leave it at that.

That way those who have been nice and sharing their work can even use their stuff.

Ok then, no probs it was just my first thoughts (hey I've been sharing too you know!)

How about any submission has to have been painted this year or have not been previously seen- thus this will be the "2003 Painting Competition"??  That yeilds a six month leeway, and allows those who have never photograpghed their struff before to submit it.  Good compromise?

Any other thoughts as to rules and boundaries?  Or mods to the categories?

The only other ones I thought of was that a model(s) can only be entered in one category, and that a model you have previously been entered into painting comps are invalid (that goes for you Golden Demon placewinenrs...you know who you are, give the rest of us poor chumps a break! :) )

Anything else?

You're a welcome usurper. No worries.

It was time for me to find a new job anyhow...  :;):

P.S.
It's will probably be time to have the Epic Golden Demon again soon.

I am glad that you started this thread, thanks.

I am also glad that there is enough interest for this. I would suggest a few things:

I can create a new, sticky thread for each category in the Epic Minis boards. I like the idea that people can enter as often as they like, to reward those who can throw out well painted minis regularly.

Would it be better to have a thread for each category of entries, and then one extra thread for discussion of any entry in any category in general? This would keep all of the pictures together.

If there was a seperate gallery area, I would be happy to host it, but if someone else wishes to do this and has the capacity, then they are welcome to go ahead with it. However, we have enough space on this server, and I can get extra space as required.

Any pictures become the property of the De'Aynes gallery on submission, so that Chris can browse through them and add any that seem appropriate for his gallery.

In general, we can create as many extra threads as are required for this, and use the polls (although currently we only have polls that allow you vote for a single entry, but I am sure that we can work this out when the time comes - I have seen it worked through a number of 'rounds').

Yes, I think that we should advertise this as widely as possible. I dont see that how this could be such a bad thing.

This sounds like a good idea, and I look forward to it.

Now here's a reason for me to start painting the tiny guys again!

I'll certainly take part if I can, but I'm happy to judge if you need someone to.

Also - I haven't been able to paint epic scale stuff up to my previous standards since I was ill at teh beginning of the year. I'm slowly getting back up to speed, but havent actually completed anything in the infantry line for the last 6 months so we're on an even playing field!

Somebody did mention the idea of entering Golden Demon again. I had decided not to this year, but I've decided that if I can get up to speed on my detail painting soon enough, I will work on something for the battle scene/Open competition  :D

Suddenly I want to paint again......

if this is the case then I will not be entering...

my pictures are my copyright, and though I am happy for them to be used in agreed places (eg on a gallery), I must retain ownership at all times

all my photographs are copyrighted and all rights reserved and only I can licence who can use them, also to ensure that in any future case of copyright infringement I must be seen to protect my copyright at all times (I do take photographs of things other than Epic and miniatures)

OK. If this is going to get off the ground, we need a number of things:

An organiser - any volunteers? Tas? Maksim?

Web space - I can provide, unless someone already has some available.

My suggestions are:

Entries are emailed to the organiser, who places them online, logs the entry and date, and emails a link to the picture back to the painter.

Each category has a sticky thread. The first post of each of these consists of the rules. Every other post must include an entry into the competition, at least a picture but also details would be great. Posts without an entry are deleted.

The painter then adds a post to the appropriate thread, with details if there are any.

On closing, the organiser does not accept any more entries and closes the competition.

Now, how should this be judged? By a couple of trusted judges, or by the community in general?

Prizes - anyone got any ideas for these? I will have a look around, but I dont know what I have.

I also think that we should advertise this as much as possible, to get maximum entires from all areas of the community. With luck, this could grow like the Gothic painting competition, where the winners are displayed in Gothic mag.

A fair comment, and a bad idea on my part.

I suggest that anyone who would like, in addition, to send pictures to Chris be allowed to do so.

Although I would love to take part, not having a digi camera, or free access to a scanner, I dont see me participating.  Although I'll try.

What about the quality of pics though?  Surely this could effect decisions unfairly?  Not only picture quality, but backdrops and lighting.

Hmm, was doing a little thinking about this today, and I thought that it might be cool to have a seperate category for terrain too- I know that many of you guys build your own, and this might be a good oppotunity to show it off..

What do you all think..?  ???

I think this is a good idea. I would like to see that added as a catagory.

If you take some nice pictures of your stuff and then send clean prints I would be willing to scan them for you.

Two rules though:

1) You must mark them with your name and board name so I can get the scans back to you  :D

and

2) You can not wait until a couple of days before deadline  :p

Let me know if you want the help.
