I'm in!

I have participated in all 5 years, organising for the Inagural Comp and picking up a lucky prize in the second  when I tied 1st place in Titans/Warengines (still my only ever painting/modelling prize!).   But a war and a regional coup de etat prevented me from participating at the last minute 2 years running.

Grrr...Hopefully my luck will change this year and I'll get an entry in!

I would like to enter again, time permitting.

First I'd like to thank you CS, and all the other members who donate so much of your time to run contests like this :D

As far as the categories, I've always felt that there should be an infantry category.  If we look at previous entries, I see some great paintjobs on the figures.  However, they don't fair well in voting, as it is hard to compare a 5 man stand to eg. a super-heavy tank.  Perhaps a better way to do this would be to stipulate that the battleforce category must include a certain (25-50%) percent of infantry.  What do people think?

Rather than a master's category, how about a rule that says you can only win one prize per contest?  This happend last year when WMN declined one of the prizes he won, as he won in 2 categories (the classy talented guy he is!).

Cheers,
CF

Thanks for the replies. It seems that there is enough interest in a competition, so it will run this year (I didnt really doubt this!).

Before we look at the categories, I should keep track of the prize offers. Thanks to all who have offered.

Any comments on the categories mentioned, or offers of prize donations, would be very gratefully recieved.

EpiComp prize stash

- Captial Imperialis, missing lower front ramp and needs cleaning up (CyberShadow)
- Five multipart Marines (OldManMyke)
- both DRM and EW have made generous offers

Comments on categoried

- Single Titan/SHT
- Single unit
- Battleforce
- Terrain
- Open, included in terrain or other categories?
- Art, enough demand?
- Infantry, seperate from other categories?

Other comments

Rules as standard from last year, but also that each member can only win one prize maximum.

I'd go this way, given that there are enough prizes:

- Single Titan/SHT (But would e.g. a Baneblade be good competition for a Warlord? It could have a stupendous paintjob, but not a similar impact)
- Single unit - troops and cavalry
- Single unit - all others
- Battleforce
- Terrain
- Art, if enough demand exists (judging by the recent spate of posts, I'd say yes) - I'd restrict topics to Epic related stuff though, excluding BFG and WH40K-scale pics - that is, the grand sweeping vista of epic (waffle waffle) should be envisioned.

I'd love to see an open, for dioramas and other odds and ends, but it would need careful definition - e.g. weird stuff. Of course, this is by now starting to imply that half Taccomms people would be giving prizes to cover all categories!

I'd also love to see a prize for conversion , perhaps as done in the BFG comp. And to put my $ where my mouth is, I'll pay for a prize for this, however it's done, AS LONG as I'm not made a judge - I want to enter!

Some thoughts:

You will need to carefully define what a Battleforce is - and what the minimum size is

If you rename Single Titan to Single WarEngine, that might make it a little clearer for some

I also would love to see a conversion/diorama section. ?And to put my money where my mouth is, I'll enter it to try and win V's donated prize (it is an Aeronef right???) ?:p

I'd prefer to have SHTs seperated from titans. There's just many more options on a titan that the smaller SHTs cannot compete with. One option might be to allow SHTs to be entered as a squadron but then again that may just cause more confusion.

I'd suggest something like this:

Single unit: Infantry/Cavalry/Light vehicle/dreadnought

Single Vehicle: Tank, Super Heavy, Squiggoth, Knight, flyer (Perhaps disregarding some of the really really big ones for AI)

Single Titan: Titan of any class, Lord Of battle, very large flyer (Like the AI T-hawk, Chaos bomber, Vampire etc.). I'm unsure if Plague Towers and CIs should be under this category or the single vehicle one...

Battleforce: Any combination of 12 units or more, under any ruleset.

Terrain: Any terrain piece, home made or manufactured. This category could also include small dioramas perhaps?

Art: 40k related art. Any medium should probably be allowed, ie. photoshopped images, paintings, pencil drawings etc.etc. Question is of course how Epic related it should be. It might be a good idea to say that any piece of art should contain at least 5 units/characters/whatever in the composition. Portraits, while nice, aren't very Epic-y.

It would be good to have the WE-Titan thing defined prior to the competition.  There are some big War Engines (Manta, Abattoir, Aeonic Orb) that have higher DC than some of the Titans.

Agreed. ?These should all be of similar impact.

Single Vehicle: Tank, Super Heavy, Squiggoth, Knight, flyer (Perhaps disregarding some of the really really big ones for AI)

Sounds good. ?After all, there shouldn't be much difference between a land raider and some other SHTs.

Single Titan: Titan of any class, Lord Of battle, very large flyer (Like the AI T-hawk, Chaos bomber, Vampire etc.). I'm unsure if Plague Towers and CIs should be under this category or the single vehicle one...

I agree, the CIs and the like represent a grey issue. ?Lets ban them from the competition - just kidding :D

Terrain: Any terrain piece, home made or manufactured. This category could also include small dioramas perhaps?

Could this category be expanded into an "OPEN" category? ?Eg., terrain allowed, really large conversions etc..? ?As terrain pieces are usually large, this should work well with the "oversize" models. ?Perhaps very small terrain bits would be better suited to the small single unit category - think eldar weapons platform diaorama.

At the end of the day, so category system will allow for the respective entries to have an entirely balanced artistic impact. ?But then again, they don't have to. ?I guess the fun part is just participating in these competitions, and seeing all the great work.
Cheers,
CF

OK guys. I am coming to some conclusions on this. With the current situation, accepting gratefully the offer of five multi-part Marines (if they are still on the table), and including the Capitol Imperialis, we require:

A prize for the Open/Terrain category

A prize for the single vehicle category

If we have a conversion award, this will also need a prize

If we dont have prizes before the end of the month - the opening of the competition - then I will combine the single vehicle into the single infantry/light vehicle category, and not run the other two categories.

Thanks.
